At What Point Does 'Dok Overtake Whiteside?

Udoka seems like he's gotten significantly better the last few weeks. Maybe it's the game slowing down for him, maybe it's his conditioning improving, but he looks a lot better than Whiteside lately.

At what point do you put Udoka over Whiteside on the depth chart and make him the main backup to Rudy?

Who knows, maybe he already did considering he started and finished games without Rudy. We'll see if once he's back they'll have Whiteside as the backup basically because let's please the veteran, or he'll get the nod.

But at this point maybe the main reason not to trade Hassan is injury insurance ? I mean, not much for Rudy, we're screwed if he's down, but for Udoka, as we may not trust his health body yet and Gay and Paschall ain't enough as small ball 5 (maybe they could be if we add size, strength and athleticism to our small ball lineups, who knows, but right now, they don't).

The problem with keeping Hassan for injury insurance is he will bail mentally. He would be worthless as a third string if he need to get real minutes.

He has already overtaken him as the starter. At least technically, lol.

Need a look after Gobert comes back because Whiteside was having a pretty good stretch before the injuries. It just seems to me he gets more liberal with more minutes and less structure.

Don't get your hopes up, he's just being shopped along with Butler. Snyder is not that adventurous. And we'll probably end up with seller's remorse to go with our buyer's remorse on top of that. Hopefully not!

And for the record, I've always said he had the tools, only needed polish. When you look at what our boy Bradley has been able to do in a reserve role in Chicago, you can only imagine what a stud like Dok will be like once he gains a little experience. I mean he wasn't Big Twelve player of the year for nothing.

It's a real concern, but at the same time, but how many out of contract decent bigs are out there, especially on the basic rim protector, screen and roll type (and Hassan not even that adept of the screen and roll part) ? Pelle wasn't able to outplay a non-engaged looking Whiteside. If we ship or bought him out, are we hoping to snatch some big out of the waiver wire ?

Dok's conditioning is getting better. I watched him up close during Summer League, and he couldn't play for more than 5-minute stints. For him to be effective, he needs to keep his energy level high. He's got the size, reach and mass to be disruptive, but he's got to stay light on his feet. The plays and the finishes will come if he can stay on the floor long enough to find rhythm.

I have my doubts he's that committed to being a basketball player (how can a professional athlete be so god damn winded all the time) is maybe my biggest concern.

But it would sure be nice to get anything out of that god damn draft pick we burned to get him.

I liked the pick when we made it and that has never changed. The tools that Dok has are intriguing and definitely worth the risk where he was picked up. He is still raw but It is not uncommon for bigs to be slow developing. The center position is more important in the Jazz scheme than most if not any other NBA team and it is not easy to find good back ups. I think we have proved that. I am still not convinced that Dok will make it but in my view it was worth the gamble for a draft pick and it wont surprise me if Dok becomes a solid NBA starter. Happy to be in the minority on this one.

Dok had a great close to the game, but was definitely rough the first three quarters. Was too tentative chasing boards.

Dok is what he is. If he really committed himself to his conditioning, I think he will make Whiteside expendable.

For those who know - have we picked up his option for next year yet? Is his contract ($2.174) guaranteed?

Since that's the case, I think we should rely on him.

In the postseason, we should expect Rudy to play around 35 minutes per night. That leaves about a quarter. I think a combination of Dok, Gay and Paschall can handle that 13 minutes. Whiteside isn't that much of an upgrade on those guys is he?

If Whiteside has any value whatsoever in the trade market if added to another deal, I think we should trade him. I don't want to see another Tony Bradley situation where he is actually a solid backup C but he never got minutes to prove himself. And I doubt Whiteside is some long term Jazz player.
