No, we can't do the same with expirings. The key is an UNEVEN trade. Not saying it will happen. But teams like to clear cap space. An expiring gives them a contract back. An uneven trade gives them NO salary back. And yes, a team would want cap space over an expiring for a key player because they'd likely be trading him to acquire someone else.We could do the trades you are referring to with expiring and assets that we acquired in trades for those then expiring contracts. Say Jimmy butler is available would the team want cap space right then over an expiring contract and a first rounder?
With the flexibility you are waiting for something to come that may not be there. Take our space this year for instance. We didn't need it to do the Rubio deal as we could have done that after FA opened if we had wanted. Our space has dried up in prior years with almost no return... all in the name of flexibility. I say don't hamstring yourself but don't be pennywise and dollar foolish. If there are assets to be had for contracts that go beyond this year I think I'd be more than willing to go get them. We can possibly use those contracts in sign and trades if FAs want to come. I don't think it limits us that much next year tbh... especially if you think Favs is gone.
For example, Team X needs another star to pair with certain players. They want to go after a FA (or do a 3-way trade), but have zero cap space. Utah steps in, gets a couple of decent players and/or picks and allows Team X to open up cap room. This market has dried up for this off-season. But who knows next year?
Please tell me who you would sign right now? Or what bad contract do you want to take on? I'm all for Utah using space or the Diaw contract to take on salary for this year only. But not into next season.
