What's new

Welcome back to Salt Lake - Mo Williams

I'm sure he could have got the mid-level (if that still exists) deal in the 5-6M/yr range for 4 or 5 years. But he could probably still get that next year or even more plus the 8.5 this year.

Yeah - have the cake and eat it too.

KOC has done it again - Mo will use next year as his audition for a final huge contract to retire on.

Does LA still have a TPE that could be used to take Harris?
Sarcasm? Or do people really devalue or dislike Harris that much? Even pretending he was completely worthless why would you voluntarily help the Fakers by giving them anything?

Another TPE would be a nice chip with Dwight Howard likely on the move

I'm not really understanding this deal if all we get is Mo.

8.5 mil is a TON to pay for a backup PG. Even if he can play some SG. And the Jazz have been kinda thrifty lately. (Harpring, Okur, etc...) So, it surprises me a bit that they'd take on a guy like Mo for such a large chunk of change. I mean think about it. They could just as easily NOT paid Mo 8.5 million and gone with a very cheap Tinsley instead. And since I don't believe we'll be challenging for a title this year, I think that would have been understandable.

So, I would think that if you are going to unnecessarily shell out 8.5 million, and you are not going to challenge for a title this year, you'd want some assets moving forward. Young guys or draft picks. Preferably draft picks.

There are several ways this might make some sense though.

- Jazz have a trade in place for Harris. 8.5 mil isn't bad for your starting PG. It's a lil pricey, but, not bad. So, if the Jazz trade Harris, this move suddenly makes some sense.
- Jazz plan on starting Mo at the 2. This would also make some sense because 8.5 mil isn't terrible for your starting 2. This makes some sense because the Jazz have a pretty strong history of running a 2 PG set. Would help with our outside shooting and probably help our perimeter defense.
- Jazz are getting something extra in the deal that hasn't come out yet. Maybe some cash. Maybe a 2nd. Maybe someone is taking Bell for a TPE. I dunno.

If none of those things are the case the Jazz just spent 8.5 million dollars to win one or two more games this year. A very un-Jazz like thing to do. And nobody around here should be able to keep calling the Jazz cheap if this is the plan.

I have a slight suspicion that this year is effectively a 'test run'.

If this year worked out - may be KOC might look to sign him up on a longer term deal - may be using our mid level on say a 3-4 year deal? There's no potential PG on the horizon and Harris just doesn't fit our system. Williams just fits better as he's a pretty reliable shooter. We can trade for a legit starting PG but we'd have to give up something. This way we can lock up a shooting PG which KOC always liked, not giving up a lot to take him, and still have our young core in tact.

I definitely think this is part of a 'grand plan'.

Do you know the definition of "thrifty"?

so, we get a solid outside shooter that is an average passer at best and a combo guard as well. decent trade, but we slightly overpay for him without getting a pick or a player in addition. we could have done better. at least he will add some outside shooting which we desperately needed...

i'm not sure we necessarily "could have done better" with the TPE, but we should have gotten something for helping dallas dump salary and helping LAC get their guy.

as for the "could have done better" part, just not sure anybody else in that salary range is measurably better than mo and yet still someone who his team was willing to essentially give away.

I recall it was Devin Harris who played some SG last year with Watson at PG. Harris IS a good defender and when his shooting is ON, a good SG. I would not be surprised to see more of that, but with *Mo Williams* at PG...

yeah but devin isn't a catch-and-shoot guy at all, and mo is much less effective at creating for others. if those two are on the floor together, you want harris handling and driving, and you want to run mo off screens or put him on the three point line.

the reason devin played 2 in devin/earl lineups is because earl can't shoot the basketball at all.

Don't trade Devin, Williams and Harris have intense rivalry that boost each others play, giving us some really good PG play.

Don't trade Devin, Williams gets the starting job and Harris goes back to being a deflated inner-tube of a basketball player.

Trade Devin and get crappy players back.

Hopefully the 1st one happens.
