SLC Trip

I agree, not a big fan of Keys on Main a lot of people love it. Piper Down on the other hand is a pretty fun place and has decent food for a bar. Plus the drinks are reasonably priced. I used to go to breaking bingo there pretty often on Thursdays for awhile. I have never been to the Red Door. Doesn't look like a place I would like.

She wants to stay at the Raddison by ESA, beds are amazing, and visit places around there. She likes the dueling piano thing and has been to Piper Downs a couple times and always enjoyed herself. Since all three of those places are close we just made a weekend of it. Plus that Mexican place is right there and then there are those two malls on each side of it. She gets what she wants and I will get what I want.

So Mrs. Stoked and I will be in SLC on Friday Feb. 19th and Saturday Feb. 20th. On the night of the 19th we are going to hit the Blue Iguana for dinner and then check out Keys On Main, The Red Door and Piper Down.

Keys On Main is a reservation for 2. But the Red Door and Piper Down are just bars and the Blue Iguana is a mexican restaurant. If anyone wants to meet us you now know where we will be. We are doing this for her birthday on the 18th.

I'm a 6'1 lanky white guy with bark brown/black hair and goatee. She is 5'11 (6'1 in heels, mmm mmm) with short dark brown hair and a black phoenix tattoo on her right shoulder.

Pretty sure you're more like 6'5/6'6.

Why not red iguana?

Skip the Red Iguana and walk 2 blocks west to El Asadero. Buy the smothered burrito and pay $12 combined instead of $30 for two cheese enchiladas and rice, get much better food, the best salsa in the valley, and skip tipping the valet. You're also going clubbing so as it is your lady might get plenty of standing around outside for an hour in high heels. Why anyone would put up with that for mediocre Mexican food is beyond me.

Thanks for the tip. We have never been to either.

Let me know how the Raddison is. Last visit we stayed at Homewood Suites Salt Lake City-Downtown and liked it quite a bit for the location: price, and the rooms were decent. It has a pretty bad *** rooftop swimming pool and lounge area that's perfect for a (several) nightcaps.

On a side note, if anyone is going to an event at the Maverik Center, check out the Staybridge Suits. Especially if you are taking your family. It's pretty easy to make a full weekend out of it.

I have stayed at the Raddison once before. We only slept there but the bed was amazing. It is also perfect for getting to Vivint arena as it is 1/2 a block away. We called them about their beds the next day and they laughed and said they get about a dozen calls a week asking what kind of bed they use becasue so many people like them. So from my limit experience I was thrilled with the Raddison.

Red Iguana has been around for more than 30 years. They didn't start as a supposedly fancy Mexican restaurant. They did offer some unique, especially for the time, dishes, like their famous moles. Word got around, they had a permanent line out the door and they developed a few dishes that are a little more upscale and intended to appeal to their new clientele. But if you go there and order chicken tacos or cheese enchiladas you are going to get pretty much the same thing you would have gotten in 1985. Which is to say, those dishes are basic. There's nothing fancy about their non-fancy menu choices. They are decent, but nothing special. People who go there and order those items often go away wondering what all the hype was about.

The hype has gotten a little out of hand, but Red Iguana is a good restaurant. Even better if you order the right stuff. Their mole is good. They've been making it since the very beginning. They have incorporated it into several of their menu items and you can buy it on the side. That said, mole is not for everyone. Some people I've talked to were confused about what they were eating. One guy called it a sort of dessert thing. Holy ****, if you eat mole thinking you're having dessert , well yeah, you're gonna be a little disappointed.

My personal recommendations are the Mole Amarillo and the Tacos Don Ramone. My wife get something I can't remember the name of, but its a stuffed park dish smothered in mole. My son likes the chicken enchiladas, but I can tell you, they are basic as basic can be. Nothing wrong with them, but yeah, any other place in that neighborhood (it's the neighborhood I grew up in) will probably have chicken enchiladas just as good or better.

Good info GF. This probably made up my mind not to go. I like mexican food but basic food. Beef enchilades, tacos, beef and been burritos... so we will be eeating somewhere else.

I live plenty lol. But with Mexican food I like the simple ****. I've had it all. Just know what I like

The Tacos Don Ramon is basic but amazing.

You going to a jazz game stoked?

I guess Mexican and then clubbing is living a little.

Well when it comes to Mexican food I lived Central America and my ex wife is an illegal immigrant from Mexico. So yeah I've been around that type of food a lot.

As for bars...well I've been to a few of those as well. I'll leave my past at that.

I've eaten at Red Iguana once. I was taken there by a guy who grew up in Mexico City for 25 years before immigrating. He recommended the mole. I hated it and haven't had mole since. That's nothing against RI or the reason I haven't returned. I think it's hard to cook bad Mexican food so it's a price point choice for me. There is very good Mexican and very chef boyardee Mexican. Many of my co-workers love a Rose Park place you may know called Chubby's. I've been there at least 100 times and their slop is nothing short of out-of-the-can trash, yet still edible and enjoyable.

Maybe my palate is refined enough now to give mole a second shot. I'll hit it up next week and let you know since you're such a huge RI guy.
