I'm not a CBA well educated dude, but for what I'm reading, if LM's contract is not extended by the Jazz, the team trading for him will be limited in the money they can offer to him when he becomes a FA after next season.
If that's the case, and If multiple significant offers actually are on the table, I expect the Jazz to extend Markkanen contract and trade him after tomorrow.

If we don’t trade Lauri here is what I’d do.

Jazz have 37.7M worth of cap space currently.

Trade Clarkson to the Lakers for Rui, Vincent, multiple seconds and protections off of the 2027 first.

We gain 13.9M worth of salary in this deal so 23.8M left.

Take Westbrook back with a second or two attached and waive/buyout him in the Dunn sign-and-trade.

That would leave us with about 20M left worth of salary.

Give the rest/majority of that to Lauri in a R&E.

No, they’re limited in what they can give him this year but if he hits UFA they can give him the max.

Oh, Donovan? you mean the guy who we traded away for a ton of random stuff, which kick started the tank? again, i hate this.
Doesn't change that it was fun watching the dude we drafted break out and into a star in the nba

Extending guarantees another wasted year in Utah without any say of his future unless he becomes a diva à la Harden, which he won't. He's not young any more, and his prime years can be over very soon.

I couldn't care less how many hundreds of millions he will make during his career, he and his family are set for life and he knows it, it's purely down to basketball now. Writing an extension gives Ainge full authority to do whatever he wants to do with him, if he wants to sell his soul for money and be remembered as another one of Ainge's chess pieces, go ahead.
So you think he should wait until free agency, get less money, and go to a bad team.
Rather than take more money with the jazz and get traded to a good team.

Odd

Funny thing is that i would rather watch a bunch of try hard guys who want to be here dive as deep into the playoffs as they can than watch a few superstars who came because their team traded them here, who will leave as soon as their contract is up but might get a championship in the mean time.

Good thing we aren't trading for superstars and are instead drafting a bunch of try hard guys then.
