NBA Free Agency Moves in General (related to the Jazz, but not just moves made by the Jazz)

We could do the trades you are referring to with expiring and assets that we acquired in trades for those then expiring contracts. Say Jimmy butler is available would the team want cap space right then over an expiring contract and a first rounder?

With the flexibility you are waiting for something to come that may not be there. Take our space this year for instance. We didn't need it to do the Rubio deal as we could have done that after FA opened if we had wanted. Our space has dried up in prior years with almost no return... all in the name of flexibility. I say don't hamstring yourself but don't be pennywise and dollar foolish. If there are assets to be had for contracts that go beyond this year I think I'd be more than willing to go get them. We can possibly use those contracts in sign and trades if FAs want to come. I don't think it limits us that much next year tbh... especially if you think Favs is gone.
No, we can't do the same with expirings. The key is an UNEVEN trade. Not saying it will happen. But teams like to clear cap space. An expiring gives them a contract back. An uneven trade gives them NO salary back. And yes, a team would want cap space over an expiring for a key player because they'd likely be trading him to acquire someone else.

For example, Team X needs another star to pair with certain players. They want to go after a FA (or do a 3-way trade), but have zero cap space. Utah steps in, gets a couple of decent players and/or picks and allows Team X to open up cap room. This market has dried up for this off-season. But who knows next year?

Please tell me who you would sign right now? Or what bad contract do you want to take on? I'm all for Utah using space or the Diaw contract to take on salary for this year only. But not into next season.

I'm getting the feeling that the Jazz will sign Eric Griffin and then opt in to Diaw and Neto's non guaranteed contracts. And that will basically be all that they do this offseason. Then they'll wait to see what options are available at the trade deadline. I originally thought a move would eventually come but it's been too quiet in the past week. Not even a whisper of any signing or trade that might happen. The silence is deafening.

Can only do uneven trades once FA is opening and in the scenario you outlined earlier you said a team is rebuilding. A rebuilding team offloading a star isn't a player in FA that year. What good team is dumping a good player and needs an uneven trade to acquire said player?

The scenario you outline in your most recent post we get picks for taking on a one year salary dump... why effing wait... I'm saying if we can do that right now let's go ahead and do it. When teams dump salary they almost always do it by giving picks... not usually good players and salary. We would also likely get a 2018 pick by taking the salary now... a pick in 2018 is worth more than a future pick unless there is an uneven draft class.

If milwaukee would give a first to dump Teletovic I'd do it. I'd have done the deal Toronto did with Carroll too. If a team won't give up a first round pick now for a salary maneuver that is fine I'd move on.

We need to take a chance. What's Royce White up to these days? ****, he was MVP of some Canadian league. Do it, DL! He still has the anxiety issues but **** it, let him just play at home or on West Coast trips and have someone drive him. Or if there is enough trvael time to other games too. We could probably get as many games out of him as we got from Hill last year.

That's a novel idea. And if I'm a GM, I say why not? The 2-way players can play on the road. White is rested and ready to go for all home games. Jazz would be applauded for signing and accommodating a player with a disability.

That's a great idea!!! Derrick Favors can't play consecutive games and Joe Johnson shouldn't play heavy minutes. Dennis Lindsey said they are looking for players who are good, smart and love the game. Royce is good, smart and loves the game. He can play just half of the games to let Derick and Joe rest. Let him play just home games or let him travel to places that are easily reached. I would totally do that. His talent is worth it, especially we are in a bind this year. Great passing, very very strong, fast on his feet and with the ball and has some range. And it would be a great P.R. move by the Jazz being so accomodating and caring for his players that would highlight how much the organization will go to help.

Great news for Utah that KCP took a 1 year deal, putting him in the FA class of 2018. He will take an offer away from Hood because he will be more attainable by being an UFA.

After reading though Paul Georges comments it makes me think we should have gone after him. I think he will embrace his time in OKC and if they somehow are competitive with GS(which I doubt they will be, but who knows) he will stick around. He sounds like winning is the most important thing to him and maybe he thinks LA can get him a championship but I think if he felt another team could get him a championship he would stay.

Who knows what Hayward would have done if we traded for PG but if he did stay I think that team could have competed with GS this upcoming year.

Oh well, we will never know and I do think that was far to big of a risk for the Jazz to take but in retrospect I think the risk would have been okay.

This team could win it all...

Rubio(or maybe Hill)/Exum
Hayward/Mitchell
Paul George/Inlges
Favors/JJ
Gobert/Bradley

Well, at this point I am okay with Hayward gone. I think we learned a lot about him and what type of person he is through all of this and im okay with what we got going forward.

Im still hoping for one more trade before the season starts but I might have to settle for a couple simple FA pickups to fill out the roster and see how the team does between the start of the season and the trade deadline.

Not going after Paul George was the dumbest move, maybe ever. He wants to win above all.

George, Hayward, Gobert...thanks Jazz.

I wouldnt go that far. There is more than enough evidence that Hayward would have still left. Its hard to tell though with the amount of dishonesty he was doing to everyone around him.

Good news is we are still in a great place as a franchise. We are still set up for success short term and long term.

I'm sure that the Jazz DID go after George. The Pacers are really high on Oladipo though. That's why the Thunder were able to get George.

Something I found interesting:

Every good Jazz pick in the last several years is in some way connected to the Nuggets:
2013 Rudy Gobert - DEN pick traded to UTA
2014 Rodney Hood - GSW pick acquired in a 3 way trade between UTA, GSW and DEN
2017 Donovan Mitchell - DEN pick traded to UTA

Moral of the story? When in doubt, trade with the Nuggets.

We must stay the course in having good relations with the Denver Nuggets, they are our lucky charm so to speak. ;)

Just looking at the rosters of other teams around the NBA I don't see many 3/small ball 4 options available that we could acquire in deals that make sense for us.

Maybe Doug McDermott? The Thunder have PG13, Roberson, Alex Abrines, newly drafted Terrance Ferguson, Kyle Singler and a couple other wing types. They are also up against the tax.

SO earlier I posted a trade of Diaw for Harkless for Portland to clear space. Portland fans seem to value Harkless much more than I thought and they seem more willing to shed Aminu's salary... so here's what I came up with:

It goes through ESPN's trade machine:

http://www.espn.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=yayu6e8q

UTA gets Aminu, Ed Davis
POR gets Boris Diaw, Joel Bolomboy

POR sheds about 12.5M in salaries and saves a truckload of luxury tax
UTA gets 3/4 combo to fill in minutes left open by Hayward leaving and an expiring/depth in Ed Davis

Thoughts?
