Once I get down to like 189.8 (my weight), I might do this movie and Midnight Run and drink.
 
Blow Up (1966) — The inspiration for Depalma’s remake entitled Blowout fifteen years later, the film takes much, much longer to get to the “hook” and the slow burn works. Two exceptional scenes stood out to me. The scene as our protagonist photographs in the park, specifically as he photographs the couple…the other scene about a half hour later as he begins to analyze the photographs from the park. The use of silence and feeling of “process of it all” in both scenes was exceptional.

I don't know if any of you have seen this. If you like noir, this is the noiriest. And Alain Delon is simply one of the most beautiful human beings ever to grace the planet.

Didn't hate it. Didn't find it worth the hype either. I love all the actors. They did a great job. But like everything else, it always comes down to punching them more than or harder than they punch you. But the fight scenes were pretty fresh all things considered.

Unfortunately kung Fu hustle kind of ruined karate action movies for me. The parody was so perfect, nothing else matches up.

If you only watched it as a martial arts movie, you missed a lot. Martial arts/drama/sciencefiction/philosophy/feels/comedy.

Oh I got the philosophy aspect. Just came across as heavy-handed to me. I liked the multiverse aspect. Not dissimilar to jet Li in the one. I just didn't find this as transcendent as it was hyped to be. Thought the story was ok. Special effects were good. Just found it an ok Film. Nothing more.

Question though, how does one watch a movie as a "fill in the blank" movie? Seems like accusing someone of that is just a way to ad hominem what is essentially purely a matter of opinion. "Well you just obviously don't watch movies deep enough if you just see the 'martial arts movie'." Maybe it's was actually just not as good to some people at it was to others.

Was the Shawshank redemption just a prison movie? I'm sure some people think so.

Hey, you're the one who only referenced the martial arts aspects. (And I personally preferred Shaolin Soccer to Kung-Fu Hustle, but de gustibus non disputandum est.)

Nah I just found that like so many other movies it boils down to punching.
 
Watched "Thirteen Lives" on Prime yesterday. It is the story of 12 kids and their coach stuck in a cave in Thailand in 2018. Directed by Ron Howard and starring Viggo Mortensen and Colin Farrell. Tense even if you know what happens.

Watched Alex Garland's Men. The ending is quite something, I'll say. Body horror starts off pretty nuts and only keeps getting more and more disturbing. He puts you front and center of it all. The CGI/practical effects look good, knowing Garland I'm sure he probably spent hours upon hours of looking at footage to come up with something truly horrific. I've seen some gross out body horror, this up there.

It's ultimately kind of what the movie will be known for but I was enjoying the visuals and the acting was great. A downside was I felt the material felt like it started to be stretched thin a bit before we get to the climax. But if you want a unique nightmarish experience, go for it.
 
Just watched the new All Quiet on the Western Front on Netflix. 2 1/2 hour movie and it was great. I’m heading to France in about 10 days and we have some days scheduled for WW1 and WW2 history. Trench warfare was hell and I’m excited to learn more about it where it happened.

By far the best historical production on WW1 that I had the befit of happening across was the Blueprint for Armageddon series by Dan Carlin. For a long time he had it available for free on his website but now it looks like he's charging $15 for it.

I watched The Northman. It was ok but a little too witchcrafty imo.
