Millers sell the Jazz

The Jazz are not going to Seattle. Read the article in the Tribune. Guy loves Utah and the Jazz. I am excited about the new ownership. Mr. Smith sounds like a really smart guy and a humanitarian. The type of people I can get behind. Jazz are staying in SLC, sorry to disappoint all you Seattle people. I love the city of Seattle so it isn't against the city or their fans but Utah Jazz are a big part of the community in Utah and surrounding areas. They are not going anywhere.

@infection has talked about this... He kept bakkking da cakkkks so long that he painted himself in a corner and got to a point where he was forced to pivot. He could have swapped out other pieces along the way when we had clear needs and could find some balance but around 50 wins and playoff births gets him a new contract so why risk the biscuit until you have to. He had to see it and get copious amounts of data before making his moves... but then he becomes overly reactionary and overpays to get it done. He becomes too anchored to his deals and his players imo (see Exum, Dante and to a lesser extent Bradley, Tony). The fact he couldn't let Quin move Conley to the bench this season when that is clearly what Quin decided to do further cements the idea to me that he likes to stick with things until he's proved wrong or right.

Call it patience or stubborness or being risk averse or whatever you like. The rotating band aids at point guard has been a problem... the fact he overpaid for Mike makes it worse.
DL buys stock in a company. He doesn't want to get too emotional about the ups and downs. He's read all the finances wisdom regarding patience. His stock continues to drop. He doesn't want to be the foolish guy who sells the stock at a low and then sees it explode. He wants to be extra sure that he knows for certain the stock is a failure before letting go. Unfortunately, the amount of certainty he requires before making that move is seeing the company go under, when he no longer has stock to sell.

A couple things:
-HOLY ****
-I sure hope this is good from a basketball perspective. I’m cautiously optimistic, though I really appreciated Gail’s stewardship, for all of my occasional cheap shots.
-I will be the first to say that I would not be wildly upset if they moved the team to Seattle. But only Seattle. I dig the hell out of that place and if there’s a market that might have some reverence for the opportunity it would be them, not to mention that it’s not a crazy distance away. And though them staying is absolutely my preference, Utah doesn’t deserve a team - let alone this team - frankly.

Flame on.
Since moving to Portland, I'd actually be pretty stoked in a backwards way if they went to Seattle :D I could actually attend home games again

Buy high(Conley) and sell low(Hood, Exum, Burks, etc)

Then he pays a premium and buys another overheated stock to get a surefire winner this time. Even though his stock broker jerked him around and leaked his plans out to the local papers 3-4 months earlier in hopes of raising the purchase price of said stock.

You’re not gonna convince anyone on the merit of your position(s) by suggesting that trading Exum for Clarkson, Hood for Crowder, or Burks for Korver were bad.

In short, all three players you just mentioned are ***.
Its buy, hold, and only sell when you're hand is forced.

Sure, and I have my criticisms, but good god, those trades are better examples of DL’s competence than they are examples of his incompetence.

One of his best attributes is salvaging situations, one of his worst is putting the Jazz in those situations to begin with.
My biggest issue is the "we have to maintain flexibility" then doesn't do anything meaningful with the flexibility. There is a big opportunity cost in staying flexible.

The Ricky Rudy Favs breakup was too late and we still don't know what happens if you just move one of those parts.

Fixating on one guy (whether it is draft trade or FA).

He's done pretty well in the fringe trades though.

Interestingly, the Ricky-Rudy-Faves scenario is one he went out of his way to create AND failed at salvaging it.

well, first we didn't just trade Exum for JC or Burks for Korver. we traded AB+2 picks for korver then Exum+2 picks for Clarkson. That is a total of FOUR picks that we've given up in the process. you can call these tiny little 2nd rounders whatever you want but when you pack these picks in bunches you bet that **** has values on the trade market.

it is bad especially consider that we only had half season of korver, and likely half season of JC too if we failed to reach the extension. it's not like these guys are AD or kawhi in which even if they walk after playing just a few games could still help make all the difference. KK and JC are both just role players drafted by the same tiny little second rounders that we've given up.

Not to mention that same Crowder/Burks/Hood you called ****, Grizz/GSW/Cavs still managed to sell them for multiple draft picks, whereas DL sold them by giving aways picks... it's the very definition of lowballing, which is why we are currently out of second round pick this season and likely the first round pick next season... all for what exactly?

well, guess what? the last thing we have this summer is "flexibility". we are now stuck in a bad situation which DL created. one of the things that doomed us in the playoffs was bench depth and surely guys like Hood, AB, Crowder could've helped us with that. Just take Niang's minutes and split some of Royce's 35 minutes per game. not a big ask. or had we kept any of the 4 2nd round picks that we've given up in the Korver/JC trade i'm sure it'd help too

this is my biggest complaint about the Jazz and some of the fans who just give picks away like candy. Other teams do not do it very often. It especially pisses me off when we are taking back salary like in the Conley deal.

Well the Jazz have done precisely nothing with 2nd rounders since DL’s been here so they are kind of candy from that perspective.

Then just trade them. 4 future second could’ve easily get you a mid-to-late first or as vehicle to trade up in any draft. The way DL hand them out like trick or treat is absolutely the wrong way to do it

yep, i'm sure we gave up one additional pick in the Conley trade just so to convince Memphis to help us take on Korver's last year contract cuz DL didn't wanna deal with it. so basicially we gave away three picks on Korver's deal alone(if you not couting the number of picks that GSW was able to get by trading AB a season later). and not to mention the pieces that memphis got by trading korver themselves.

we are giving away picks in deals which we should've reieived them. we are being taken advantage of in deals which we should've taken advantage ourselves.

And somehow people here think that DL did a good job in these deals. now we are in a tight spot which we lack picks(for trade or for use) AND lack bench depth. with little to no options to expand this current squad any further. FLEXIBILITY

At least wait till we actually bring JC back, shall we? it'd be a nightmare if we lose him too, all for nothing.
