Trump vs Pro Athletes

The Thriller

Well-Known Member
Not shaping up to be a good weekend for Dotard. Pro athletes from the NFL and NBA have joined in speaking out against the child in chief. Steve Kerr had an exceptionally good piece.

Here's just a small part:

Regardless, it’s a shame. I’ve been fortunate enough to meet President Reagan, both Bushes, Clinton, and Obama. I didn’t agree with all of them, but it was easy to set politics aside because each possessed an inherent respect for the office, as well as the humility that comes with being a public servant in an incredible position of power, representing 300 million people. And that’s the problem now. In his tweet to Steph, Trump talked about honoring the White House but, really, isn’t it you who must honor the White House, Mr. President? And the way to do that is through compassion and dignity and being above the fray. Not causing the fray.

I really like that snippet. I've said it before, but it wouldn't matter to me if I agreed with Trump's ideology 100%, his behavior, his personality would prevent me from supporting him no matter what.

The question of if it would be worse to have Pence (someone I disagree with much more than Trump, as I see the religious-right as the absolute worst of the worst as far as their policies and what they represent) take over if we got rid of Trump, I don't care. I would take Pence over Trump any day any time no questions asked. I can absolutely handle the fact that people I disagree with hold office. But there is a bar for character and competence that Trump does not clear. He is simply not qualified to be President of the United States.

I just hope people actually wise up and start electing officials that are both respectable and politically progressive. If all the American people get out of this is electing more corporate politicians who pretend to care about the population then Trump's presidency would end up being a complete waste.

what is particularly troubling to me is that I think there are fairly sizable segments of our population who support his boorish behavior - they sort of like the idea that he's giving us all the middle finger

Sure, but remember his approval rating is only 39%. He has basically lost all the anti-establishment/anti-war votes he lied for during the election.

This.

There are people who think he's picking these divisive issues specifically because it plays well with a majority of Americans. I mean, if you disagree with what he's doing, it can seem really difficult to imagine that they're majoritarian values, but they kinda are (polls suggest that most people don't think the statue of Lee is predominately a symbol of American racism + most people strongly support standing for the flag/anthem no matter what).

This is all so embarrassing.

for now.

Trump was a total long-shot to win the 2016 election back in 2013; he's a long-shot to win 2020 right now, but do those long odds make you comfortable? On the whole, we live in a ****ty, fickle place right now.

I mean, it depends who the democrats put up to face him. If they push through a blue dog, then they very well may lose again.

what do you mean "blue dog"? I'm not hip to the parlance.

A blue dog democract are mostly democrats in red states who identify as democrats, but vote with republicans on most issues.

Basically instead of going to the left as a response to Trump's win, Democrats may look to go further right.

...This is all so embarrassing.

one other thing, not really embarrassing - more just my peculiar problem - but whenever I see the word UNITED I misread it as UNTIED.

I think my brain might be trying to tell me something, I'm just not sure what

the problem with all this is people tend to go to sport to be united!
escape from the world's problem

but now you gotta chose between the cops or the criminal lying black lives matter hands up dont shoot myth!

yes hand's up dont shoot micheal "thug" brown has been disproven.
just take a look at the court case and use all minority eye witnesses!
disregard the coroner support and white witnesses if you will, only go by the black witnes acount and still the conlcuision is michael brown was a thieving thug who attacked a cop!

yet Counterfeit News Network chose a side, instead of remaining nuetral on it!
CNN%20Newsroom-HandsUpDontShoot-Dec13-b_0.jpg

yeah i am on the side that does not lie to me daily!

so **** black lives matter(the organization, because i think all lives matter)
**** the mainstream media
and **** those players turning beloved sports into a poltical battleground

ofcourse as i say this the players are free to do whatever, and the fans are free to boycot, just like the emmies and oscars are being boycot!
and marvel universe is losing viewership because hyudra agents used donald trumps qoutes. they alienated half their viewers by suggesting donald trump is on the side of hydra while hydra is the ofspring of NAZI which are true left wing!

but remember this is nfl players are not allowed to (excessively) dance in the end zone, or wear different headphones except bose! so the owners/;league can suggest they not do it. this is a bad business decision!

Some would argue that Trump picks these fights because the actual job of governing just does not interest him:

https://www.theatlantic.com/politic...-and-the-politicization-of-everything/540915/

"It has been said that the age of Trump is the politicization of everything. The claim is impossible to dispute, especially one week after an Emmy’s ceremony that felt like an extended presidential roast. But it’s important to note that Trump is choosing to politicize sports and entertainment, not only because he is inclined toward controversy, but also because he is so demonstrably uninterested in actual policy and the political process.

Nobody is forcing the president to morph into a sports radio commentator. It is merely the role that best suits the skills that come most naturally to the former game-show host. Consider the simple, uncontroversial fact that in his ninth month in office, the U.S. president has a clearer position on Stephen Curry’s White House clearance than on any single detail of health care or tax reform. Trump is so bored by the quotidian demands of his surprisingly “complicated” job, which requires guiding policy through a complex political process, that he uses his position to instead harass Americans on the internet. Judging by the attention his sports commentary received this weekend, one can assume that Trump’s shock-jock-in-chief routine will be a long-running show".

Others point out that, because the majority of Americans do not support kneeling for the National Anthem, Trump has set a trap that both the pros and the public that opposes Trump have once again fallen for:

And, just as an aside, since one of the resident trolls continues to conflate Nazism with the Left:

Charles Blow of the New York Times pulls no punches:

https://www.nytimes.com/2017/09/25/opinion/columnists/trump-race-nfl-nba.html

"Donald Trump is operating the White House as a terror cell of racial grievance in America’s broader culture wars.

He has made his allegiances clear: He’s on the side of white supremacists, white nationalists, ethno-racists, Islamophobes and anti-Semites. He is simpatico with that cesspool.

And nothing gets his goat quite like racial minorities who stand up for themselves or stand up to him.....

....Trump has no desire to advance truth and reconciliation when it comes to race in this country. His venality and vulgarity seeks only to exploit white racial anxiety and hostility, in the most vulgar of terms, to maximum political gain.

With every passing day, Trump diminishes the office of the presidency and elevates a virulent strain of racial animus. Trumpism is becoming ever more synonymous with racism."

I didn't support it either until this past week. But we now have a president who is purposely pitting one group of Americans against another - for no other discernible reason than to gain cheap applause at political rallies to boost his ego.

While I'm sure this opinion will still maintain a plurality I'd like to see them run another poll in about a month. Hell even Michael Jordan came out for it - though I'm sure he ran it through all his endorsements deals thoroughly beforehand.

I still don't really like that they are kneeling. But I fully support their right to do so. I got called a sociopath who spits on American vets yesterday for refusing to condemn them. I laughed in his face.

America has changed, does anybody else remember what happened to Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf when he sat out the national anthem?
