If it weren't for the ****** jerseys I'd be more excited about this year than I have been in a long time. The year the Jazz were supposed to have the worst record in the league and ended up being the emergence of Harpring and Bell was a really fun year IMO.

Hell, I'm old enough to remember when Utah just let their two best players expire with NO picks then used that vaunted capspace to facilitate Golden State's first championship. This is better.

However strongly you feel about this, I'm certain Danny Ainge feels stronger.

I think the allure to tanking is that it can produce a title. If you get the top tier talent with your own picks and the other picks fill out the roster because they are late firsts... then so be it. If they become lotto picks like we have seen happen.... A LOT. Then you are in even better shape.

We had two really great players but couldn't put the requisite talent around them. Both guys had some flaws that make building around them a little difficult.

That's the hope of course, but there's hope both ways. When you're tanking, you have zero pressure to win in the moment and hope is infinite. If you win a game, you won. If you lost, you win anyways. When you're actually trying to win, you have to do it and anything short of winning is extra frustrating.

Personally, I will take it to the grave that the previous version of the Jazz did not fail because of Mitchell and Gobert, but the team built around them. No they are not perfect, but the execution to build around them was horrific and downright embarrassing. It would have been a longshot to build a true contender around them, especially after all the mistakes that were made, but tanking for a title is also a longshot. If I was a GM and I didn't believe I sucked, I would have definitely held onto those two. But I also wouldn't have done the horrid management job that we saw the last couple of seasons.

Winning a title is a long shot in general. I think rebuilding is the way you get the top tier talent needed to win at the highest levels. I just think if you do it a year early instead of a year late you extract a premium that will help us to ensure the rebuild is a success.

If you combine gathering high quality draft capital (unprotected picks) and tanking it could be pretty wild. I think really only OKC has tried it to this extent, and they have been out of the playoffs for two years now. We haven't really seen a team hit huge on both fronts... they have great lotto luck and have a few of the other teams they bet against suck. I also think teams have never been this cavalier with picks in the modern era and some teams will come out big winners.

I envision us being the team that is top-4 seed in 2025 that got a top-5 pick from one of these deals. One of those like they are already up and coming and have a top-5 pick this year? It would be like if Memphis got one this year.

Between the Minny trade, the coming Don trade, and the other stuff that Danny has on this roster that he can pawn off... he may end up with a collection of picks that Presti can only dream of. I know I know... you gotta use em somehow and turn them into players... yada yada. I just think in a one year period he can stack the ledger like no one has before. Then you can build from the ground up intelligently rather than patching something together.
 
I was against it at first, but now I'm cool with the tank. Watching Summer League, and seeing the blue chips, scrubs ball out has me ready to see who's going to do what in this squad. I'm ready to see Malik Beasley put up 20 ppg, Walker Kessler grow into the next elite rim protector, Caboclo "two years away from being two years away" making everyone say "he finally made it! ", Vanderbilt evolving his game, Jared Butler having good & ugly games, but have flashes of looking like a top 20 point guard, NAW throwing up random 30 point games. It's gonna be interesting. Hopefully we bring Whiteside back to soften the blow with his laid back, dorky attitude.
 
Also, this tank will be MUCH different than the Corbin era tank where he stunted Alec Burks growth and played the vets heavy minutes. I'm pretty sure Will Hardy is going to give minutes to whoever shows up to ball. Makes me want to see a squad where Will & the team all grow together to build a dynasty that wins multiple rings.
 
If they’re going to tank, then they need to completely effing commit to it. If the plan is to trade Mitchell, then they need to draw blood in the process. There’s no reason to give him away for anything less than a franchise altering deal. If you can’t get that - keep him.

Beyond that - Bogey, Clarkson, Conley, Beverley and Beasley should all be moved for maximum return. Get the young guys loads of playing time and see if any of them are worth keeping two years into the building process. And if not? Bite the bullet and move on.

If they hadn’t bungled all of the stuff on the margins and preserved any kind of assets and flexibility thereof, there’s any kind of argument for re-tooling. As it stands, the Jazz have no ways to improve and will only get worse. I honestly don’t see how one could come to a different conclusion, at which point the topic of disagreement is whether being a bottom-4 playoff team for two years, then a play-in team for two years, is worth it.
