Oprah Stole The Show

Oprah won the Cecil B DeMille award, first black woman to do so. Her speech stole the show by all accounts. So much so that there are now calls for Oprah to run for President in 2020.

Here’s the NYT article with a link to the speech.

https://mobile.nytimes.com/2018/01/...anscript.html?referer=https://www.google.com/

I bet Oprah would get.... oh....45% of the vote in 2020. Sorta like Mitt's math....

did you know that the show was staged..... I mean, did you notice all the women in black. It was theatre, carefully planned. The best speechwriters money could buy. Hollywood is smelling a new righteousness, a re-birth of power and influence. The elites have given us our next idol.

Oprah, btw, is a twit worse than Trump. Long on lectures, WalMart culture, funnybook intellect. But hey, idolatry is a neat ticket.

So here's the campaign slogan. "Vote for O or get outta the house. Women rule."

yep.

sure the truckers will fall in line.

Oprah v the Donald would rate its **** off, I can see the networks getting behind it. I think its the way of the future, TV celebrities running for high office, maybe over here someone country music bumpkin or an ex rugby player can run for the Libs and maybe one of the femmo, nazi, communist crowd from the ABC can run for the Labor Party. It would be riveting, none of this policy nonsense, just ratings!

So, people were very much against a billionaire running for president with zero political experience, but people praise a billionaire with zero political experience potentially running for president.

Makes sense.

Well, I guess we take our heros where we can find them, but the rise of celebrity culture in America and encouraging it to absorb our political discourse and life probably isn't the best path forward to a truly educated and thoughtfully engaged electorate. But maybe it's too late to really expect otherwise.....

"Essentially, Trump has annexed the presidency to the world of show business, the starring role of a performance career that has stretched from the WWE ring via numerous film cameos to the Oval Office. He perceives the public as an audience consuming entertainment rather than a civically engaged electorate."

Not me. Not one bit. I will never vote for any celebrity for major political office. If a celebrity wants to get into politics let them run for city council or mayor of a small town and go from there. Being a celebrity is not a qualification for political office, as we are all seeing.

You're seeing a conspiracy in something that, well, was a conspiracy, just not a secret one. The call for women to wear all black went out a few weeks ago.

Good job though, nothing gets past you...

Well, a lot gets past me. I looked at Stokes' OP and actually wondered if Oprah was really such an inspiring person she could sweep The Globes with her charm and wit and/or moral principles.

I don't think I've seen Oprah on her show more than about ten times in my life, probably less than an hour of my time. I got it that she is a cultural icon, a sort of symbol, a fav with a lot of people, and very rich.

I see this not as some folks with Satanic purposes and a hot line to Hell trying to destroy all mankind.... which is what I sorta take is your definition of a "conspiracy", but as ordinary if an eclectic batch of influence peddlers with more money than sense working on one of several possible strategies for a Dem comeback after the shock of the Trump loss. Sure, by my definition of "conspiracy", every housewife with a plan to eat out tonight instead of cook supper is a conspiracist.

I don't know what the word means to you, but to me it is ordinary reality. People want stuff, hope or believe stuff, and try to get others to help with the cause. They consider it prudent, sometimes, to sorta work on the project outta the limelight.

Bill Gates, Whoever Rockefeller, George Soros...... lots of people with extraordinary means and determined ideas of what is right or good......yah.... planners might be a better word.

I don't count on the Devil to explain anything.

We presently live in a country where most people want nothing more than their biases confirmed. In the past, this was something the right was largely guilty of; but today I think the left is just as bad.

So once you resign yourself to that notion, who better than your favorite TV personalities to feed you these biases?

It is a weird sign of our times that whenever a celebrity gives a good speech or writes a well-constructed Facebook post using a dose of common sense that the notion comes up that they would be a good president. Apparently the bar is set pretty low these days. Who cares if the person actually knows anything about government or policy, but hey, they talk good. This was obviously not the requirement used for selecting our current President, but I see the clarion call in the comments of almost any well-written or spoken discourse.

We get the government we deserve.

damn. I'm afraid you're right.

nobody thinks she's a Marxist, tho. And she'd probably think you were discussing a good tailor if you spoke the word in her presence.

We get the government we deserve.

This is damn true, I look at the corrupt, corporate stooges that run our country, steal freely from the public and are generally unable to run a bath and I think to myself well you stupid bastards vote for them, you deserve them, you deserve having them ruin the economy to line their pockets, squander the futures of your children, destroy our environment, you deserve the shame of having our government torture people in squalid camps. People make me ****ing sick, I want nothing to do with any of them.
