Official UofU homer thread

How is BYU a better opponent than Miami?

Well byu and Miami played against 2 common opponents.
Miami played nebraska at home and had to go to overtime to beat them.
Byu played nebraska on the road and beat them in regulation

Miami played at Cincinnati and lost by 11 points

Byu played at home against Cincinnati and won by 14.

Miami lost 58-0 against clemson at home

Byu lost 31-0 to Michigan on the road

Miami beat bethune-cookman 45-0

Byu beat wagner 70-6

Byu finished 9-3
Miami finished 8-4

I think there is an argument to be made that byu is better than miami though I think there is probably an argument to be made that miami is better than byu too

I find this whole situation hilarious.

Because of all the U injuries, BYU should win. This means they will for sure find a way to lose.

Grats in advance U fans.

Maybe Broncos will move emery to safety for the bowl game. Hes athletic and a hard hitter.

Much as I absolutely hate it, I understand why the powers-that-be did this. And you KNOW Larry Scott influenced things.

First off, other than the injuries that are certain to result from this game due to BYU's lack of honor, there is no "cost". The PAC-12 teams all pool their bowl game money and split it equally. So even though the payout at Vegas is less, the amount we get for being in a bowl game is equal to every other team in the conference.

Second, ticket sales, schmicket sales. BYU fans aren't the only ones that got to guy tickets early. So did ticket brokers and scalpers. There will be plenty of tickets available for fans of both teams that want to go down there. The difference is, Utah fans will have to pay a premium for those tickets as they'll have to be purchased on the reseller market, which sucks. But at least we're willing to pony up the extra money.

Third, from a national perspective, Utah/BYU makes a lot of sense. That's a matchup that casual watchers of either BYU or Utah will want to make sure to catch. A lot of the importance of our team playing in a bowl game is exposure, and the opportunity to win admirers around the country via a bowl game that garners attention. Having Utah and BYU play each other is one of the easiest ways to draw attention to one of the PAC-12 bowl games. Having BYU play another PAC-12 team just wouldn't be the same, wouldn't have the same hype, wouldn't draw the same national attention.

Yes, the Vegas Bowl is the 6th bowl pick in the PAC-12.

But did you guys know that ESPN now rates the Vegas Bowl as the 9th biggest, most interesting bowl in the nation? In theory, based on the "level" of the bowl, it should be down in the 40's. But it's in the top 10. TOP 10, people.

I'm not happy about this bowl selection. I hate the BYU fan base as much as anyone, and a lot of them are in my family. This is going to be an insufferable couple of weeks. But as much as I hate it, it makes a lot of sense for those that are supposed to look at things from a macro perspective, and not my micro-perspective.

First Lefty, I also think the TV networks played a large part in this, ESPN = ABC, TDS has a contract with ESPN, this bowl game will be televised on ABC. ESPN is the biggest player in sports (especially college football) so I would be willing to bet they asked and they received with the PAC12 asking if there was anything else they would like. ESPN also did this for all the reasons you said knowing it would likely happen.

Second, did some one (I can no longer call you by name) call me a "BYU fan" the only thing worse would be to call me a Laker fan and since we know one poster who is Y, USC and a closet LA fan, I may now have to refer to you as Duck, to one up your insult towards me!

Lastly while I understand BYU fans taking it as a slight or an insult to the U's reaction I just want to state that first and foremost the cause for our disdain is the destination not the opponent. However there of course are some that don't like the opponent as well for many reasons that have been stated or don't/shouldn't really need to be, because well, the history and dislike between the two should speak for itself and rationality is all but non existent when these teams fan bases get together .

I had more to say but this post has gone on to long, as well as being called a BYU fan got my blood boiling and I'm trying not to into a blind range and go on a nut punching spree or go to Vegas only hit up the buffets and not leave any tip.

Hackett's a stud. The one thing that is always plainly obvious from watching Utah is that they really control field position. He flips the field nearly every time he punts in a bad position. It's a huge deal, yet some college coaches still act like kickers mean nothing and don't really spend time identifying or spending scholarships on good prospects. I've read a few articles about how more coaches are mining Australia for kicking talent now though because of guys like Hackett. Probably would be worth it to check out some of the soccer players in South America too. Just find the big legs, you can teach the rest.

I think it is becoming obvious how irrelevant this rivalry is anymore. The **** talk on the radio and on this site is almost non existent. The hype for the game is almost non existent. And years ago I'd be hyped for the rivalry game for weeks, now I'm not anymore hyped for this game that I was CSU last year, maybe less so because at least last year they had not been to a bowl in a while, this time they are going to the same bowl as last year, yippee . I think it's time to let this game die, it hasn't been nearly the same since they left the MWC.

In other words, the 2 year break did what it was supposed to do - ratchet things down to a manageable level.
It started before the hiatus though. I just think not being in a conference and having nothing tangible riding on the game made the game less important. It's why Utah doesn't and shouldn't care about the game. It doesn't mean anything anymore, when they were in the same conference the game was all important and the week before the game was fun, lots of talking ****, lots of shots fired, and lots of gloating about things your team did to the other. It's just not that way anymore. The teams are only really still rivals in the hearts of the fans and even that has seriously diminished.
.
Some people in the rivalry took it too far. But you'll always get that in a real rivalry. Those people are morans. I just don't believe this is a real rivalry anymore, and hasn't been since the MWC days. It just took a little while for it to settle in to the reality.
.
It's still fun to talk **** to BYU fans. Just not as fun as it once was. And it just doesn't hurt as much to lose to them because in the end it doesn't matter that much anymore.

Ya, thank god.
I'm going to try my hardest, win or lose, to remain civil and calm as possible

The biggest blow to the rivalry is that it's not the last game of the season anymore, those were intense regardless of record or conference affiliation....you're kidding yourself as a Utes fan if you're not a little pumped for this game
