2023 NBA Free Agency Thread

Feel bad for all these teams who have cap-space in one of the worst free agent classes in recent memory.
Yep. Im not too sad about us losing so much cap space. Plus we have so many expirings that we will get a bunch back real soon. I dont know how next years free agency list looks but we will be set up to be players if we choose to be.

All the FVV haters are nuts. He'd be great for us.
After John Stockton who was an all time great, what team has worked out employing a small *** pg or guard line? The jazz have failed in the playoffs directly because of this. I want to build a team designed for the playoffs to go deep in the playoffs. We have a defensive juggernaut, potentially of a front court. I want to do the same with the guard line. Say no to small *** pg’s. We already have one in Sexton, but if he’s coming off the bench that’s fine. This team is one move or draft pick away from accomplishing this goal of having a complete two-way team. FVV Would ruin that.

FVV is a great defender. We aren’t a championship team… with or without FVV… get talent when you can. Literally FVV and Kyle Lowry won a damn title together. Don’t be an… idiot.

From Kelly Iko who is the Rockets beat writer from The Athletic:

Full deal is:

Jordan Clarkson for KJ Martin, TyTy Washington, and a 2025 2nd round pick

Jazz add about 10M in cap space.
I think that looks like a pretty good deal. But admittedly I know little about the 2 dudes we would be getting. Seems like I have heard good things about Martin

I would actually be more interested in TyTy I think. It also opens up room to get a decent FA.

I like Martin a lot, but I dont see how he fits the current team all that well and he's a UFA after this season.

TyTy has some decent G-League stats, but the general sentiment from people who watch him more than I do is that he probably isnt anything more than a backup guard at best.

So I'd rather just keep Clarkson unless there is some masterplan I'm unaware of with the cap-space.

It opens up enough room to go after Reaves.

Add this to the @andylarsen idea of throwing the offer sheet at Reaves in the moratorium period before completing the Collins trade, and IF LA does NOT match then you know where to get the cap space.

Or maybe just do the deal. IDK. keeping Clarkson around for 3 more years on a bargain contract is pretty damn appealing.

FVV is a good defender relative for a 6' guard. He is not a good overall defender.
Nonsense… he’s a good overall defender and this the exact type of BS you’d call out when people would talk about Conley being bad on defenses. Small guard does not mean bad defense.

If we are targeting 24 - 28 year olds, here is a list of players interesting to me that are at least rumored out there to be available or that are FA. Trades or FA options for difference making 24 - 28 year olds as food for thought.

Dejounte Murray
Cam Johnson
Luke Doncic (the real prize potentially next year)
De'Andre Hunter
Ayo Dosunmo
Darius Garland (doubt it)
Grant Williams
O.G. Anuboby
Bruce Brown
Dillon Brooks
Max Stuss
Jae'sean Tate (could we steal him from the rockets in their free agency dealing)
Josh Hart
Caleb Martin (depends on what Heat do with big names
Alex Caruso (doubt he is available)
Pascal Siakam (doubt it)
Yutaka Watanabe

Sure, he can be good in the regular season and a positive, but it's not playoff defense.

The Jazz arent building a team with midgets. They are going for a more versatile defense that can play multiple styles. Sexton being on the team is fine, but they arent going to want to stack small guards.
