Wanted Oubre but Im on the bandwagon now. Hope Oubre busts and Lyles becomes a star, or at least a great versatile role player.

Remember he is 19 years old, it is going to take some time. He seems to be a laid back guy and his dad seems like he coached him how to play the right way. I love his BB IQ and am not worried about his shooting. He is friends with Alec Burks so that will help with chemistry. He is a team player willing to sacrifice for the team. I give the Jazz an A.

He seems to also have a pretty high basketball IQ (similar to Ingles with the way he passes?) which tells me he probably won't be a bust. Although his ceiling may be limited by his lack of athleticism, his floor should be pretty considering where he is picked.
 
I was disappointed with the pick initially, but I trust the front office's decision. Lyles does move really well for someone his size and if he runs the pick and roll as well as Locke says he did at the workout, it should open up a lot of new things for the offense. Shooting form is really good, even though he didn't make a lot of jumpers. Didn't realize he's over 6'10" 240lbs too.

Character wise Lyles and Oubre are complete opposites. Lyles doesn't talk a lot and said it himself he'd rather let his play on the court do the talking. Oubre was claiming once again on draft night that he's the best talent in the draft and who ever drafted him he'll be bringing them the NBA Championship.


Well, even Tim Duncan had never ever made that claim...

With that size and standing reach he can play some C too. Lack of 3P shooting is the biggest concern while he apparently can knock down long 2s efficiently -this is the shot Q hates most by the way. But look at his shooting dynamics closely. Nice elevation, good touch. 74% FT. Might he have the tools to become a solid 3P shooter?

We wanted a big who can shoot but all were taken already. You play the cards you're dealt.
He was already around #10 on mocks, never below #12. This is after a season he came off the bench playing SF with his 6'10" body.
 
So ... do you guys think Favors and Gobert will benefit from playing with an elite passing big man next to them?

Honestly, I was more intrigued by it. That said, we won't need a ton from him right away and he might address issues with a backup 4 who can play some 5 as well (given his size). As long as he can shoot some from outside, we might have a winner.
 
You guys may not want to hear this, but as a player he is a pure PF. And he is closer to a 3/4 than a 4/5. He could play some 5 in a pinch against small ball, but he's more likely to guard 3's than 5's.

He's way more finesse than brute.

I like an Odom comp more so than Diaw.

I actually like that he's closer to a 3/4 than a 4/5, because Gobert is a true 5 and Favors is more of a 4/5 already. So I think Lyles fits better as he'll be a more agile 4 defensively whether he's playing alongside Gobert or Favors.


Turner and Lyles just bring different sets of skills to the table. Turner is less agile, he's more of a 4/5 - but we already have Gobert/Favors, so he's not a great fit IMO. Lyles is more mobile so there should be less match-up problems defensively plus he brings passing & playmaking ability which Turner doesn't have.

We need FC bench depth, so I'm okay with that. We don't need him to play a ton of minutes. Pretty much everthing said about this kid is he does a ton of things well (but not great) and he's got a high basketball nous. At this point, let's see what Snyder does with him. I've got a sneaky suspicion this was a Coach Q pick.
