Following Potential 2025 Draftees

The ace up somebody’s sleeve in this draft is taking Danny Wolf. I’m not done saying this. If we’re not top-5, he is an easy pick.

The dude who saw it plain as day and told y’all with Franz Wagner is telling you to believe your eyes with Wolf. It doesn’t matter that we already have Lauri, Walker, Flip, or whoever. He’s going to force his way onto the court somewhere, sometime, and people are going to be so puzzled they didn’t believe what they saw earlier.

Unless VJ has an amazing pre-draft process, I don't think teams will take him in the top 3. They'll take Coop, Dylan and Ace ahead of him. I think VJ will primarily be seen as an off-ball 2-guard. He's not advanced enough yet to play on the ball full time. If you watch Baylor games, they're initiating through Robert Wright and letting him create off the dribble, play after play. If VJ had a more advanced handle, burst and change of direction, he could beat defenders consistently. But until that happens, he still mostly relies on other guys to set him up.

I also do think he's going to measure out on the smaller side. I'd be very curious to know where the Jazz have VJ vis a vis Kasparas.

Size concerns fall on deaf ears for me considering that we are way better off with to him on defense than his counterparts (Kas or Tre). Like at what point do we care more about basketball ability versus the ability to write a taller height on a piece of paper.

Issue is Wolf can't guard the perimeter

Oladipo a pretty obvious comp

Super fair. I think the median outcome for VJ is a hypothetical who never broke out and stayed at a similar level to his ORL/OKC days....but he has the potential to breakout and be more like Oladipo.

If we can imagine Cody Williams to be SGA, I think we can image VJ developing enough ball handling to be a PG in some outcomes as well. I think his passing is actually quite good, but his handle is definitely weak for a primary ball handler. I wish he didn't go to Baylor where there is a logjam of ball handlers/chuckers.

And I don't think he has the wiggle of a guy like Vic but dude looks like a shrunk down Jimmy but flys like Wade. He may end up being something more along the lines of young healthy Gary Harris but I think there is a ton of upside there.

The first time I tuned into a Baylor game I was like "**** me... Roach is on this team... how this guy still ruining my college bb watching experience."

He's gonna be a tank that can fly tho. JC and Ellis are terrible comparables.

In terms of purely physical comps (what I was referring to), JC and Ellis are a match. Oladipo has 30 lbs and quite a bit of power compared to Edgecombe. I guess we'll have to wait and see what Edgecombe looks like at the Combine, but he doesn't have the mass of guys like Donovan Mitchell, Victor Oladipo or Anthony Edwards--guys people seem to want to compare VJ to.

When I’ve watched them it’s often 3-4 guards out there (all of whom like to dribble/shoot) and their big guy who is good but also the lowest IQ player I’ve seen who also likes to chuck. A whole lot of your turn, my turn thing going on.

Not saying he’s being held back to a big extreme, but he’s definitely in one of those funky college situations.

Out of Kas/Tre/VJ….i wouldn’t bet on him being the best primary ball handler/scorer, but I still think he has good potential there and I won’t let his height deter me from the fact that he is by far the best athlete/physical presence of the 3. Height+length =\= defense.

So Malik Monk body, Oladipo game

Here is how I would rank the defense of the top 6 draft prospects:

Flagg - Very good, but not quite as amazing as described pre-season

Bailey - Length and Athleticism and Effort
Edgecombe - A strength for sure, but not amazing

Harper - Mostly acceptable with some highs and lows

Kas - Needs improvement, but wouldn't stop me from drafting him

Tre - Concerning, but maybe he just needs better coaching?

I mean you are comparing VJ's current weight as a 19 yo to Victor's weight as a 21 yo... VJ's frame looks very capable of adding 15-20 lbs of good weight by then.

When I look at VJ I don't think of a wiry guy like JC or Ellis. We will see at the combine but I would be he looks more similar to Vic/Donny than Ellis/JC

I think that more importantly, VJ has a different kind of motor. As frail as he was, I bet that Ellis could have been a great defender had he put as much effort into defense/hustle as he did getting buckets. Yes the physical attributes matter, but it's also a mentality thing. Mitchell is built like a truck, but we've seen him both be great on defense and also horrific depending on his attitude. I do think that VJ plays the right way.

Yeah. It never hurts to be a super athlete in the league, but the main thing I've always liked about Edgecombe is that he seems to play without ego. At the same time, though, he looks like a kid who won't get rattled under the bright lights at all. Never too high, never too low. Confident but not cocky. That's a good starting point for an NBA career.

You never see him throwing tantrums, barking at the refs or hanging his head. Just goes about his business.

Yeah I think Ellis and JC are "hollow" on defense. I doubt anyone will be trucking VJ. He just looks like he could fill out similar to those guys who are more stout. And yes. You can have wingspan physique and athleticism... and still be *** on defense... see Bamba, Mo.

I can already sense VJ becoming a shrinkflation prospect....the measurables obviously matter, but actual ability matters more. Reminds me of when everyone was freaking out about just how tiny Cason Wallace is....that guy was a straight up dog, but instead we're agonizing over him being 0.5 inches shorter than X and was shrinking by the day.

The two guys VJ is likely going to be compared to the most this draft cycle are Kas and Tre. I like both those guys, but at the same time I'm not going to obsesses over the fact that they're taller than VJ when I trust VJ in every single defensive situation more. VJ may very well end up behind those guys on my final board, but it won't be because I deluded myself into think the other two are better defenders because of their size.
