2023 NBA Draft Megathread

I know this my seem irrational but with a top 20 pick I’m looking for a guy that has a ceiling of what would be a top 7 or 8 ish player in that particular draft… unless it turns out to be a great draft. Landing say the 15th best player in an average draft with the 20th pick is not like a big win… it’s not a big L…

Not sure if that makes sense or seems dumb… later in the draft I think you can try and hit a single… if you are cap strapped finding a rotation player in the draft can be a bigger win but with where we are I’m taking bigger swings.

I get the notion. One of my unpopular opinions around here is that DL actually had an amazing draft record, and that's because he drafted two HOF players at 27 and 13. The magnitude of that kind of hit is way bigger than people give him credit for. If you don't believe me, add a HOF to any team picking in the middle or late first round and think about what that would do to their franchise.

Having said that, I think ceiling is a tricky thing. I see Flip's ceiling much differently than you. In fact, I brought up the point that he's the better "big man with some skill" prospect than GG. Often times the guys who do end up being triples and home runs later in the draft are not the "high ceiling" guys and sometimes they were specifically drafted lower because of a "low ceiling". I've actually made it a point to look for guys who don't fit the typical high ceiling profile who I think have a chance to be really good. For the most part, I think people have their eyes set on a Kawhi type development, where you get the freak athlete and he develops all the skills as a pro. But there are a lot of Jimmy Butler, Brunson, Bane etc who drop because they are older/not the greatest physical tools and are boxed into being role players. Ceiling/Floor, these are nice conversation points but sometimes it feels as much of a crap shoot as the draft as a whole. We really don't know.

Anyways, I think I saw a consensus mock today that had Flip around (which is why I thought I might be considered a fan for ranking him in the mid 20's but I am not the fan others are). I didn't know what context KO was being used in, but if there are 10 players in a draft better than KO it's a deep draft so I thought it was weird to use KO as a diss for someone who is 1st round bubble guy. I'm always going to beat the "let's be rationale/realistic about the draft" drum. Having said that, I would not put Flip's ceiling as low as KO. It's not the reason I would rule him out. I think if everything works out he can be pretty good, but do not confuse me for someone who is guaranteeing that he will be good at the things he's been very bad at haha.

No Ceilings ain't got **** on this
Oh my… did he also declare Evans was a “baller”. I’m kidding… we all have our misses. I love Elie Okobo… that did not go well.

I really don’t even know why I liked Evans lmao. To be fair he was a second round pick but I was saying some wild ****.

I once compared Tatum to Tobias Harris. So yeah, I've come in a little low on some guys before... (Most people didn't see Tatum becoming a top 5-8 player though.)

So I haven’t really followed Scoot….but his numbers are so much worse than I expected. I feel like you’re taking him off of hype/tools and not production.

But at that point, would you just take Amen? I’ve been sussy about the Twins performance in OTE and questioning what it means (if it means anything at all)….but I will say Amen in particular an crazy impressive athlete and more impressive than Scoot. His shot looks bad, but Scoot’s shot isn’t going in the basket much either.

I’m late, but yeah im in the Miller > Scoot camp.

Just looked it up, Tyler Lydon doesnt even play basketball anywhere. He retired after playing in The Basketball Tournament.

Scoot is a maniac worker... He is going to be so good. His numbers aren't where you'd like them to be but the level of competition is like 10 steps up from OTE.

If you have a PG or lead ball handler then sure go with Miller... if you don't Scoot is that dude. Saw an article or tweet or something that was talking about Scoot giving up on a play late in the game and being critical... then realizing on game day the guy had put in like 3-4 hours of HARD work in the gym beforehand. I think he has used the games as a bit of a tutorial and is putting in work to build towards his NBA career. Not saying he doesn't take it seriously... the game he played against Vic he was awesome... he has the athletic pop of a Ja with a lebron like build... and he did some high level playmaking stuff.

I have zero worries about Scoot and he's shown enough progress as a shooter that I think that will come. Dude is a maniac worker by all accounts (look at his body for hells sake). If we are sitting at #2 and pass I'd be pretty pissed.

It did not seem like he liked basketball or working at basketball.

Going through the Euro circuit a huge grind, especially if you are dealing with injuries since teams aren't paying for your surgeries/rehab. I guess he found some other way to make money.
Yeah and if they are smart with their first deal they don't have to make millions to survive. Starting out as a 25 year old with a free education and a couple million in the bank... can prolly make 6 figures dicking around with coaching and camps and **** if you really want to stay around the game.
