What's new

KO

He's been picking up a bit on the energy side- he went through a stretch where it wasn't just matador defense, he wasn't blocking out and letting the other team get contestable rebounds. Zero energy.

His facilitating prowess isn't enough to overcome being such a huge negative on the defensive end. But lately he's been putting some zest in on the defensive side and really keeping the offense humming on that side and made himself a plus player overall.

Hope he continues his current run and finds the energy to compete on both ends.
His defense has been the same all season.

He does a lot of great things on D, but yeah, he can't make multiple defensive actions in one possession. His lowlights on D are loud.

By DBPM he's our best defender this season, just ahead of Walker.

Actually playing Olynyk WITH Kessler makes Olynyk playable. Otherwise it is a straight layup line for the other team.
Olynyk is playable with anyone on the court. Walker needs Kelly more than Kelly needs Walker.

when it comes to playing quality, full-spectrum basketball:
Olynyk >>>>>> Bogdanovic

and these players were swapped

If I were running the team, I'd already have done everything reasonable to extend him. I'd have gone up to 5-10% beyond "reasonable", too. But if that process was fruitless, then I'd trade him by the deadline for the best offer.

FWIW KO is a minus 35 for the season so far. That's 10th on the team.

Kessler is 8th on the team with a minus 12 for comparison

Jokic won a championship plus two MVPs averaging less than one block per game. Playmaking centers like Jokic, Sabinis, Sengun or KO don't have to pair with a rim protecting big to be effective. Just pair him with a bunch of lengthy forwards who can rebound and patrol around the paint.

You shouldn't extend him before the trade deadline because it would take him off the table. I think if he is still around an extension comes after the trade deadline.

Ya if KO puts up triple doubles nearly every game then that would be awesome.
With zero triple doubles the comparison to jokic falls a bit flat.

If jokic was only able to put up numbers similar to KO on offense then the lack of defense would stand out more. Jokic can overcome the lack of defense with best in the entire league type of offense.

It's not worth a lot.
Just saying, if he is so great and makes everyone better then you would think the team would perform better with him on the court. Instead the opposite is true.

Centers who can handle the ball and function like PGs are becoming more and more popular thanks to the rise of Jokic. Even though KO is nowhere near as good, he would've gotten paid much more had he came out just a few years later.

I get that. My point is that if I were running things, he probably wouldn't be on-the-table. I'd want him on the team to help teach everybody else how to play basketball.

You should check out Hansen Yang. 18 year old Chinese Jokic who is dominating over in the CBA who could enter the draft this season.

Actually Jokic has had a defensive box plus minus of over 4(which leads the league) for three straight seasons. Yes, Jokic is in a different world on offense. But for him to win 2 straight MVPs PLUS a championship, it's not a matter of his offense compensating for his defense, but Denver's perfect management of scheme/personnel that covers his defensive shortcomings to a level we've never seen before.

Just watch Houston copying Denver’s scheme with Sengun this season, the deployment of versatile forwards like Jabari Parker/Tate/Eason help skyrocketed Sengun’s defensive box plus minus from 0 to 2.5.
