What's new

Jazz select Grayson Allen at 21

I usually give DL the benefit of the doubt, but this is just a terrible pick. No, I don't care about his tripping people, I'm actually OK with that, if he's on my team of course. But he's just not a good player. There is a reason he had to play 4 seasons at Duke.
He didn't have to play 4 years at duke though. He could have been a lottery pick after his sophmore year.

Good Gawd that's positive Fish's music...

I'm glad when Fish comes through with the positivity... the sun came up today... Grayson is a Jazz man so I will be rooting for him and his tremendous hand pads.
lol.

I like the pick, so this is not a criticism.

I know his combine agility numbers, but watching his highlight video I thought "he plays slow, deliberate". I want to watch a complete game not a highlight before I pass judgment. Looking forward to July 2nd to decide.

It sounds very much like a full run it back situation... said we want to retain our three internal FAs... so Neto, Favs, Exum...

Then we have the thre NG contracts... my guess is we pick two of them to bring back and have one open roster spot.
Should be a very fun year. I figure we get into the 50-60 win range and a top 4 seed. Cant wait!

love this image...look at those hands.

Yeah, low ceiling is what I see. Would have been really happy with DD for whatever reason. But anyway, if we picked up someone who actually filled a need (by need I mean we need a four who can defend, shoot, and rebound), such as Spellman or KBD, I’d feel a lot differently. Again, I think this need goes unaddressed as we plug in something that maybe partially fulfills one or two components of that criteria. I feel the same way as I did two years ago when I thought we needed a legit big man behind Rudy and Favors and we opted for Boris and Trey, and then had Bogut fall on our lap at the deadline (and over the summer, really) and we balked at it. Or when we chose Mack as the backup rather than picking up DWill off waivers. This has the same kind of feel (not the Allen selection, just that fours that fit our system don’t grow on trees and we balk any time one stares us in the face).
I wanted DD as well. When was he picked anyway?

If you think he’s a bad player, then you are either stereo typing him or never seen him play, or both. Watching his highlights alone get me excited and pop out at ya.

As far as his age goes, he could’ve gone out as a sophomore, and he would’ve most likely been a lotto pick then he played with a ton of talented one and done players, and was moved to more of a role player and was forced to play more off the ball then on and was asked to be a spot up shooter, and still managed to put up 15 points a game and always seemed to run the offense in the clutch at end of close games. He even said himself he stayed 4 years because he loved Duke and playing for coach K. It’s not like he got worse after his second year, just that he had to sacrifice for the good of the team because of the much better talent that came through.

Based on context clues it seems like we were down to Allen and Hutchison.

DL said two teams were trying to trade ahead of the Jazz to pick Allen.

Also, they had a good offer on the table even after they drafted him.

Seems like they really wanted him.

I liked him at the beginning of the year... I think I said he will be around for 10 years as a floor. I had hoped we could get him in the 30s with an extra pick and get a tremendous value. Hoped the tripping stuff had jaded people. Offensively I like him... i hope he can defend (tough to evaluate in college).

I just think his likely ceiling is a Tyler Johnson, Malcolm Brogdnon type... really good 3rd guard. I had hoped we'd shoot for a Rudy or DM.. or Jimmy Butler type steal. If he starts off well I will talk myself into him being much more.

Also seemed like Okobo was the next guy on our board... I agree with your assessment. It is fairly amazing how accurate Locke has been with his draft analysis... I'm gong to save time next year and just wait until he tells us who we are picking.

There is something about Locke that makes my blood boil. I was ready to move on and let it go and just hope Allen will improve his game, but just listen to his podcast today selling Allen. I've never seen mental gymnastics like this... so the 3 criticisms against him are -
(1) he can't defend... but oh well who could in college really? even Mitchell wasn't awesome in Louisville? ORLY? You gonna sell me this bill of goods? WTF are you looking at? Donovan was a monster defensively. Allen projects as worse denfender than Trae FRICKING YOUNG and Jerome Robinson... Process that for a little bit.

(2) elite athlete vs cones but doesn't show on tape - "I mean it's kinda true"... finishing at the rim in the 40s(FOURTIES!!!!), previous 2 year in the low 50s???? You know how we harp on Burks not being a efficient finisher even though he has flashy finishes at the rim? Well Burks in the NBA was MUCH better than Allen has been vs inferior competition in college. Also... when the floor was spread he was actually going to the rim... ORLY? Like... you mean... totally like the personnel we don't really have to play? Well OK then. I bet he will be going to the rim a ton with Rudy and Favs in there. Oh and one more... "u can see his athleticism when he chases contested balls" this is the first time I've heard this nonsense. So you are telling me Delly is an awesome athlete too? ORLY? Keep talking... lets hear more...

(3) for the reputation of an elite shooter... he's actually kind of... meh shooter. In essence in this exercise he tried limiting the sample to numbers that are not representative and saying - "I mean... he can improve on this(shooting open shots), or that"...

So to sum up - we should love the pick.. .but... 1. he cannot defend, 2. his supposed athleticism actually cannot be seen on tape, except when he goes for loose balls, and he cannot finish a the rim 3. his supposed super strength(shooting) is actually not super strong either...

Believe me, I was really getting to a place where I was OK with this pick, but this BS has engaged my gag reflex and I cannot swallow all the BS I'm being fed by the company shill.
