What's new

Donald Trump

A Trump victory looks inevitable to me as well. His enormous self-confidence seems to steam roll any problem, and it absolutely intimidates his competition. Jeb Bush was thought to be the clear front runner in the GOP. Trump set sites on him as the first target and annihilated him.

Trump has the amazing ability to make a huge misstatement (one so big it would kill any other candidacy), and then turn it to his advantage. He has a grasp of social media and media in general that is far beyond any of the other candidates, and that obviously matters. He turns haters to his advantage, he turns spending the least amount of money to his advantage, he turns the ads attacking him to his advantage, it goes on and on.

I fear Trump as president because he changes his position and tone whenever he feels like it. It is obvious that he will do this as president as well. The only thing that has me holding out hope is that he might actually have some core principles behind all of this (though I'm not certain), and if he does I cannot imagine a president who could be more effective at getting his agenda put into place as Trump.

Anybody who thinks Clinton or Sanders stands a chance against this guy is not paying attention to what he has accomplished so far. Nearly everyone thought his candidacy was a joke at first, but it has become crystal clear that this is no joke. He is spending the least of any republican candidate yet getting by far the biggest results. He's getting the most publicity by a huge margin. Something terrible about him would have to come out in order to stop this freight train, but even if it did there is still a very high likelihood that he would turn it to his advantage.

Sanders might be too far to the left; does not help that he calls himself a socialist. And Clinton is just way too unlikable to many Americans. Combine this with too few Americans understanding the lessons of history; understanding what Jefferson meant when he said a functioning democracy like ours requires an educated electorate(i.e., recognize a demagogue when he appears in your midst), and we may see this actually take place. If you don't know history, you are bound to repeat it. Not saying Trump is the next Hitler, but he is a demagogue taking advantage of great anxiety/fear in a time of great social/cultural change, in order to rise to power. I do not trust anyone who depends on fear, anger, and anxiety to rise to power. Understand history or be doomed to repeat it. But not enough Americans are able to see clearly what is happening here. Trump is the most fascist-like hate monger we have ever have come this close. And I fear he is unstoppable right now.....

By seemingly turning the nominating process into the format of Reality TV, it seems to allow him to say virtually anything and energize his supporters regardless of those statements. If TV's "Survivor" is no holds barred, so too is the nominating process. He can lower the dialog to the point of referring to an opponent as a *****, and his supporters are ecstatic, not revolted. I know it's a contact sport, but the whole process is dragged into the gutter. Not to mention the irresponsible manner in which he actually encourages violence in his supporters. Black man gets roughed up during a rally, and his response is maybe the guy had it coming? Are you kidding me, Trump, you don't think that encourages the nutjobs in our society?

Don't worry, he's working out the system as it currently stands just to get elected. Once elected President the Jefferson in him will come out and troll the hell out of the establishment.

Well, ya know, in an interview with NBC Nightly News anchor, Lester Holt, he did say he isn't going to talk or behave the way he is now, once he is elected. That he will somehow become more Presidential in his demeanor. Yet, just this week, he stated he wanted to punch a protestor in the face:

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news...n-protester-id-like-to-punch-him-in-the-face/

And, of course, the crowd cheered wildly. We all know by now his campaign catch phrase of "make America great again". Yet, clearly, right now he irresponsibly ratchets up the hatred the two Americas have for each other. We've had 8 years of gridlock in Washington, and lots and lots and lots of Americans are fearful and resentful of what they see as the direction of the nation. We have the culture wars, which in turn are poisoning the political wars. Surely, no good can come of causing more hatred and anger between and among Americans. This is simply not healthy for the body politic. We don't need people making every effort to divide Americans more then they are already. "Make America great again". For Trump, it really seems to be "make America hate more then ever." The party not in power is the loyal opposition. Not the blood enemy that needs to be roughed up, that needs to be punched in the face. This is not how we heal this country.

