The idea of left and right in politics was invented less than two hundred years ago. I think it's artificial and useless.
Government has generally been the guy with the soldiers and the hangers-on licking his boots and getting fat at the table of privilege. Access to influence equates fairly well with wealth. Having bread to throw to the masses maintains the privileged few with the soldiers... who double as "tax collectors" generally.
left and right actually refers to puppetry. The play is to entertain and misdirect the audience, the public, and to divide their sympathies or manipulate their prejudices. Left has the carrot, right has the stick. two hands, one abused class of humans, the truly misinformed, the true believers in either side of the show. Two hands, one main effect of government, one purpose. The accumuilation of power and wealth for the puppeteers/
people who get all hot or bothered about left and right are the abused/deceived and the object of the game. No control without reactions from the public, mostly directed amongst themselves. The puppeteers know it a show, and generally don't believe the ideological persuasions advanced from either side. Their eyes are on the payola being passed out to those who are helpful to the show.
