Exum extension

There's a wide variety of teams who might be interested in paying Exum big $$.. Could even be the Spurs, Raptors, Knicks, Mavs, Kings, Bulls, Pacers, 76ers, Nuggets and definitely the Nets.

I said very early this season that Exum could be productive like a $10MM player for a team like the Nets this year, now the price seems much higher.

I'd say a ballpark figure is 21MM a year..

X ain't going anywhere.
Hayward ain't going anywhere.
Hill is as good as gone.

TBD if the Sixers (or their ilk in the "developing teams with oodles of cap space and young talent) are willing to commit that much cap for an old PG. If Hill lacks durability this year, could get much worse. I think he may wind up with something like a 3/60 contract, which should be palatable to the Jazz. If longer-richer, he's gone.

The Nets terrify me for every potential RFA in the market. They will overpay until they find a team that won't match. They freaking paid a ton to try and get Allen Crabbe.

I'd have conversations with Exum and Hood, but would want a slight discount on Hood for health concerns and a fairly deep discount on Exum for basketball reasons. Exum has been good, but I'd really like to see what he looks like coming into camp and in a bigger sample size. My guess is neither guy gets extended.

I'd go 4/40 for Exum and 4/80 on Hood but would want the final year to be a team option... I wouldn't let it be a deal breaker. His max starts at 24-25 per season. I could see a team overpaying for Hood in FA... the PG market is kind of saturated so Ex may not have as much interest.

They try to get the young guys again I think, but teams will need to start offloading salary again and so the empty cap space will start to have value again... don't know that they will go as hard as they did last summer at a guy on Crabbe's level.

U gotta remember what happened to Hood in the draft.. He was promised to go top12 IIRC.. Probably is looking to grab top-dollar.. Like I said he'll be months away from turning 26... A big longterm deal could be his last..

The first part has no bearing on the discussion. The second part is why he may take the security of 4/80 now versus trying for 4/100 and risk tearing an Achilles or blowing up his knee.

Yeah, they will go after guys on Exum/Hood level obviously. I bet they both get max offers from Brooklyn.

With Hood's injury history, I'd maybe see him taking a little less, but guaranteed big deal now.

For Exum, I'm in the AK/Hayward category with him.

Look at what he does this summer. Come Oct, if he's improved enough, get him extended. If you are not sure, let him play out next season. He is a RFA, let him go earn it.

I'd LOVE to pay Exum a max deal next summer. I'd love it more if he improved enough to get a 4/90 this Oct, but I'm okay paying players.

If we are matching a max deal next summer for Exum, that means he had a great season.

Our title hopes rest on Exum's shoulders. With him, Gobert and Hayward, we have a shot. Without Exum, we are in Deron land.

It could also mean that a ****ty team is desperate. The problem with RFA is that other teams are almost always willing to overpay. If the Jazz decide that they want to keep him they should try to extend him if not theN trade him. The FO needs to be brave enough to make a decision.

Exum is about getting the best out of himself, being in the best bball situation and he's aware of what the Jazz have invested in him and what their long term plans are...

Dante and Rudy changed the direction (or narrowed the focus) of this franchise when they had that post Allstar stretch 2 years ago.

Kids made of the right stiff, He ain't about them $$$.

So you think over the next 4 years Hood is going to be twice as valuable as X?
If X turns out to be only half as good as Hood - that would be most depressing.

I'm glad he at least knows their long term plans for him.
I get the vibe they go hot and cold on him pretty quickly.

Or it means he had an ok season but a team out there offers him a max deal based on potential due to his age/size/speed.

I'm confused... I like Exum and want him here, but what has he done to "earn" a lot of money? He's looked good as of late, but he hasn't proven a single thing yet.

Lots of dudes in the nba don't do anything to earn lots of money.
Mosgov. Evan turner etc.
Hell, hayward had his least efficient year of his career in the last year of his previous contact and was rewarded with a max deal.

X is young, fast, and has good size. That's probably enough to get big tone money in the insanity of nba free agency.

Hill thinks he can get 4 years and 132 million after being a mediocre pg all his career for **** sakes.

Things are worth what people will pay for them, the end. not some novel concept about what they've earned, whats proper or fair... Especially in the realm of NBA contracts..

SO basically your question is why would some other team pay him big $$$??

and thats a very simple answer.. because they've got ****ty players to replace.. they can justify paying him big because they're trying to steal him and because it's easy to look at him and say (1)this kid is gonna keep getting better, (2) It's like were buying a lottery pick (3) he looks pretty good (easily a rotation player) already

I've said it for a while now Exum is one of the quickest 6'6" and above players in the league, he projects as a 2-way player.. He meets many qualifications of players who get premium pay for a variety of reasons..
