All Star Weekend from San Francisco: Rising Stars, 3-point Contest, Dunk Contest, All Star Game

The Allstar game appears almost irretrievably broken. Despite almost universal acknowledgement that the game sucks, it's hard to note any discernible evidence that the players care. I'm guessing many of them wish it would go away so they could spend a few extra days in Cabo. It's hard to imagine what would incentivize these guys to go out and risk the 45-50 million plus yearly salaries they stand to lose by incurring a serious injury in a meaningless game. Playing for pride is one thing, but playing for $50 million a year is something quite different. Who can blame them? How many of us would risk that kind of money?

I might be missing something. Is there's some other reason today's players are fine with turning the Allstar game into a mockery.

What legitimate options exist to alter the prevailing incentive system?

Alternatively, am I (or are we) engaging in false nostalgia about the Allstar game in days of yore?

Why was Tatum on the OG team? He's 26.
The teams were not perfect and the draft was pretty half assed. The weekend was a lot of finger pointing by the crew, but I'm amazed at how little preparation and effort the crew makes besides Ernie and maybe Kenny.

Also he's 26 but feels like we've been seeing him on finals and late playoff runs for ~7 years. Someone like Brunson is older but perhaps feels like a "younger star" in how long he's been on the map.

And/or one on one.

Here’s an idea: if there’s overtime, have one-on-one to determine the game like a shootout in Hockey/soccer (I don’t know what I’m talking about).
King of The Hill is 1 v 1, it's just with a rotating group.

Basically you have 5 players (or any #). If you score you get a point and stay on, if you get scored on you get off. First to a certain score wins.

All star weekend is just one part of a league that has lost it's luster as a whole. The problem is that the money keeps coming in and increasing for both the teams and the players, for them everything is going great. The amount of money they make is not tied to how entertaining the league is or even the amount of people watching.

Whatever they try to do next year, ban Kevin Hart and ban mentions of Bol Bol. I swear they talked about Bol Bol for 10 minutes straight, which is ridiculous because we only got about 30 minutes of basketball in 3 hours.

Go back to basics.

East vs West

Winning conference gets homecourt advantage in the Finals.

The game is made mostly of stars from winning teams, so that should give the game value.
Probably this. Overall just simplify... they are doing way too much. Also, don't have guys that **** on the game and other players full time drive the conversation lol. They have some talented guys who are funny but also won't dump on the players full time like Richard Jefferson maybe. Candace Parker is awesome. Tone down the Draymond/Shaq types if they are using the stage for their platform to make themselves better than everything else.

Still wild to me how Shaq became so universally loved when he's so miserable

I think there is a big demo that likes Sophomoric poop humor... and he appeals to them is my guess.

The NBA has an obsession with putting people who hate on the game on TV. Even Kevin Hart (does anyone even like him?) spent five minutes complaining about how bad the NBA is. Would it kill them to give some screen time to someone who isn’t constantly ripping their product?

If you constantly tell the people what they’re watching sucks, they’re going to believe it.

To build on this have the first 3 quarters only determine who gets the ball to start the 4th quarter and then start the 4th quarter over with an Elon ending.

Having star players get injured in the all star game in the middle of the season is worse than what we have now. If they only have one quarter of competitive basketball that could be a good balance. Let them do tomahawk dunks and half court 3s in the first 3 quarters, and have a real game for the 4th.

Also, no commercials or timeouts during the 4th quarter. Just 12 minutes of the best playing against the best competitively.
