2023 NBA Draft Megathread

Yep, jjj better shot blocker and hendricks better three point shooter. Both good shooters and shot blockers though. Same strengths
But also, JJJ is a big and Hendricks is a forward. I’m not offended by the idea of Hendricks being something like the JJJ of forwards in that he will block a lot of shots for his position(s) but he will not have the luxury of being camped at the rim so much.

Russillo gave like 20 seconds on Hawkins last night. And he sounds like a truly special shot maker. Would be shocked if he's not a productive NBA player.
I'm probably in the minority, but I wouldn't have an issue taking him at 9. Sure, I'd prefer to take him at 16, but I really don't see how he won't be a productive player.

How many did it as freshmen?

Okay... so are they similar in your mind?
I think Hendricks is definitely a better athlete, but they have nearly the exact same measurements and weight. I dont think they are all that far off.

I think the athleticism difference is enough for Hendricks to be a long-term NBA player, but I dont see his skills being a for sure translation.

I think the Detroit trade is conditional on Hendricks getting a to 9.
Could be... but... what if we want Black... and they take him and then Hendricks is gone... we'd have to both like Ausar.

How many averaged more than 15 points per game and 7 rebounds. How many were one and done. How many are the same size. How many were lottery picks. Needs more narrowing down imo.

I believe Lydon is several magnitudes worse as an athlete and also had work ethic issues. I don't see them as all that similar.

when you look at who did it as freshman i don't think you're making the point you think you're making. Miles Bridges, Chet Holmgren, Jaren Jackson, Bol Bol. Chet was the #2 overall pick, Miles Bridges was becoming a very good nba player before (possible all star trajectory) he went stupid, JJJ is an all-star and Bol Bol is a good rotation player in the league having overcome serious injury and outplayed his draft position, and is still only 23.

I think when you do that it narrows it down to Chet and JJJ. Actually not the 15 PPG part.

Lydon also did it as a Freshman. I don't think freshman/sophomore differentiation is all that important in my eyes because I dont view Hendricks as having much upside.

Never understood the JJJ comparison with Hendricks, they are so different. JJJ is so much bigger and on a completely different level as a shot blocker. Hendricks is fine and really impressive for a wing….JJJ is the best in the amongst all players. It would be kinda like comparing Hendricks to Curry because Hendricks is a good shooter. Just totally different levels.

Offensively, JJJ is a beast around the basket with great size, athleticism, and touch. I don’t think Hendricks can act as an interior big in the half court well….but his strength is shooting and that’s JJJ’s biggest question mark on offense.

Comparisons are never perfect, but what are we doing here? lol.

You can add as many qualifiers as you want to make it perfect for Hendricks to come out on top, or you could say filter it so you only count mid-majors and it's suddenly a list of players who never made it in the NBA.

I think the criteria I chose was pretty fair to get a list of bigs/wings who blocked shots and shot 3's at a decent level in college. I could have lowered the 3pt% (and probably should have) to get a wider list as 38% is very high.

i agree that jjj isn't a good comparison for hendricks. hendricks will block some shots in the nba, but he'll never be a shot blocker - more similar to lauri who gets some blocks, can protect the rim at times, but at .6 bpg will never be confused with a shot blocker. and that brings us back to the better high side comparison for hendricks - lauri markkanen.
