Post Moves 101 for Kanter and Favors (Shaq & Barkley)

Surprisingly consistent advice from three greats (mainly for Blake Griffin): Barkley, Shaq, and the Dream (via Kenny Smith). The focus on the middle is interesting since Kanter very rarely goes to the middle and goes too slowly. You would think Kanter would not be that far away if he could master the move to the middle and then passing out.

Kanter's go to move so far is the up and under. He needs to start just going up though to sell that move though.

Kanter already has that drop step Shaq was referring to - he just needs to develop that hook shot. That's all he needs - 2 moves - as Shaq said.

Kanter's problem is where he posts up. Many times he is too low in the block so when he spins he is underneath the basket. The Jazz should show Favors and Kanter this video and have them practice these moves. I think that if Kanter could develop a jump hook and move up in the block he would be tough to defend. Throw in a nice 10 ft shot then he could be a force. I think this summer this is what Kanter needs to work on.

He also doesn't do a good job of sealing his man on his baseline spin, which is partly due to posting too deep. He has quick feet, but he has to get a little lower and drive back on his spin. The little euro hook shot (a la Marc Gasol and Nikola Pekovic) should be what he works on when he goes middle.

Big Al had a really nice post spin on Duncan. I wish he was able to do moves like that more often rather than the hook shot.

He also overuses the up and under, so I think most smart defenders knows it's coming. He gets some of the shot blockers in the air, but the smarter players don't bite on it. He needs to actually go up strong and quick so he can sell the up and under.

Kanter flashed a righty hook shot a lot more earlier in the year. It didn't go in a lot and I think he just lost confidence in it. The up and under he's obviously picked up from Al is going to be a nice weapon for him. For a 19 year old, I think he's way ahead of the curve. But that doesn't mean I want to see a lot of him on the court this series.

It's ridiculous to think he hasn't learned a ton from Al. He barely ever tried that move early in the season. Now it's practically his go to move.

And it's the same move. I'm not saying he hasn't learned anything from Al, but I disagree with this apparent narrative that Al is making Kanter into this new player. Favors maybe, but not Kanter.

Hell, if we want to make an anecdote about Kanter's tutelage under Al, you could say he's gotten worse. I wouldn't really promote that, but I don't see how the kid has improved down the stretch as much as that pains me to say.

No player is totally responsible for another player's development. But it's more than a coincidence that Kanter is suddenly showing great confidence in the up and under which is Al's signature move. If you asked Kanter, I'm sure he'd tell you he's learning a ton from Al about footwork and how to get his shot off.
