There's a lot of talk about what it would take to move up in the draft, but I think trading down a few spots is a real possibility as well. There are 2 possibilities for trading back - Boston (#12 for #16 and #28) and Houston (#12 for #18 and #32). Houston would need to add something else to make it worth it, maybe Capela, Montejunus, or Jones instead of #32.

Boston, however, could be done straight up without any additional pieces which make it most likely. Of course, Boston would have to like a guy at #12 and feel he won't be there at #16 in order to be motivated to make the deal. These are the players that are projected in the 10-18 range in various Mock drafts:


Turner
Booker
Oubre
Dekker
Kaminsky
Payne
Portis
Lyles
Hollis-Jefferson

The top 9 are set, in my opinion, and 10-18 are most likely going to be from this group. At least 3 of the guys from this list will be available at #16 and I think all of them could add some value to the Jazz next year. There is also some solid talent that should be available at the end of the 1st round that could be solid role players as well. These are players projected to be late 1st round picks by various mock drafts:

Wright
Hunter
Jones
Rozier
McCullough
Upshaw

It is very likely a few of these guys are available at #28. I like Wright and Rozier more than Burke and think they'd be an upgrade for backup point guard. The Jazz could then trade Burke to acquire another asset. As much as I'd like to see us move up to get Stanley Johnson, the price is too high to move up. If we trade down we could still get a guy we like at #12 AND get another first rounder. However, if one of the guys projected to be top 9 fall to #12 then the Jazz need to pick at #12 (Johnson, Hezonja, Porzingas, WCS). That is not likely, and I hope the Jazz explore trading down if none of those guys fall to us at #12.

Since taking over Dennis O'Lindsey has never stayed in place on draft day.

Anything could happen. Expect something to happen.

I just hate the idea of trading down, especially if they trade down hoping to draft a specific player only a few rounds later.

What if someone selects that player in front of you? Seems like a big gamble w/ out much reward in most cases. Only way I see a trade down possible is if Turner falls to us and teams actually start offering a lot for the #12 pick.

With how he has stacked the deck with assets, tradable contracts and cap space I will be surprised if he does nothing in the draft or/and FA.
 
We should be combining assets to acquire high end talent/production, not dispersing our good assets into even more small assets, we do NOT need more low-level assets! We have plenty of second rounders and low level first rounders. We have as many picks as 76ers. We don't have the roster spots to develop 16 draft picks in the following 4 years.

If Turner is there, just take him and call it a draft! He's a great value with high upside to be getting at 12 and I'd be ecstatic if we manage to land him without giving up assets.
 
Adding 2 first rounders to this team is a bad idea. Even one isn't that great....

Tomic, David Lee, and George Hill?

Any trade involving Burke, while getting a seasoned backup PG and a future pick, works for me.
 
Boston wants to trade up, so it is not too far fetched. I would want #16 and Boston's Wizards' 2016 and 2017 second round picks or James Young or Kelly Olynyk. I don't have much interest in #28 (but I think Jazz brass like Chris McCullough and he might be there at #28).

I think Houston will get the player they want (Tyus joins) at #18, so no need to trade up for them.
 
I love the idea of trading down and picking up a third first rounder in next years draft that is thought of as a strong draft for prospects. I've even mentioned it where this entire thread belongs.

Capella is the only asset worth moving down for IMO. I'd much rather move up or stay put.

If someone unexpected falls, they should move up to get him. But at worst, they should be able to add one of Myles Turner, Frank Kaminsky, WCS, Devin Booker or Kelly Oubre. All better options than dropping to 16/18 and hoping a 3rd tier guy falls to you. The Jazz don't need a ton more rookies. They're already one of the youngest teams in the league. I'm good with them chasing a guy they think can develop into a star. . . but I'm hoping the don't settle for role players unless they have to.

That would be 2017. Just like in 2014, I don't think teams (except the Warriors) will give away quality picks from that draft without heavily protecting them. It's just my philosophy, but this is the year to move up and be aggressive trying to find a star through the draft.

I think if Turner is there I would take him and then make calls to Boston and Milwaukee. If I can get the 16 or 17 and get one of the PFs I want or Kelly Oubre/Devin Booker (if one of them falls) and either Milwaukee's unprotected 2016 pick or the Brooklyn pick that Boston owns I'd do it. I wouldn't do it for an end of first round pick this year. If those teams love Turner (which they might) they might pony up the high price. With that additional pick, plus the other picks we have we can combine the assets and get something we want. If they don't pony up then I keep Turner. I'm not interested in the 28th or 32nd picks this year... we could likely get a pick in that range by giving up the 42nd and cash (or another future 2nd round pick) if there was someone we liked.

I'm not sold on Turner's long term fit with us, but he could fill a small role for us and I think is the best asset. If he shows physical improvement and that he can do some things in limited playing time his trade value skyrockets.
