Hunting For Meat

This is one of those things I've been mulling over lately.

I've only been hunting once before and it was much more like camping than hunting (we didn't even see anything), but lately I've been eating a bit more meat and thinking about how little I think about where my meat comes from even though I've seen a couple documentaries on the terrible side of the industry.

I think hunting for meat may give me a bit more perspective on all of this so I'd like to ask those in the know what their experience is.

What have you hunted? What weapons/techniques did you use? How did you handle the animal? What thoughts or experiences can you share with me? TIA

Siro have a new account?

For real though, I do rifle hunt. Archery seems fun, but I'm way to busy when that season opens.

Technique? Depends where you hunt. Maybe you'll be in a tree stand, maybe you're hiking 8 miles in to find something (warning: you're hiking another 8 miles out with a large animal if you do kill one), maybe you're gonna drive up, step out and shoot. Idk. Most important part is being a good shooter. You need to practice your shot, a lot, and have a good rifle. If you gut shot an animal and then have to put it down while its suffering, you'll never go again, plus it ruins the meat.

You NEED to know how to gut one out. That's required asap. I send my animals up a butcher afterwards bc I'm busy, and I like to support the local economy. Would be fun to cut one up, and cheaper (if you have all the equipment).

Basically, hunting is fun. A lot of fun. Killing animals isn't. Don't expect to enjoy that, most people don't. So be patient, practice your shot, take good, safe shots, and go with experienced hunters.

The ex does it, she enjoys it immensely, she skins and butchers the animals herself, its lovely and if you're going to be a meat eater probably the most ethical way to do it.

I don't believe meat comes from actual animals. It comes from the grocery store.

You uh... you sure she's not just practicing for you?

TBH, most of the meat you eat gets killed more ethically than an animal that gets hunted.

I'm not much of a hunter anymore (damn kids), but you MUST learn how to gut the animal before you go. And probably learn how to quarter one if you're going in a long way in/on anything other than a motorized vehicle (horseback, hiking, etc.). As far as what to do with it from there, find a good game butcher and take it to them. Talk to other hunters. Get good equipment (gun/ammo, bow/arrows). This is not an area to get cheap. Practice. The last thing you want to do is gut shot a deer, have to track it down, and shoot it while looking it in the eyes. That sucks. Plus there is a difference in the meat (a huge rush of adrenaline into the meat pre-death).

I'd likE a freezer full of elk. Despite considering it every year I haven't yet been willing to put in the effort to get it.

I used to hunt when I was a kid every year and it was great. I went elk hunting a few years back but it snowed so I mostly stayed warm and drunk in camp. Maybe this October ? (honestly probably not)

Do it! It's a blast. And elk is delicious.

If I got down on my luck I'd prolly pick up a few large dogs from the animal shelter an stock the freezer. Most humane meat tbh.
