Official UofU homer thread

Was pretty surprised to see the media vote Utah #2 in the South in their preseason poll. I figured Utah would get very little love this year considering they lost 8 guys to the NFL.
That is surprising.
Media is kind of vague though. Any kind of media in particular/link?

PAC 12 media days are today and tomorrow. The media in question are the beat writers and members of sports media scattered throughout the PAC12 cities.

And Alt, nice catch on the 7udfa's. Damn, 15 guys at least getting an NFL shot in 1 offseason. That's amazing!

I heard a little more about Carrington through somebody with a small connection. It sounds like he is a better kid than I thought and trying hard to fix some mistakes. It also sounds like he was a better locker room guy than I had heard and though.

So with that said I think he will be a good fit for Utah and hopefully turn things around for him. Although he needs someone to throw him the ball...

Also it made me laugh that I heard he chose Utah and implied the reason was in that Utah was quiet and he could avoid trouble more. You can find trouble anywhere. Its not like Eugene is a big city or crazy. SLC is more lively than Eugene. Although those are two of my favorite cities that I have lived in.

Pac-12 did a FB poll of fans and Utah was #1 in the south.

Oregon #4 in the north.

When a kid is troubled (be it in Utah's program or somewhere else), I look at the type of offenses. If a kid has a drinking/drug problem I usually like to see schools stick him and help them overcome their issues. I realize Oregon gave Carrington multiple chances and were finally forced to cut bait, which is totally understandable. I'm open to him coming to Utah hoping that a clean slate and the fact that Kyle Whittingham has a firm grip on this program will lead to him redeeming himself. That being said, Utah tried this before with Josh Gordon and it didn't work out. However, the Gordon experiment didn't seem to negatively affect the locker room or the product on the field. It was pretty much as simple as: Bring the kid in and if he can keep his nose clean, maybe we can get some high end production out of him. Hopefully Carrington will be different.

As far as other offenses go, I wouldn't be too happy seeing Utah bring in a player who was dismissed from another program due to sexual assault or domestic violence situations. To my knowledge, Carrington doesn't come with any of that baggage.

That's good to hear, Gary Andersen praised him as a game changer, I hope he is. Because I'm tired of mediocre receiver play. The Colorado game I went to where I was sitting you could tell one of the passes was a perfectly thrown pass in the end zone and Tim Patrick made a mess of it. Yeah their DB's got away with crap in that game but it's like our receiver didn't help ourselves either. That game still bugs me to because of how the Colorado fans were trash talking us at the end. I look forward to our game with them this fall.

I was a huge Tim Patrick fan. Great combo of size and speed. Not sure how his hands were/are though since i didn't watch him enough. Is he back this season or off the team?

He graduated. I liked his size but he was super inconsistent. When's the last time we had a bonafide NFL receiver?

Alex smith days?

Big time bad news coming out about Chase Hansen today. Not much is being reported yet but I kinda have a "source" telling me that Hansen has had surgery for a torn groin a few days ago and will be out at least 6 weeks.

If true, he's out for the BYU game which is a huge loss. That will be a dog fight as usual and missing your best player in the secondary doesn't bode well.....

I had heard about that. Huge loss.
At least the byu receiving core is unknown and inexperienced.

Cried a little.

I'm still worried. I think BYU has a pretty nice platoon of RB's and will probably have success running the ball. Most of the time Hansen is playing more like an extra LB than a traditional SS. He cheats up into the box very aggressively and he might be the best run supporting Safety that Utah has ever had (that's a pretty good compliment considering some of the guys Utah's had in the past).

Whittingham's entire defensive philosophy revolves around stopping the run and making a team one dimensional. IMO, that's exactly why they've been successful vs BYU during this current streak. It was already going to be tough for Utah to go down to Provo and continue that streak. Losing Hansen makes a BYU win seem like a pretty strong likelyhood IMO. It probably sounds like I'm overselling it, but for the BYU game I'd literally choose losing any other starter on the roster, including our starting QB. I guess the silver lining is that he should be ready for conference play.

This thread is back, been watching (obviously not recently enough) to see if it would come back or a new one would be made.

On the Darren Carrington topic, a small piece that I hadn't seen mentioned, from my understanding the only reason Oregon released him was the timing of this, they just got a new coaching staff and he made some statements about cleaning up the program and instilling some discipline back into the program. So good timing for the Utes that's for sure.

Also Dres Anderson was a NFL caliber WR albeit mental lapses made him inconsistent and led to more than his share of dropped balls that's for sure.

The Chase Hansen injury was a punch in the gut for me. The 2 positions with the most turnover and therefor the biggest concern was DB's and OL and both of those now had the 1 player with the most experience get hurt, Chase on defense and Lo Falemaka the starting C (only 1 game started last year and got hurt). At least both are projected to come back early in the season.

I just bet 500 on Oklahoma State O9 wins. Baylor and Texas aren't what they had been. Oklahoma lost Stoopes, Perrine, Mixon and Westbrook and play at Ok State this year. And while Ok State only has 12 returning starters, they have Rudolph, Washington and their RB (name escapes me) back, and about 3-4 other guys who will by most accounts be upgrades over their previous starters.

Utah just named Sophmore Tyler Huntley as the starting QB! I am absolutely STUNNED that Whittingham didn't pick Senior (and Team Captain) Troy Williams. I think this is the first sign in Whitt's tenure that he's actually letting his OC make the decisions. I'm very stoked about this. Huntley could grow into a real game changer.

I saw this one coming due to a local sports talk radio guy who had been to some practices saying that Huntley was the better qb in every way during practice. More accurate, read the defense better, better leader, obviously more athletic.

I figured Huntley would win the job

I heard all the same stuff but by nature, when I see the same thing year after year, I refuse to believe anything will be different until it actually is. 10 times outta 10, Whittingham will pick the senior, returning starter that started all 13 games last year and won 9 of them. This signifies a HUGE shift in coaching philosophy and proves that probably for the first time, Whittingham is butting out of the offense. Now let's see if it works.

Funny cause I was listening to 700 am radio yesterday and bill Riley asked frank dolce (ute beat guy or something maybe) if this is a sign that Whitt is relinquishing control to Taylor and he said that he actually sees it as a sign that Whitt is still not letting others have their say. He said that Whitt is famous for playing the young guys and trying to maximize the time he can use them to try to reach their upside potential.
