Conley For Horford Discussion

My bad bro... next time I'll just let you live in ignorance thinking something was correct. I sent an @ his way too.

It was overly snarky and @GVC is normally pretty solid on cap stuff. I gots no beef with him. Didn't want to see a million posts of "we can sign xyz guy with our exceptions" when it really is not feasible.

cool

Also when we don't sign anyone please don't be fooled by the DL talk of "we were aggressive but just didn't find anything that fit what we were after". It will be a cover for the fact we didn't want to overspend. In this environment I do not blame us at all.

Absolutely. Think of all the business verticals the Millers operate in... entertainment, media, theaters, car dealerships... just about every vertical (sans used car dealerships) is getting crushed right now. They must be bleeding cash. And this is after they cut 10% of its workforce.

I really wonder how bad it's getting.

Yup... although I hear car dealerships are actually doing quite well... that might be out where I live and not in Utah.

A big no for Horford. Honestly, I think we run with the same guys next season with a couple of tweaks. Get Favors back, convince Conley to come off the bench and run the second unit. Favors and Conley leading the bench would be pretty sweet.

I agree with that! Keep Clarkson, resign Favors, use our other exception for an additional stretch 4 and call it a day.

If we continue on like the last couple, your plan works fine with me. Horford was only an idea if Conley continued to be an issue. I would...

Let Mudiay go.
Trade Ed Davis for Ntilikina to give us another perimeter defender (he can take Mudiay's minutes).
Re-sign Clarkson.
Waive NWG.
Sign Favors (more dream than reality but worth a shot if he's had at Jeff Green/Ed Davis type money).

Refined, but better.

That’s exactly what the plan should be.
Well, until we grab the Greek Freak and become a dynasty.

Best course of action might be to stand pat and the answers to our roster issues might be in house in the form of Morgan, Brantley, and Oni. All should be improved and maybe ready to contribute a within the rotation. All these suggestions are great, but there’s an extremely small window to reach these objectives.

Mike Conley has been much improved and Could be valuable trade chip as a huge expiring contract or to put a contender over the top for assets. Basically we showcase Conley for half a year then use him to get better, and add the additions of Morgan, Oni, and Brantley assuming they’re ready to contribute. That’s a huge upgrade to the roster.

If Conley continues playing like this WE are contenders and probably should just hold onto him unless some offer really blows the doors off.

Indeed. But at least during the season he looked like a solid vet/backup. But now he looks lost, just like Millsap. I don't get how this could even be a trade idea.
Because it's not just about Horford for Conley. It's about using Philly's desperation and get more assets.

And this idea is only feasible if Conley stinks in the playoffs. So it's TBD anyway.

There is absolutely nothing TBD about it. It gives us a worse backup 5 (Bradley is better), a worse player (than Conley), and two more ****** years on that contract.

Be smarter than saying Bradley is better than Horford. That is such an ignorant statement. Horford fits awful next to Embiid because Embiid doesn't set good screens or defend all that well.

Conley for Horford AND ASSETS only IF Conley doesn't fit well in the playoffs.

Horford has 3 years reamining in his contract until he is 36, at almost 30M a year. He will soon become washed and thus, one of the worst contracts in the league. You can argue it's one of the worst now as he is looking terrible already. Even if Conley plays only decent bb, he comes off the books in one year and therefore, doesn't cripple our ability to resign Rudy & Donovan without going deep into luxury tax territory. And it's not like you can get great 1st rounders from Philly for acquiring that albatross: they are full of meaningless 2nd rounders. Basketball wise, it makes no sense either: he doesn't fit our system, positional need or timeline. It just doesn't make sense. These are the type of moves you make when you are rebuilding: you absorb a bad contract in order to get decent picks. We are buyers right now, plus Philly assets suck.

You can do better with the trade machine my friend :)
