What's new

Jazz select Udoka Azubuike with pick 27 & trade Tony Bradley + pick 38 to the Pistons

Why can’t we count on Hughes? Who could we have counted on instead? And why? I want specifics
It's tough to take one prospect or rookie and say we can count on him... that's why you take a couple and hope one hits. There is a saying about eggs and baskets that is relevant here.

Not even Rudy was ready to be the backup center for a playoff team his rookie year. I'm sure this kid steps in and is fire from day one... I'm sure Quin won't go to a more reliable vet and will be just fine struggling through the rookie brain farts...

There is this new spin that is going on right now trying to convince us that Azubuike is a good pick because now we have "48 minutes of great defense". I cannot stress enough how much of a BS this is.

It's like... it's just a given that a guy drafted at the end of the first will be worthy sub for 2 time DPOY , 3 times All NBA center. Like oh yeah... sure... that's like 48 minutes of elite rim protection now, right? Like wut? Why the hell would he drop to 27 if he was that much of a surefire rim protector and defensive presence? There is nothing certain about Azubuike! We don't know if he will be good or not defensively, we don't know if he will be good rolling to the rim at that level... we don't know whether he will make good decisions on the short roll(under 1AST per game and 2.5TO per game suggest that maybe not)... ironically the most surefire thing we know about him is that he will very likely miss most of his FTAs... that's it...

So improve upon the wings. You can find decent wings everywhere. Udoka is elite talent. You don’t just find 7 footers that can jump out of the gym like that.

I think the real focus is Conley. I didn’t want Conley. Seems like that’s the elephant in the room that some of you are ignoring. Rather than bash this draft why not focus on getting rid of the worthless aging 4 foot PG we have?
A lot of us didn't want Conley. It made no sense then and it makes no sense now.

The second myth is that the draft is the only place to get that... you can't get a minimum center like John Henson or Alex Len... you definitely can't use the BAE to get an upper tier guy like Baynes.

People forget that Favors struggled as a drop big for a year with Rudy off the floor.

We need to play zone honestly and just anchor Udoka to the paint imo. He will get cooked on the perimeter... Like Tony is better on the perimeter than he is. Maybe Hughes can teach Quin about zone defenses since he came from Syracuse.

Well we do know his stats last season were pretty much a carbon-copy of Rudy's stats last season. College vs. pro's yeah, but still.

Do we want 7 footers shooting 3s? I’d prefer he set picks and destroy the rim. We have 4 other players who can shoot 3s.
Yes!!!!! Shooting bigs open the paint completely up so our perimeter guys can score inside.

I think you might be underrating his quickness.

I don’t understand why we can’t depend on Hughes but somehow can depend on the other rookie wings people have been pushing around here. To me, they’re all about the same, long shots. Hughes at least has a hell of a shot.

I just had

i feel like the playoffs proved that small ball doesnt work. Or did the rockets win the championship without me knowing? How about the clippers? Celtics? All of them embraced small ball. How’d it work out?
The Lakers won with size, not despite of it. They had 3 legit bigs, Denver had 2, we had 1.

even the warriors relied on bigs like Bogut and McGee to win.

We lost a lot when we got rid of favors last year. I love this move rebuilding our frontline.
I'm not sure you watched the playoffs. It was a wonky playoff anyway. Houston, the Clips, and Celtics all did better than us so...

You need some bigs but if those bigs can't shoot, pass, dribble, or defend on the perimeter then they will be marginalized. We have no bigs that do those things. Bam does all of those things except shoot at this point... AD does them all... Jokic is elite at all of them except defense. Bogut was an elite passing big man and one of the best screen setters ever. Even he was marginalized as the playoffs advanced.

Heat's backup big was Kelly Olynyk... shooting passing dribbling. It's just so obvious.

Its not necessarily about size... its about skill and size. Again... Xavier Tillman was sitting there and he has as great chance to bring everything you'd want... and you passed for the traditional big guy.

Thanks for proving my point. Going small will only guarantee being a 2nd or 3rd tier team. We cannot out small ball the better small ball teams out there. Might as well build off our strengths and use size as an advantage. If we’re going to try to out small ball the rockets, celtics, etc then we’re going to be very disappointed.

If I give you a 15% chance at $1M or I give you 2 - 15% chances at $1M which is better?

Really... which unskilled big guy has lead his team to a title? Udoka isn't better than Robert Williams who became unplayable.

Huh? That’s not even a valid comparison.

The wings in the late first round were just as risky as the wing we took in the second round. We upgraded our frontline while adding a wing just as dependable as anyone else. Why are people bitching?

and I love how you avoided my other questions.

Big athletic dudes who dunk can also score inside.
Bigs that can shoot can score inside and outside but they also spread the defense. Do you play basketball... not trying to be a dick just generally wondering for conversation purposes.
