Following potential 2015 draftees

I'm 90% in the go get Russell camp using Exum, draft picks and whatever assets we need to (Gobert, favs, and Hayward are untouchable in the deal). I don't think every team would do it, but I think the lakers and sixers might. We only need 8 main guys in the rotation and have young players at every position already. We can fill out the 8-12 positions with ingles, millsaps, and the evanses of the world. It would make sense to condense some of our assets in a better prospect like Russell or Mudiay. Think those guys go at 3 and 4 in the draft. I'd also like to get a vet pg to help ease the transition.

I think Exum will be good but like Karl Malone said his window is sooooo far away. The positive posters say let him initiate offense and improve his shooting and sit in the corner and he can just play good defense. That's fine but that's not the superstar we are looking for... That is an avery Bradley type player. It's clear Exum has no idea at this point what type of player he'd like to become... His path of discovery is going to hold back this team.

If we keep him I hope I'm wrong. I hope he comes in next year with an improved body and makes a major jump.

I am pretty sure the Jazz org thinks Exum has superstar potential. There is also not a single reason we can not keep every single one of our awesome young guys we have right now, even if every single one of them is a max level player on their next contract. We can go into as much of the luxury tax as we want to sign our own players. We also have tons of draft picks that we can use to build out the rest of a team if we have 4 max guys in 5 years. We will be fine.

It's not a salary thing to me to be able to keep our guys it's a fit/timing thing. We have Hayward, favors, Gobert as the building blocks. Burks and hood are also good young players. Exum is the development project. That is six guys that need playing time. Burke is meh... I don't think he's here long term. That is 7 guys. Everyone thinks we need to add a veteran so that is 8. Where will our pick this year get any playing time next year? What about our pick the following year?

I just think if we condense some of these assets that we won't be able to fully utilize now for a better asset... Albeit that we have to pay a premium... We would be better off. If we could get good production on a rookie deal it is a major plus. I am not sure Hayward will want to wait for Exum to develop. I just see this as a major stumbling block for us.

Exum will be good... I just don't know if that is 2 years from now or 4-5. I also don't have a clue how to project what he will be. It'd be great to see how he does in practice.

I see where you are coming from, but you don't trade a player away if you think they have superstar potential. If the Jazz really think Exum will be better than Hayward and Favors, then they wait. Trade Burks, Burke, Hood, whoever else away, just don't trade any of the special players away. Keep Favors, Hayward, Gobert and Exum if you think he has potential to join that group. Exum is already a rotation player just because of his defense. We can find time for other draft picks if they deserve time. If we sign a great veteran, then we will have an awesome 8 man rotation, and can trade away whoever else does not fit.

I haven't seen much that says superstar to me... He has some pretty good defensive plays and is solid on that end. He makes a good pass here and there, but I've seen nothing that gives me much hope for him as a scorer. The red flags as a scorer are much louder than the flickers of hope.

i laugh in the general direction of those that want to trade exum.

I only want to move him for a better prospect. Anyone here think Dante is a better prospect than Russell? Our playoff/contention window has been expedited in my opinion and I'm not sure Dante will get where we need him to be fast enough. For a team that is further away he probably has a ton of appeal.

Dennis Lindsey will certainly see what interests there are around the league for Exum & moving up. However I doubt he'll give up more than Exum and a late future first (OKC, GSW pick) to get Russell.

Not to counter for the sake of countering, but i think Dante has better upside. He looks more athletic and longer than russell. I like that Dante looks like hes always running at about 70%, he keeps control. I think we have a lot more to see from dante. I love russell to tho, but i wouldnt trade the barn for him.

The barn??

Terrible nickname.

Russell is a better offensive prospect, but I am not sure he's a better prospect overall. Exum is of the type of players you don't trade this early, simply because the ceiling is so high and his current value is so low. It's probably at its lowest point right now.

Another thing to consider - you seem to suggest that the reason for trading Exum for Russell is so we would be able to contend/fight for playoff spot next couple of years. Are you sure Russell will be better than Exum next year? Or even the year after? I am not. Rookies in general don't help you win, especially at PG spot, which is one of the hardest positions to learn in the NBA. There are very very few rookies who have contributed to the win total in their first year in the league. In fact I would be willing to go on the record saying that Exum is very likely going to have a better second year than Russell's first year.

I agree.
Though the drop off of what I would give up to get mudiay rather than russell is pretty big

No one is going to give us Russell for Exum and draft picks. If someone like LA or NYC is going to try to sell Russell they will be asking for a super-star. That is what those big markets want, super-stars to win now so they can sign other super-stars in FA. They don't want a slow rebuild.

Russell isn't particularly athletic but neither is Steph Curry. Dante is likely much faster but he doesn't use that speed well. He does seem like he has another burst or gear but he won't use it and I'm just puzzled as to why. Now is the time for him to experiment.

Dante will be a much better defender than Russell. But Russell is much better at just about everything else. Russell is long for a pg and I don't think he will hurt us on defense.

With all this said I completely trust DL and he has more information on dante than any other person in the league. He will make the best decision...

Thats a great point. If we were to jump up in the lotto and grab russell, how would a backcourt of dante and dangelo look? It would be like a dual point guard set with sg size. It would be wild!

The NBA owes us a dynasty for not calling the push off. They should have given us Wiggins, but we will take Russell.

IMO, its because he went from playing punk *** bitches in Australia to playing grown *** freaks of nature. Its obvious he has the physical tools, he plays pretty smart for a young kid .... he just lacks strength and confidence. 2 things that are pretty easily gained. By year 3 I think he's a very very very good PG.
