What's new

Jazz Free Agency Summer of 2018

Also of note — after bringing in Chandler and Bjelly, the Sixers probably have no interest in Jabari.

Poor Jabari. Sign for the QO with the Bucks?
It’s better to negotiate a one year deal over the QO so he can still possibly be traded and his new team can use his Bird Rights next year. I think I read that signing his QO would eliminate both of those things.

I think we should offer the MLE to Jabari just to see what happens. Maybe send a second rounder for them to not match.
I actually think that’s a great idea if he’s all out of options. If they match - cool. Whatever. If they don’t match - cool. Whatever. No risk either way.

I think this is a good move. We already have our roster set so if they match then we carry on as usually. If they don’t match, then awesome. We can trade Burks or waive Jonas.

The risk is that Jabari could be miserable sitting behind Favors. Ironically, its too bad Jabari isn't on the same timeline as last year. If he was hurt and could take his time to get better, get integrated to the team culture, etc, it could be a good fit. Instead he wants a 1 year deal to prove himself so he can earn a big deal in the 2019 spendfest.

Even if we could trade Burks to Sacramento for Skal, that would be a good move.

Burks is the biggest wildcard right now. Can we really not trade him? Seems like the only odd man out.

Even if there was a team that would absorb Burks into space for nothing (which there isn't), it honestly doesn't make a difference. We still would be over the cap. All it would allow us to do is keep Udoh and Jonas and still have the Non-Tax MLE.

At this point we just keep him. He had some moments last year... no reason to move him unless we have a follow up move and no one is giving up their space to absorb that salary.

I think he’s limited to just Milwaukee then. I’m pretty sure that a team can't offer a RFA from a different team an offer sheet with less than 3 years on it.

If it’s allowed, they could probably offer the full MLE (for the three years) with a no-trade clause and a trade kicker. Make it so that Milwaukee has to choke on the deal if they decide to match, while whoever signs him runs the risk of Jabari never returning to form if they don’t.

If anybody signs Jabari to an offer sheet, this is what I expect.

I think we'd have to cut one to make room for another player. I'm kind of thinking the Jazz are not going to use the MLE this year. They're sitting on oodles of cap space for 2019, so I'm thinking they're going to retool the roster next off season and keep the MLE and BAE for when they hit the cap.

And make 0 sense for Sacramento.

It is weird that they are trying to get Lavine... if Chicago let’s Zach walk I wonder if they’d have some interest in AB... not sure what they’d send back but I could see them having interest.

I would think Atlanta gets involved here at some point... young guy and his market has tanked... they need more talent... he may be screwed.

@MDAV28

I agree. I dont think anybody is absorbing Burks at all.

I think we could trade Burks to save a little money and pick up a 2nd (Burks for Bayless and a 2nd?) or trade Burks for a 2 year contract to pick up an asset (Burks for Dellie and a future pick swap) or just trade Burks for a slightly larger expiring to pick up a 2nd rounder (Burks for Faried and a 2nd).

I just feel like he is going to feel like the odd man out. Dont think that disrupts the locker room too much though.

Philly is already at 17 guys. They aren't going to take a more expensive guy to waive, they're going to waive Bayless.

Again, what's the point of all these ideas? Why would we ever trade Burks to take on money next year? For a pick swap are you serious?

You think Faried is more of a fit than Burks?

They need 1s and 3s. They have wayyy too many 2s.

If Sac wants to give us Temple for Burks, I'm in on that.

I'm brainstorming @MDAV28. Calm. Down.

I would take on money for next year for a pick because I don't think we are players in 2019 free agency. People are going to spend stupid money next year because it will be a sellers market. The cap going up and so many teams having money will lead to poor contracts. We need to let this roster play out, extend Rubio to a declining salary contract, and plan for a big summer 2020.

The MLE can be used every year. If the Jazz guarantee both Jonas and Udoh then I agree, they aren't going to be touching the exceptions. But if they waive both they can spend like $8 million before going into luxury tax, and if they keep Udoh (as they should) they can have about $4 million (or Jonas salary) to spend. The only reason I could see them not spending that is to carry 14 guys and keep an open roster spot.

I think taking away the possibility, however unlikely, of acquiring a star next summer via signing them to a max-level spot is silly. Especially if the reward is a second-round pick.

If there's a trade out there for a forward on a one-year deal at a similar number to Burks, that a team is willing to do then I am all ears. I don't see it.

No one wants Burks. We're not getting even a 2nd. Why all the concern over dumping him now ? Jazz dont need his roster spot. And they're not in the tax.

What about seeing who's available at the deadline? Then Burks' expiring is actually an asset.
