A group of students from Iowa are now apologizing after wearing red, white, and blue outfits to a high school basketball game.
For U.S.A. theme night at Valley High School, in West Des Moines, Iowa, many teenagers in the stands wore patriotic outfits. However, because some members of the opposing team, Des Moines North State, come from refugee families, the color scheme was found to be offensive.
“Everything just blows up after the game, and I’m still hearing about it this morning,” said Morgan Wheat, an assistant coach at Des Moines North, of the hubbub, according to WhoTV.com.

This is an elaborate joke right? If not this is officially going too far in terms of PC nazi-istic restraint of free speech imo. Absolutely ridiculous.

Who knows if its real or not. We need to get away from being over the top PC.

Common sense middle ground is where we'll be great "again"

Either this is misreported or its a joke. No one should be offended by simple patriotism. If there was other crap involved like white nationalism, that is different, but being offended by loving your countries colors is no different than those kids wearing their school colors.

I imagine there is more to the story.

I don't see a problem if the other team was not restrained from wearing their culture 's color wherever they feel like they belong to. Or was there a xenophobic attitude towards them? If there was then it is offensive of course.

I post, therefore I am.

I've read other articles on it and while there may be more all that is reported is that one school wore red, white and blue and that the other school had some refugee kids in their ranks so it was deemed offensive. That's it. No slurs, fights, intimidation, mocking...nothing.

Take this quote form an assistant coach of the "offended" school: "Any normal person, any educated person can look at that and think, 'What the hell are these kids thinking'?"

So to summarize:

Valley High sometimes wears red. white and blue for big games. They have done that in the past and in one particular instance they wore RWB for a football game against a prestigious private school (one that I would assume doesn't have a lot of refugee kids/families). They explained their tradition and that it was in no way meant to offend. Out of respect they hand-delivered their letter to North HS.

North HS is not asking for anyone's heads. They thought it was odd that students would wear something other than their school colors and questioned the motive for such a thing.

I can assume that now that it has been explained and seems to be pretty credible we can all move on with our lives? Basically nothing to see here.

It sounds like it's becoming a thing to use American flag to taunt minorities like hispanics. I imagine this has probably increased since the whole Trump thing.

I assumed something like that must be involved, but it legitimately seems like in this instance it was not.

I'm sure what happened is the other school was just saying "why today?"

The older I get the more I think that patriotism, as such, is corrosive. I didn't even watch the Olympics last year because the nominal prize of making everyone listen to your national anthem while your flag waves the highest makes me vaguely uncomfortable.

I like the national level competitions but the anthem parts are boring and unimportant IMO.

as usual, investigating the story past the sensational headline rendered it a non-story.

Errbody here getting con'd by some good ol fashioned fake news

Who got 'con'd"? IF anything I'd say the right approach was taken. We looked into it and got informed (as much as reasonably possibly)

I agree on it being a non story.