Your wishful thinking may be spot on. But, in the meantime, he is helping to build up the reserve of anger and resentment some feel. What a crossroads in our history the election of 2016 surely will be. We just cannot go on stoking fear, anger, and resentment to such a degree and somehow expect to be one nation again.

In any event you will agree that the country has been in a steady decline for the past years, the national debt has been increasing, more social wars as you say, etc... I think people are fed up with this and in my opinion their approach is "to hell with everything, we might as well go all the way and fast towards wherever we're heading to". Just trying to theorize about why such an outrageous character has become so popular.

There is always the option to secede from the Union and become the great nation that Utah was once again

My concern was very poorly worded. It's not a question of Americans not being intelligent enough to avoid electing Trump. But it does seem to be a perfect storm favoring Trump in any event. And nobody seems to play people and play the media better then he does.

...if the American public were gullible enough to elect a guy named "Obama" shortly after 9/11, electing Trump is a walk in the park compared to that!

Haha. Whatever you need to tell yourself.

You seem to be confused. I'm not saying the Republicans are acting smart. I'm not saying I agree with what they're doing/how they're acting. I'm just saying that the candidates for both sides suck.

...obviously, you misunderstood what he said! He took his "formula" and applied it all the way back to the 1912 election, not that he was alive in 1912!

It was a joke, you simple minded twit.

Fascistic post

I really thought there was no way this *** clown could get the nomination.

I'm honestly horrified.

Unlike Joe Bagadonuts, I like the U.S. to show some humility. We aren't the superior race on planet earth, we are humans just like the people trying to eek out their short existence all over the planet.

I think another bully president is long term very very bad for us. One day the U.S. will not be the top dog and when that happens we are going to be treated the way we have treated the rest of the world. I wish we would have conducted ourselves, over the last century, in a way that wouldn't encourage retribution when that day comes. As it stands, I fear for future generations and what punishment they will suffer for being descended from dumb asses like us.

I hope I'm just blowing it out of proportion. Presidents don't necessarily matter. If he's elected I hope that's true.

I thought Rubio and to a lesser extent Cruz did a good job last night showing that Trump is the emperor with no clothes. "I'll get Mexico to pay for the wall." Yes, you've said that before... but how, Donald?? You have no plan. "I'll fix health care by giving people more options." Duh. Yes, Donald, that's what ALL of the Republican candidates plan to do. But how specifically are you going to do it? You have no plan. Etc, rinse and repeat.

I still have hope that he won't get the nomination. I thought Rubio was clearly the best in the debate.

Rubio definitely rattled Trump a couple of times. Although I thought that Mexican reporter rattled Rubio a bit about his U-turn on what he said in Spanish, he was clearly very defensive when trying to explain away what he did. He's not as good as Trump in batting away those pesky questions IMO. He just looked nervous even when in attack mode.

I thought Cruz's challenge to Trump releasing his tax returns was also effective, a minus to Trump but unfortunately not really a plus to Cruz though.

Overall I don't think the debate did much to change the votes... Trump still has the momentum (unfortunately), and now with Christie throwing his support behind him, he looks like an unstoppable runaway train now right.

Wonder if that is a tell on Trump's future VP pick. I saw an interview awhile back where Trump said he doesn't want anybody like him to be the VP, referring to political experience mainly I think but also his brashness. I like Trump alone, and kind of like Christie alone. But I don't think I like that pairing.

Agreed, he did give a very coherent answer to that. I think his answer was OK as far as it went, but could have been much better worded.

Serious?

You are the first person I know that likes trump

That's what I thought when I read that.

It's funny that the front runner for the GOP nomination seems to have a bunch of secret admirers. Obviously he has a lot of support, but nobody seems to want to admit it.

The only person I know that likes Trump is a HS classmate who has worked at Subway since jr year, and is a recent Mormon convert. He's also one of the dumbest people I've ever met (he had sex with his 2nd cousin on a 4-wheeler). His intelligence has nothing to do with his choice of religion btw, just wanted to clarify that.
