2023 NBA Draft Megathread

No ceilings did a mock draft... if you aren't familiar with them they are the nerdiest of draft nerds that ever nerded, but I like their stuff and the site looks really nice.

They had their team do the mock... we ended with Wallace, Dick, Strawther... they had Hendricks at 10...

There may be some group think with them... but I think it would be fun to guess where a group of people who follow the draft all year ended up selecting Kyle Filipowski... like take a guess before you actually click the link. Again... not the end all be all.
Jarace Walker at 4 and Jett Howard at 7 lmao

Nice.

Walker would absolutely waste away on Charlotte. Maybe any prospect would. But Walker would completely disappear for the better part of a decade. Maybe becomes a reclamation project down the line.

tbf, he's only ranked there bc they don't think he will declare (I kid)

I think Howard is the biggest surprise for me.
They are super nerds... so a guy going too high is not surprising... only takes one person right... a guy falling with a group is a little different... but again it could be group think and if you listen to their pods they have too little disagreement imo... so that may be taking hold. With the way the board unfolded I probably would have taken Filipowski for the Jazz at #28... and I'm not a huge fan obvi.

HH being insecure about Flip is hilarious. It’s ok if you didn’t watch him and just made some general comments that you regret making. Not going to age well at all.

I actually kinda like the fit with Ball. Charlotte is a dumpster fire though... I wouldn't want to go there for sure.

I'm telling yall... we have seen the limitations of this style with Harden. Luka will need to change his game up to win a title unless he has an amazing supporting cast. Its also not fun to watch. Its even less fun to play with unless you are a guy that needs Luka to be successful. I know NY put the full court press on Brunson but its a little shocking they couldn't work things out since they were a conference finalist last year right?

I don't think it limits him, it's just awful to watch. Luka has been big time in the playoffs several times over. He's been worn down, there's definitely truth to that, but he's not had great teams and you can easily point to other massive superstars having tough series/moments. I try not to have massive swings on opinions due to playoffs because almost every guy who we consider "that dude" was grilled until he wasn't.

My gripe with Luka is that half the time he's playing it feels like a disgrace to basketball. It's so ugly.

Ain't insecure at all... this is a group of nerds that watch everybody... and they waited on him until the second round. I have said a bunch that the draft is more luck than many want to admit and I don't consider myself great at it. So if he is awesome it won't bother me at all. Jokic might be a three time mvp and he was taken in the second round.

The things I value and look for in draft prospects relate to nba role and bigs that don't protect the rim and don't shoot and also don't project as switchy defenders are guys I will pass on. I will likely miss the next Sabonis... I'm okay with that.

I would have taken Wallace and Dick if we were at those picks with those decisions. With the last pick I would have gone with Coulibaly/Clowney.

Most draft people are down on Flip for sure. ESPN is the highest on him that I've seen

He had an amazing ACC tourney... no doubt... so opinions may change. The player type I think he projects to be if the shooting comes around I just don't see as crazy high upside as a guy like Hendo if he is able to self create a bit more or Sidy if the defense improves a bit and the shooting comes around... etc. Until like the 20s if a big doesn't protect the rim (like at an elite level) or shoot the **** out of the ball or project to be a Bam type dude... then I'm likely out.

Haven’t watched Strawther but I would understand Bilal, Clowney, Strawther or Filipowski there… I’m good with a lot of the options. My preference would be to find a way to move up 8-10 spots as I think there are some better bets there.

Flip does protect the rim enough and he will be able to shoot.

I just don't think he gets enough credit for being an absolute baller and is one of the more pigeonholed prospects in this class. I don't know exactly what he will be at the next level, but I think he figures out and becomes a valuable player. I think NBA teams, or a team, will value him higher than draft nerds will and he'll go top 20. I have Duke going to the final 4 so he will have more games to impress imo.

I believe he will be able to shoot... the rim protection I have serious doubts at the next level. Starting bigs can't just be okay at protecting the paint if you are building a top 15 defense. If they are just okay at it the other stuff they bring has to be awesome.

I'm not sure where the drop off line is, but I think we're pretty close to it.

Wemby
Scoot
Miller
Jarace
Whitmore
Amen
Ausar
Black
George
Wallace

So with those 10 guys I'd be very content and wouldn't feel a need to trade up unless you're trading up for a higher tier within this group. Other guys I might put there are Dick and Hendricks, which makes it 12. So if we're at 13 that's when I feel like we missed out if things go chalk (according to my board).

I've watched about 3.5 games of JHS recently....still don't love him the way others do. Saw him play both well and poorly, don't love him as a lottery prospect....but I guess I understand the peel even if I'm not buying it.

I did watch Colby Jones as well since you mentioned him, I kinda like him. I don't think he's as good as Quickley, but he's kind of a similar player. I like him as a combo guard who is a menace on defense and he also has a good enough PnR game to get by on offense.

A superb above average role player which probably better than a couple of selections around him. It could be what some teams need, even the Jazz.
