WOW - Trading into the Top Ten picks was CRAZY dificult

I was REALLY disappointed that the Jazz didn't make some kind of move up in the 1st round. But after reading this report, it looks like picks in the top 10 were valued WAY more than I was thinking.

I don't think Winslow was that much of a game changer to warrant this kind of offer.

The Celtics made a strong final push to multiple teams in spots 4-9 on draft day. It culminated with an all-in effort in attempt to get Charlotte to deliver the No. 9 pick with Boston lusting for Duke forward Justise Winslow (the same player they coveted while trying to shuffle higher).

According to sources, the Celtics' final offer to the Hornets was a package that could have featured as many as six draft picks, including four potential first-round selections (a combination of picks from this draft and in the future). But the Hornets could not be swayed and turned down multiple offers to select Wisconsin center Frank Kaminsky.

You rejected four first round picks for Frank Kaminsky? DAMN. He better be good.

It can't be that expensive.

That was a dumb turn down my Michael Jordan.

Damn, MJ is so terrible at being a GM. Or the Hornets are. Whatever. They are just really bad at this.

I like Frank Kaminsky, but that was a terrible pick for them. They just drafted Cody Zeller. WTF are they thinking? Especially with Winslow sitting right there. I bet Winslow turns into a stud, and they look like giant fools again.

I would really hate being a Hornets fan. Jordan has to go. What a joke.

If that one is true, MJ has showed yet again why the Hornets are such a joke of an organization.

Dennis Lindsey said teams were offering the Jazz two future firsts for the 12 pick.

I guess it was hard to trade into the top 12....

4 first round picks?

I mean, what position would they have been?

Are 4 picks in the 20's really worth trading the 9th pick for?

The dumb thing was not drafting Winslow.

Michael Jordan is obsessed with college darlings.

He drafted wanted Morrison, Walker, Gilchrist, and now Kaminsky.

Probably 1st's with protection. But it just depends on where that pick was this year. If both were in the future, it's a huge risk. A #12 pick is generally better than taking a chance rotation players will be there in the 20's at some future date.

I would have traded the #12 for Boston's #16 and a future first (with only top-3 protection).

Ya, this is more of my rant against his stupidity. They should have taken Winslow.

Yeah. There's no way I'd have been cool with the Jazz making a comparable offer to move 3 spots. Draft didn't break how I hoped it would, so now I just have to hope that there's more to Trey Lyles than I've seen so far. His conditioning is a big concern for me. Work off some of that body fat and improve his explosiveness, and I'll feel a lot better about him moving forward. Other than that, it's entirely possible that the Jazz got a steal because his role at Kentucky didn't highlight everything he can or will do. I'm going to keep hoping that's the case until he proves otherwise.

Would anyone have been cool with giving Charlotte #12, Burke and two future 1st round picks for Justise Winslow? Not saying that offer would have gotten it done, but wondering how many people would have been good with giving up that many assets to move up to #9.

I've been pushing the Danny Ainge line for years. NBA draft picks are the most overpriced asset in professional sports.

They're not overpriced as far as fan $$$ goes; fans are irrational idiots who need that draft pick.

WE probably feel about the same. although my instant pessimism generally rears its ugly head. There were no real surprises in the top-11. Some guys dropped (Winslow), but no one climbed into that group (like a Payne or Dekker) and sent someone else down to us. Let's hope he turns into a quality player. We could have dropped down and still picked up a nice player and assets.

In all honesty, I think Lyles is better and has way more upside than any of the players that could have been had from 16/17 on back. The Jazz don't need more assets (although they don't hurt) they need more depth. If he can adequately fill what Kanter's role would have been - at a fraction of the cost - then it was a good pick. If he develops into even more than that, then great.

No. That's too much.

I'm happy with the results. Glad we didn't mortgage the future

In the moment you kinda wanna make a big splash, but in hindsight we are in a better position. Mostly because Trey Lyles appears to be a much better prospect than most of us thought at first.
