What's new

Another religious topic......

What's your view or are you just trying to create trouble? This has been discussed hundreds of times on this board. Carry on troll....

I'm not trolling at all. Its just an honest question, I have read many threads on religious topics here and I was just reading about this tonight and i was curious to what people thought about it. Personally I think its blatantly racist but I wanted to see how members cope with it.

How do you feel about being American knowing that slavery and racism is in your past as an American?

Why does it matter to you if it's not your view? I guess I just don't get some people. I am a convert to the LDS church and believe it saved my life and has made me a better person. Do I get every decision and view, no, but then again you can view any religion in a negative matter.

I guess not growing up with any faith in my life, being bi-racial, I just view things differently.

I could care less what others believe in, the color of their skin, or where they stand politically. If you are a good person that is all that matters to me. We all screw up and there are bad people in all areas.

Sorry but this type of post or conversation just bugs me. If you disagree then that's your opinion and just have it be that.

I don't understand why you are getting so defensive about this but I completely agree with you about being a good person and that being all that matters. That is all that matters with this existence. Racism in our American history is a very disappointing, I have no idea how that could ever be seen as a good idea or anywhere near a moral decision. Have you never been curious to what other people think? How do you think we form views? We talk among each other and share opinions. This is a very valid question.

Do you believe in the Bible?

Just for the record, there were a few black priesthood holders in the LDS church while Joseph Smith was alive.

As an active member my view is it was all Brigham Youngs doing. There is not one quote or hint from Joseph about them not being able to receive it. As you point out they were even ordained. I also think there was a black quarom of the seventy back then too.

Now this is an interesting topic. So do you think it was Brigham Youngs doing as a prophet of God or Brigham Youngs doing as a man?

Brigham Young seemed to be somewhat racist, and I imagine his personal feelings had a lot to do with it. Prophets are men and not perfect. The history of the Church is not perfect. You can get caught up in old history, but I think the better use of time is spent looking at the current church teachings. Sometimes I think members of the Church can get a little too caught up in the "it's God's church and therefore everything about it is perfect" philosophy. Any endeavor involving humans will have a few failings.

I'm with you Cope. We should never, ever question a thing. Questions just get in the way of living. We should all bury our collective heads in the sand. Come on, I'll get the shovel. Everybody follow me (no theological pun intended).

I read recently that Pres. MacKay previously said that the priesthood ban was policy, not doctrine, and that the church would be changed at some point.
