Underrated Actors/Actresses

Overrated for being underrated: Willem Defoe. Underrated, but is usually one of the firsts mentioned in these conversations. I think William H. Macy is pretty underrated too.

Jesus people, underrated...not overrated, ******, typecast or so "out there" you want to kill yourself because they're in yet again another movie.

Christoph Waltz

I don't agree with this just because I feel CDub gets all the credit he deserves. He is a phenomenal actor, but I wouldn't consider him underrated.

I am on the Paul Giamatti bandwagon. That guy is underrated.

If he got the credit, he would be in more movies imo. Until recently, Waltz has been a ghost in American films.

A lot to comment on here, I'll only handle the more recent posts:

Nicolas Cage.

I totally agree. At this point it is essentially conventional wisdom that Cage is a bad actor who does bad movies. He certainly has some content control issues (probably related to the IRS) but he's absolutely a better actor than his rep would indicate. Bad Lieutenant POC:NO shows he's still got it.

but Harry Dean Stanton is also underated

There's a pretty well-known Roger Ebert quote that applies here. "No movie featuring either Harry Dean Stanton or M. Emmet Walsh in a supporting role can be altogether bad."

and danny trejo

He's a cult actor, not actually a good actor. Tremendous difference.

John Goodman

Hasn't had as lucrative a career as many people think. His work on Roseanne is amazing.

no love for actresses? I think emma stone is underrated...she seems like a cool girl

Seriously?

Please. Waltz won virtually every acting award on the planet (this is barely an exaggeration btw) less than two years ago and prior to Inglorious ******** was almost exclusively a foreign television actor. He is literally scheduled to have FIVE 2011 releases (and has already had two) which is an insane workload and the product of having tremendous buzz following ********.

Plus he's supposedly slated for Tarantino's next film, Django unchained. Dude is getting plenty of respect.

My entry is along the lines of Nic Cage: a very well known actor who has a popular and critical rap for being affirmatively bad that is probably undeserved. Keanu Reeves.

In many ways I think Keanu had the wrong career. There is a lot of evidence from his early career that he's got a very legitimate comedic instinct (Bill and Ted, Parenthood, etc) and had some roles where he displayed some real range and fragility (i.e. Point Break, My Own Private Idaho, etc).

Instead he got pegged as a big budget star for Speed and later typecast as being "The Matrix guy" and got cast in a bunch of roles where he was asked to continue playing "The Matrix guy" (Constantine, A Scanner Darkly, etc). In some sense I think he's been punished almost for being too good looking. If he was a little uglier I suspect his film offerings might have been a little meatier and less popcorny.

Jeff Bridges gets a lot of love, but no where near the amount he should. Look at his filmography and you realize that he is one of the greatest actors ever and he rarely gets mentioned when people list the Great American Actors. Is he underrated? Maybe not. Is he underappreciated? Absolutely.

Thanks for making my point, Kicky. lol

Not certain you get the concept. I'm pretty sure "universally respected and highly sought after with a career that's taking off" is not the usual definition for "underrated."

I suspect his career will be viewed very kindly retrospectively. Sort of like Robert Mitchum.

Maybe not underrated because she has received several Academy Award Nominations; but I think Ellen Burstyn is the most under appreciated actress of the last 50 years.

Burstyn losing out Best Actress for Requiem for a Dream to Julia Roberts is quite possibly the biggest disgrace in Oscar history.

Exactly. Like I said, "until recently" he's been a ghost. It's a shame to me that I haven't seen Waltz in any movie until recently( I don't watch international films, dude. I'm not an elitist like you). Dude's close to the end of his rope, and we are just now getting him. I mean, honestly, how many people know his name? Underrated clap clap clap clap clap.

That chick in Meet Joe Black.

I don't recall ever seeing her in anything else, but her beauty and her EYES are exquisite. I could stare at her all day. I'm not really sure I'm doing this right, by the way.

Where the hell's my post on Colin Farrell? Maybe I put it in the movies thread. Dude is very talented. Great range. A strong resume. From Minority Report to In Bruges to Crazy Heart, dude can act. Sure, some of his movies have blown at the box office but I give him major props.

Claire Forlani. She actually does a lot of TV and not so many movies.

At the moment check her out on NCIS: Los Angeles

I just IMDB'd Farrell's filmography and saw that he's starring in a remake of "Total Recall", only not set on Mars. Seriously? I wonder if women in the future still have three breasts.
