Jazz Buyout Tibor Pleiss, Working On Contract

Things I like about Pleiss:

- unreal shooting mechanics for a dude his size. I've seen him hit like 20 footers in-game (rare, wasn't demanded of him ever). His FT% is >80.
- he's really, really ambidextrous. Automatic hook-shots with either hand, has a simple repertoire of up-and-unders
- He was better defensively than Tomic IMO. He's quite mobile, but he might lack a bit of strength.
- Less 'soft' than Tomic-- enjoys finishing through contact. Hoping that mentality transfers over into the NBA as well. He always shot an incredibly high percentage from the field, mostly through the creation of good Barcelona guard-play.
- rebounded well in Europe given the minutes
- doesn't foul very much

We could do a lot, lot worse for a backup 5 IMO. I'm optimistic. He had a good year in his season before signing with Barcelona, and OKC was trying to pick him up. Didn't end up working out, and he had a down-year playing behind Tomic. He's still pretty young.

No details. Keep in mind Pleiss onset have much leverage, cuz any sum would be way more than he's getting in Europe. Like Tomic is making 3 mill euro a year. Pennies. What a ****ing moron.

For those of us that don't know, that's about $3.31M US. In new NBA dollars, pennies is accurate.

Yah I think generally Germans are less soft than Croatians..

When you hear Dalamon talk about any OK European player you think they are going to be a NBA All-Star.

Were they ever in with more than half a chance? I didn't think they were.

They were both on the team last year.

We didn't re-sign Evans and drafted Lyles, so the same amount of bigs were on the team from last year until this signing.

I'm super excited.

Not saying he's a better player than Tomic now, but this guy was a late first-round prospect for a reason, and he's obviously shown enough overseas that makes us willing to go pay the buyout and bring him over. Plus, he's still a young guy. He should be a nice player for us.

Wouldn't be Jazzfanz without some Dal Euro-Homerism. I'm trying to be balanced though.

He can suck at getting post-position, he finishes well but his passing is basically non-existent from what I've seen. Not sure if he'll be strong enough for the NBA game-- like Cooley would probably be able to out-rebound him. He basically had a Chandler role with his Barca team on offense, with the occasional bail-out 8 foot jump-shot.

I don't think he'll get 20mpg, but I think he'll be fine in the minutes he plays.

IINM, the team pays all taxes. So he's earning closer to $6M. Would Utah have offered much more?

Exum/Burke/Neto
Burks/Hood/Hanlan
Hayward/Ingles/Millsap
Favors/Booker/Lyles
Gobert/Pleiss/Cooley

that puts us at 15, even-steven. I think I'm very fine with that lineup-in general. Versatility if injuries come up, maybe leave Cooley on an un-guaranteed deal.

Also, IDK about "unreal" shooting mechanics. It looks like he brings the ball behind his head on his shot. Not exactly what is taught as good form.

How many 7-footers in the NBA rip >80% from the charity-stripe?

He looks like a weaker and non passing version of Thiago Splitter.

Dunno if he'll even be serviceable as a backup. The NBA is far quicker and stronger than anything he's ever faced.

I'd keep Cooley on speed dial. At least I know he can bang and rebound in this league. Pleiss might break himself just try to post up Jeremy Evans...

I cannot wait to see him learn from Gobert too. The two of them battling in practice can only make him better.
