Also, at issue is whether he threw the ball "into the crowd", not "out of bounds".
Yes, this is splitting hairs. That is what refs are supposed to be able to do, make proper judgements.

He threw the ball pretty damn hard in the direction of other people. He deserved the Tech. I don't think he deserved to be thrown out. But I can see the ref's point of view. More troubling to me is that Dirk did not get a tech for swatting the ball out of his hands.
It did not look that hard to me. It was an underhand toss, that only landed on a camera man sitting on the baseline, not up in the stands.
I agree with the tech. Even the ejection I can understand, if they want to say the the cameramen are part of the crowd.
I just think the description of the incident has been exaggerated.

You seem to be misunderstanding the concept of perception and judgement.
It was a judgement call and he is made a valid judgement based on his perception.
You are saying it was not a hard throw. Yet it flew across the court on a line with little to no arch on it. It takes power to throw the ball like that and his opinion was it was too hard. I can see that. His judgement was fine. It's basically an opinion. Your opinion differs from him. That does not mean his opinion is wrong.
Attacking him like this is almost the same thing you are accusing him of doing. Comes off as a bit hippocritical.
Without looking at the video, by your memory, how far did the ball travel airborne, and how much arc was there?
ha, okay, I give up, he tossed it, with some force, underhand, across half the court, harder than soft, but not "firing" , it was not in a line, there was some arc to it, even though it did not even go into the stands, just near some guy sitting on the floor on the baseline. I guess he wasn't a cameraman, maybe someone associated with the Mavs team, which is why they made a fuss.

Did it stay on the court? Was it thrown hard? Seems to me both statements are true from his point of view.
Well Rick Carisle, the Mavs coach, kicked the ball into the stands and actually hit a fan. I will watch to see if he gets a $25,000 fine. I think Favors deserved the technical but I don't think he should have been throw out because he didn't throw it directly at anyone.
When did NBA refs start explaining calls on TV? I would like a public explanation from Dick Bavetta on why he took 5 pts off the score board in 1998 game six? or how about why the NBA refs didn't call goal-tending on Scottie Pippen in 97 when he clearly put his hand in the net to "block" Shannon Anderson layup. Yea, I know I am talking about the past but whenever I see the league or a ref explain a call I just want to scream. They only do it when they think they are right.

That is one thing that really bugs me about the NBA. There is never any word from the league saying the refs were wrong or made the wrong call. The NFL does that all the time. A little more transparency from the league about the refs would probably go a long way with the fans.
