Following Potential 2018 Draftees

I think Locke usually highlights a few guys tho. The only year I really remember the guy him loving above all else and the Jazz picking was Lyles.

I never really followed Tony for the Jazz draft. Is he usually pretty accurate with his predictions or insider knowledge? He seems to be for the Jazz as a whole, so I assume he is for the draft as well. Gotta wait for Locke to do his draft vids, that dude says way too much lol. Made videos gushing over Burks in 2011, Gobert in 2013, Lyles in 2015, said he didn't like anyone in 2016 and we ended up trading out, and loved Mitchell last year. In 2014 he gushed over Aaron Gordon, so I'm convinced we were gonna draft him if he was available.

He provides good information. His insight usually gives a general pulse on what the Jazz are thinking and what they may do.

Locke typically highlights guys who are safely at or below our range in order to manage fan expectations. Then he acts totally excited when someone whom we thought wasn't going to be available to us becomes available to us. Trey Lyles was never going to go higher than 12 in that draft. If he did, that meant that someone better fell to us. So it's a no-lose situation for Locke to gush about Lyles.

Tony Jones is more forthright, and he did actually reveal that the Jazz really liked Mitchell last year. I just can't believe Divincenzo would be the favorite at #21. There are probably 4 or 5 guys we'd take before him, imo. That has to be smoke.

Are any mocks listing Donte around 21?

I could see Donte going in the 28 - 40 range.

The guys in our range have to be: Troy Brown, Gary Trent, Dzanan Musa, Anfernee Simons, Kevin Huerter, Melvin Frazier, Khyri Thomas, maybe De'Anthony Melton... There's a chance Zhaire Smith falls close to us.

The good news is that this year's draft, unlike last year's, is lacking quality bigs outside the top half of the lottery. Combine this with the fact that the talent level is pretty even after the first 15 - 16 picks, and the Jazz may be able to trade Tony Bradley along with their pick (and maybe a non-guaranteed contract) to move up into the mid-teens somewhere. The target ought to be KBD or someone who slips a bit.

For example, Washington (15), Phoenix (16), and Milwaukee (17) could all use a young big. If they're not sold on Jontay or Mitchell Robinson in their range, they could do a swap.

Tony was the one that came closest to calling the Mitchell pick last year. I think he even had tweets saying the Jazz are trying to move up and the likely target is Mitchell.

He did a podcast for the Trib and separately for ESPN where he said the Jazz really liked Mitchell. But given how far out of range Mitchell was from our pick (24), that would be like the Jazz saying they like Mikal Bridges or Trae Young in this draft. It's like -- yeah, everyone likes those guys.

Oh yah... you are right. I remember now. It wasn't a tweet. It was on some podcast that he said it.

The idea behind Bradley, I think, is that in a league where most teams are going small at the 4 and the 5, Bradley is a guy who could be a dominant rebounder. Think Steven Adams. He has real value, and the Jazz would have to love a player to move Bradley in a deal.

Yeah i've been comparing the red rocket favorably to stauskas here for years.

Huerter's another kid Team USA endorsed yeas back even though he was ranked like 70th in the class(4stars). I remember an article that had some of the coaches saying something to the effect of that they thought the best player to run their offense thru was Huerter.

His shot is crazy accurate and hye's got nba rangeand then some. He's got great 'game sense' too.

Klay Thompson lite perhaps?

I could be wrong, but I think that the Jazz will probably hold on to Bradley. I believe I heard DL say after the 2017 draft that they viewed Bradley as a possible lottery pick in 2018 had he decided to stay in school one more year. It seems like they are high on him.

Gary Trent Jr. -- almost no one is talking about this guy.

Great video. What's not to like here?

He seems to play at a really nice pace. Sometimes in these pick up games, and summer league guys are going too hard.
He plays smooth, in control, and with purpose.

Seems to have a nice three point shot, passing ability, and can attack the basket.

Is it just me or is there something a little strange about Melvin Frazier's release of his jump shot?

Could that be a problem? Seems like he holds onto the ball a little bit longer than he should.

He shoots it on the way down and it looks like he kind of shoots with both hands. His left hand looks like it flings the ball more than other shooters.

edit: I haven't watched too much of him, but is he kind of Ronnie Brewer-esque? Like a 'modern' Brewer who can shoot 3s? I think he definitely has more offensive potential, feel, and skill than Brewer, but their play styles seem similar. Good cutters, long-*** arms, good defensive players.

This is simply not true.... Donovan Mitchell's UL teammate Ray Spaulding is a quality big IMO... If u asked Mitchell about him u'd get a rave review. He was one of my favorite players in college this szn.

I like Mo Wagner too. Widest hands in the draft, he's got serious outperform potential.

Brandon McCoy and Austin Wiley have a chance and time is on their side. Chemizie Metu.

Theres some interesting international talent which might be available, Goga bitadze dx was hyping some young 7footer i think in the italian league who looked good too.

He also prolvides some insurance for if Favors walks.

Not so sure Bradley have gone in the lotto, top 20 tho for sure. The 2019 draft he couldve been a lotto pick as a junior tho imo

Yeah and my confusion around comps to Stauskas. Huerter looks to be an entirely diff player than him.

Stauskas couldn’t defend and didn’t have an NBA body, IIRC.

U gotta consider the timing of the call... He was ranked like 70th in his HS class when I was hyping him here.. Stauskas was a lotto pick, it was a lofty comparison especially whenn im saying i think he's gonna be better.

I was not a fan of the stauskas hype back in the day either.

Full disclosure; Huerter was listed at 6'5 by all those recruiting services, he always looked 6'7 to me tho, thats part of why i think he was an easy 4-star outlier to spot.
