What's new

Coronavirus

trump today bragged about getting credit if they can keep the death toll under 200,000.... which would be 4x the American casualties of the entire Vietnam War, which ruined LBJ and set american foreign policy back a generation. In fact, 200,000 would be greater than the Korean War, Vietnam war, Iraqi wars, and Afghanistan War combined. We’re talking about World War numbers in one year.

And yet Trump is still in contention for re-election. Lol. The power of Fox News. Amazing
Wow I'm shocked by those numbers. I figured Vietnam casualties would be way higher.

Remember some statistic from a movie (maybe it was bull **** since it was from a movie) and the life expectancy of someone dropped into the vietnam war on the front lines. I can't remember the exact statistic but it was something crazy like 5 minutes or something.

I will never vote for a Utah Republican. The Republicans in Utah have absolutely no check on their activities. They make all the rules. The only thing they have to worry about is keeping the party hierarchy happy because if they get the nomination they get elected.

I think the way you're looking at the numbers fails to consider that NONE OF US who haven't had COVID-19 have any immunity to it at all. So you point to places that have had minor occurrences of it so far, largely due to enacting social distancing before it got out of hand and you conclude that social distancing is not and was not necessary and that we should go back to business as usual.

I think that's wrong. Once exposed all of us will get COVID-19 unless a prophylactic treatment/vaccine is available before we are exposed.

SLC is just as likely to have a massive outbreak as NYC, just depends on exposure. Because we enacted the measures we did before the outbreak got out of control we are effectively flattening the curve. Had we not enacted those measures the rates of infection would be growing at the same rate we've see it grow anywhere these measures haven't been adequately implemented.

Again, without a treatment or cure sooner or later every last one of us will get COVID-19 if exposed. This thing is going to bloom in one place only to be controlled and then come back around and bloom again in all the people who have not yet been exposed.

This is not the flu. We all have partial immunity to the flu, many of us have been vaccinated against the currently most prevalent flu virus, and it still kills a lot of people. I don't care if COVID-19 has 1/10th the mortality rate of the flu it has the potential to kill many many times more people than the flu does if we all just carelessly get sick at the same time.
That's not true. Plenty of people have been exposed to this virus and not got it. We also have other viruses that people didn't have immunity to and it didn't get a vaccine and didn't infect everyone exposed.

Besides we do have some level of immunity to it. Everyone has been exposed to some type of Corona virus's in their life..

It's gonna be really bad in Utah. Cases have almost doubled in just two days. It was 402, now 719. In just a couple days we'll be over 1,000. In a week... several thousand.

Local government has EPICALLY failed.

Please for the love of god don't vote for this f****** clown Spencer Cox in November. Please.

Wow, personal attack against the Lt. governor because he chaired a committee of experts who made recommendations to the governor and other local leaders? What did you want him to do make a Lt. Governor order prohibbiting the virus from entering the state?

I thought Utah was ahead of other states when it came to having a plan thanks in large part to Spencer Cox and the committee.

I don't know what expectations you have, but from the first press conference Utah Government has been talking about lowering the infection rate or flattening the curve. Never said they could stop it.

Governor said he will implement more measures to keep infection rate near target goals. and we see they are making adjustments. This is unprecedented, there is no playbook, mistakes will be made.

But they are conferring with experts and taking advice. Changing plans as new data becomes available, informing the public along the way.

If they'd shut down the state two weeks ago you would be on here bitching about being hungry and we'd still have to face the virus.

Sorry you're scared. I'm scared too, but I'm glad I'm in Utah instead of many other places.

This might come as a shocker to some but.... more test kits will probably mean more cases. No one had any kits a week ago but now we're getting ramped up on kits so more positive cases. I know, a shocker for some jazzfanz

Amazing that the doctor on NBC is still not advising people to wear masks.

How many would have to die for people to realize that masks are useful in helping to stop the spread of the virus.

142,000 cases and counting now...

There’s a shortage of masks now. Though it would be good, for everyone wearing a mask, that’s one less mask available for people in hospitals at much higher risk of exposure.

Eh, if there is a republican you really like then you should vote for them.
Don't assume past republicans are future Republicans
Pre conceived notions are bad

Seriously, voting SHOULD be each person vote for the best candidate. Not the one who thinks exactly like you. Not the one that benefits you specifically. Not the one who believes in the same God as you.

Vote for the best candidate. A good smart person. Our way of voting is so ****ed up right now.

I'd rather we say masks can be effective and acknowledge that there is a shortage of masks VS to say masks are not effective.

At least that way we can ramp up the manufacturing of masks or procuring them somehow than to just say we don't need them.

And now the expectation game is being played by the administration. Only having 100k people die is a win because it could have been over 2 million.

Remember that less than a month ago this thing was ‘close to airtight’ and that we’d go from 15 cases to 0 in a few days.

I don't think that's true, which is why they call it a "novel" virus. As in it is new and no one has antibodies for it. Each new flu strain its not called a "novel" flu.

Novel virus simply means a type that has not been identified. This is a type of Corona virus that's not been identified before. But corona virus's are not new. One form of it that we all get multiple times a year is the common cold.
