Despite the fact that he screwed up what should’ve been a wide-open slam dunk on a breakaway, and air Bald a finger roll right at the hoop. He actually knows how to run a damn team something we haven’t seen since Mike Conley was here. It was refreshing to see a point guard. Any guard drive with the Solen tent to pass open a big kick out to a three-point shooter , And that backwards bounce pass on the drive was freaking insane. If he can just get a jumpshot, he could be pretty damn good in this league. Thoughts?
 
And he plays solid defense. I was esthetic when we drafted him and feel he has a chip on his shoulder; I wouldn't mind pairing him with a tall SG like Bailey. Hopefully Hendricks recovers fully as we could piece together a good defensive starting-5.
 
For me, it all depends on his ability to hit a jumper. If he does that, I think he will be part of the future, if not he will be a project. Maybe a little like Kris Dunn. Once he (KD) developed his ability to hit an open 3, he was an asset. I hope Collier doesn't take as long to get there.

Yes, he is: he is currently playing in the NBA at the point guard position. Is he a good point guard? - No.

In a couple of years Isaiah may (or may not) reach the level and impact of someone like Chris Dunn, a career backup.
 
I like Collier because of his potential. Good playmakers are so hard to find. Hope we're patient with him.

But what makes you think he is a good playmaker? He turns the ball quite a bit, frequently dribbles into the traps under the basket, his passes often lack precision and definitely lack creativity.... Since the Jazz did not have a good PG for a while the bar has been lowered a lot but in reality Collier is pretty mid as a playmaker by the NBA standards even for a rookie. And, in addition to that he has no above-the-basket game and no 3-point ability.

The only above-the-average skill that Collier has is his strong drive to the basket and that is not really a PG-specific skill: it is much more important for SFs like Lebron or Lauri.

I think he does pretty well with playmaking for a rookie. And read my post again. The word "potential" in it. And yeah, rookies play like rookies.

There are two types of starting PGs: the high scoring ones (the majority of PGs right now) and the floor generals. Collier has very few tools to become a high-scoring PG: he has no jump shot and he can't play above the basket. To have potential as a starting-level PG he should show the flashes of superior floor general skillset: think Chris Paul, Tyrese Haliburton, Trae Young, Cade Cunningham, LaMelo Ball... All of them flashed the passing/playmaking skillset in their rookie years far above of what Collier currently has. In fact, the point guard is the deepest position in the NBA right now: there are about 15 All-Star level PGs right now and more star PG prospects (Demin, Traore, Jakucionis) are knocking on the door in the next draft.

Again, he is not a bad player as a PG but his potential rather points to a solid backup role in his future (unless you anticipate his explosive growth in several areas). And backup point guards are cheap and easy to find as Chris Dunn undoubtedly knows.

Well, you could be right of course. Predicting 4 to 5 years ahead is hard though.
 
You idiots do realize he’s a one and done rookie, right?, and rookie pg’s generally take longer to progress and learn their prospective position in the NBA.

Idiot He can't shoot, it doesn't matter what he learns and how he progresses if he can't shoot. Most likely best case is he's a good career backup
 
There were good point guards who could not shoot . They compensated that by having some other elite skill: Westbrook was super fast and soared above the basket, Rubio was an amazing passer, Rondo was a defensive demon and, again, an amazing passer. What is Collier's elite skill that will offset his lack of hops and bad shooting?
