What can we get for Sexton in a trade?

I'd like to see if he can be coached into being a smarter player first before giving up on him.

I think we are already seeing this as not possible. After nearly 20 games he hasn't really changed his game at all. I don't see that getting much better. He has way too much of a score-at-all-costs mentality.

That said, it is perfect for the tank, but not conducive to winning. So if we are in win-now mode, we need to move him for a win-now piece. Otherwise keep him or just move him for a future asset. Either way I cannot see him in the long-term plans as limited as he is. He is a one-legged homeless man with dementia's Donovan Mitchell with none of Mitchell's play-making ability or charisma.

Jazz currently aren't going to get anything for Sexton except a bad contract in return. He's not a PG. He doesn't look like the same dude from 2 years ago before the injury. A serious meniscus tear is not a minor thing for a player whose entire game was based on athleticism. Lonzo isn't a guy that relied so much on athleticism and he can't get back on the court at all after his meniscus injuries.

To me he's looking confused on the court. He's reminding me of Piston era Reggie Jackson. Detroit eventually ended up buying him out. Jackson didn't figure out the game until he got to the Pistons late in his career.

I would look at the Mavs. They are desperate for guards/scoring. They don't really need another PG. Sexton would just need to get open next to Luka. They already have a backup PG in Dinwiddie. Jazz would probably need to take back a bad contract such as Tim Hardaway JR or Bertans though.

With the obvious exception of Lauri the Donovan trade is looking a little rough. Agbaji and Sexton look to be long term projects. Hopefully Cavs start to unravel by the end of this decade when their picks are due.

The Cavs timeline is about right for when the picks come due. It coincides nicely with the time that Mitchell leaves, and believe me he will NOT stay in Cleveland. They will fall apart and enter their own re-build, or half-*** it until the picks all convey, either way they will likely be lottery at that time.

Not one person said he couldn't score. In fact, that is the main complaint, is that he focuses on nothing but scoring to the detriment of the rest of the game and his team-mates, and at scoring he just isn't as elite as he thinks he is. Therein lies the problem.

The problem is that Sexton can't play off the ball. Like, at all. He's literally never done it in his entire life. If he doesn't have the rock, he's waiting for it instead of making himself useful. There's no in-between.

IMO it's possible that he spends the last couple of years of this contract sitting on someone's bench, out of the rotation. Just a player who's a very tough fit in the modern NBA, where ball movement and switchability are important.

Could we trade him for Crowder? We need more nasty on the floor and better defense with longer players. Crowder fits the bill. We don't need more small ball-dominant guards with tunnel vision.

He's a small 6'-1" guard that needs to be off ball. Conley + Sexton were actually our best 2 man lineup although that's probably not the case after the past few games.

I also don't think JC + Sexton is a fit together on the court as they both have the same weaknesses. JC is just beginning to distribute the ball in his 9th season but still falls into bad habits of taking quick, bad shots.

With Conley out I would even say Olynyk might be the best "PG" on the roster.

I'm not super concerned with Sexton. He has been playing mostly good defense and some nights he adds a nice scoring boost. We weren't supposed to be this winning oriented and he was going to have some opportunities to grow. Those growth moments have cost us in sometimes... if it happens in a tanky year no problem.

I see him trying and that is where some of his miscues happen. He started stopping for the floater instead of going at the rim every time. He did a Nash dribble and tried to sneak one past Zubac instead of just going right at him. Ideally someone cuts when he engages the center that far under the basket and hopefully Collin sees them. The three he missed wasn't a bad shot... but he hesitated and once you are out of rhythm you should just get into a set.

Hardy wants more from him than just a bench scorer... that's why he is driving him hard. Honestly Beasley was just as rough or rougher than Collin last night. Got blown by multiple times and looked like he had zero energy. Sexton definitely gives full effort... even if it leads to some BS.

Fit is not ideal with JC... if a good deal came around for Sexton then I'd be cool moving on... but we have 4 years to be patient here.

I agree about this partially. Going 1on1 defense vs smaller guards he is awesome. He stays in good position and doesnt give open lanes.

However his switches, play around screens and support awareness are not good. He also should get more steals due to his size and quickness.

This. Although the fact that it happens nearly every time he rebounds the ball tells me that is the gameplan. Anyone who has the ball get it up court as fast as possible seems to be what the coach wants. He isn't the only one who does this, he just seems the most clueless once he gets into the front court.

I understand grab and go... he just goes too far with it... 2-3 dribbles in it should be out to the most open guard. The double dribble turnover one was rough as I am not sure where he was even trying to go. Thought it was a foul and more of a bobble but you play stupid games you win stupid prizes.

Ideally you would have someone like a Lonzo ball next to Sexton, or some kind of star wing who has a large playmaking role so Sexton can do what he does best.
