Should Donovan be the starting point guard next season?

Tony Jones wrote a really interesting article after last nights game. Basically said that Mitchell probably needs to be a full time point guard next season and that the Jazz should look to surround him with 3 athletic wings in the starting lineup who can defend at a high level and knock down shots. Kind of sounds like the Jazz are planning on moving on from Conley next season, it also sounds like they have no plans to make Jared Butler a part of the starting lineup in the future. I'm also not sure where that leaves Bogey, because he's not athletic and doesn't defend at a high level. Tony is extremely plugged in seems to have more sources within the organization than pretty much anyone, so I believe he's hearing from people in the organization that this is the direction the Jazz want to go moving forward.

On Sunday night, Snyder went with Mitchell and Gobert. He started Juancho Hernangomez, Royce O’Neale and Nickeil Alexander-Walker around those two. So, the Jazz’s starting lineup consisted of Mitchell, three wings who all defend at a high level and Gobert. With no Conley, who sat on the first night of a back-to-back, and no Bojan Bogdanovic, it gave Snyder the opportunity to go with a lineup that should serve as a blueprint around Mitchell in the future.

“I liked it,” Gobert said. “Those guys have been playing well defensively and hustling and making plays. It was a different look. It made us a bigger team on the perimeter. It was definitely a fun lineup to play with.”

The Jazz were able to play one of their best games defensively Sunday around Mitchell. Because Mitchell was so dynamic offensively, and because the wings could all shoot, the Jazz were a two-way team at Madison Square Garden. Whenever the offseason comes for the Jazz, it’s probably time for Mitchell to move to the point guard spot exclusively. He’s clearly ready, and he’s getting to the point where it’s just not wise not to have the ball in his hands on every possession, whether he shoots it or not.

Sunday’s rotation looks like a structural alignment around him. Surround him with long and athletic wings who defend and can make shots. Have a secondary ballhandler — like Jordan Clarkson, who scored 23 points Sunday night off the bench — who can eat possessions and play with bench units. And then, have your star big man in the paint, being an anchor defensively and a vertical-lob threat on the offensive end.

The Houston Rockets did this when they had James Harden. Utah probably shouldn’t go to that extreme because that extreme essentially tired out Harden by the end of every season. But wing play around dynamic guards wins in this league. Mitchell’s position was probably always going to end up at the point. As a shooting guard, he’s small, even with his 6-foot-10 wingspan. But, as a point guard, he’s got terrific size. There aren’t many in the league at that position who can match his length, athleticism and build. It was simply a matter of how long it would take him to master the spot.

Utah is 15-5 in its past 20 games. But this trip will be as challenging as any stretch the Jazz have faced all season. At the same time, Mitchell’s ability to raise his game, and Utah’s ability to figure out issues on the fly has got to be encouraging to a fan base hoping for a deep playoff run.

Donny is playing plenty of PG already and this seems like the obvious and maybe only path forward but not sure how far we get next year. The size of the "the athletic wings" will probably vary and I imagine we still have Mike next year as part of the equation. Butler being in the rotation as one of the wings or maybe even the back up PG seems like a real possibility.

I don't think so. I don't think Mike wants to come off the bench and I definitely don't think the Jazz are going to pay him $25 million to be a backup. I'll be very surprised if he doesn't get traded in the offseason.

How about we beat two or three teams with a winning record before we assume this lineup works?
This.

I do believe, however, and have been advocating for since he was drafted, that DM should be our point guard. He does his best work with the ball in his hands. Put a big defensive-minded 3&D guard next to him, or maybe even a combo guard like, oh Brogdon, and that is a winning combo. That is exactly what I wanted us to do instead of bring in Conley. Interestingly enough now others are coming around to the same idea.

Truthfully, against 5-out lineups, Mitchell and Conley shouldn't be on the floor together. Mitchell + 3 defensive wings + Gobert should be the counter.
Mitchell, NAW, O'Neale, House, Gobert.

Not bad.

Mitchell, Butler, O'Neale, House, Gobert

Could work.

Mitchell, Conley, Clarkson, Gay, Gobert?

Eh, probably not.

Duh. Should have happened like 4 years ago.
Thanks for the article though.
Yeah the media is slow to the game on this one for sure. This is what a lot of us wanted instead of Conley.

Some of us been on this corner for a long time.

I also don't think you make sweeping judgements based on games against the Knicks. Donovan's playmaking has gotten a lot better.

This.

I think you're right. If we hadn't put all that money and player assets into Conley and moved DM, who's small into the position best suited for small players, instead of doubling down on a small starting backcourt we probably could have bigger defensive wings to put next to him.

Not to go there because that's so far gone at this point, but if stupid *** Hayward had just stuck around I think this team with a Gobert/Hayward/Donovan core could have already won a damn championship.

Having three wings around Donovan and Rudy was always the best formula to use IF one of the wings can also create a bit. That might be the hardest thing in the league to find... so good luck.

Tony's suggestion that you go Donovan and then mix in JC with a bunch of wings who really can't create is no bueno. Ideally you need like a Paul George at SF to make it work at the highest levels... Halliburton is another guy that would be a perfect mix on offense. Conley's playmaking and ability to just run an offense would need to be replaced. Its probably a little late to make this pivot.

Since early on I thought it would be good to transition him to PG, partly because (his rookie year?) he had a really high FG% on passes thrown and seemed to make good reads, then partly because of the size issue. But that feeling soured quite a bit the past few years as he really needs another ball handler next to him to take some of the pressure off (which doesn’t have to be a PG but typically is). My fear about it is that he seems to get a bit of Marty McFly syndrome. He can’t stand down to someone calling him chicken. When other teams apply the pressure with him as the only ball handler, he seems to view that as a challenge and stops thinking rationally and feels he’s got something to prove. I blame this same reason for his really poor clutch numbers. I’m not enthused to completely commit to that. If he can show that he can throw it in reverse rather that crashing into a Rolls Royce (not Royce), then we may really be on to something.

Agreed.

I agree if they can find a taker but that may not be very easy.

And I will say this about Dononvan, in a scenario where he could get a layup or get another player a layup, he always takes the layup. His mentality is overwhelmingly score first.

Doesn’t matter if he’s PG or SG…but it also doesn’t make sense to have two 6’1 guys who can’t defend and 1.5 wings who also can’t defend. The whole idea that he absolutely had to have a “PG” next to him was dumb. Mike Conley works because Mike Conley is good at basketball and it’s good to have more than one guy who can create offense, but the FO never should have treated it like a requirement.

However things go, Conley and/or Bogey should be put on the trade market. Hopefully Thibs still has a job and wants to make a trade. I’d be open to something like Conley for Fournier+Reddish.

I like Mitchell more as a SG, but two 6’1 guards doesn’t work. Either get a tall PG or move Donovan there. If they go Donovan as PG they definitely should invest in a veteran PG to come of the bench.

Why? I bet Conley would have a pretty large market actually. He is a great teammate, veteran, elite shooter, and plays well on both sides of the floor. Only issue for the Jazz is his size. Plus, the last year of his contract is only partially guaranteed.

Off the top of my head I could see: Chicago, Washington, both LA teams, Boston, Toronto, and New York all potentially have interest.
