Are we onto something here with Evans? (Ibaka Lite?)

The Midnight

Watching the final summer league game where Evans was all over the place, jumping, altering, blocking shots.

- He has that quick jumping ability
- He has the length
- He has that wing span
- He seems to be bulking up nicely
- His shot (both FT and FG) seems to be coming along slowly
- He seems to start to 'get' the game (i.e., building on his strengths of dunking, blocking and branching out into a more complete player).

Dare I say Ibaka-Lite in a couple of years?

If he can bulk up a bit and hone in on that defensive/blocking ability - may be he could be a surprisingly valuable player for us.

Thoughts?

if he could put on some weight and keep that jumping ability we would be set when we trade Big Al/Sap. That would leave us with Favors, Kanter, Evans and either Sap/Big Al. That would be ideal for me.

No, I certainly do not think so. He is a PF in a SF body with really no SF skills. He has one talent, awesome hops. Beyond that, nothing.

If he could put on some wieght and keep his "hops" than I like him as a back up PF. Can dunk, block shots, alter peoples shots...

well.. way to put a downer on things man - have faith bro!

He already looks a lot 'bigger' to me - wouldn't be surprised if he'd put on some weight as well as height wise as well. Anyway if we're looking at his shot blocking ability - he certainly has the 'reach' and the jumping ability to do that.

Like Stoked said - he just needs to bulk up so that he can hold his ground against other team's PF. That's not something that's impossible to do IMO.

Just needs to bulk up? He is 24 years old, he is going to be bulking up anytime soon unless you make him quit basketball for a year. Any weight he gains in the off-season will just be lost in the regular season.

As someone who struggles to add on wieght I can assure you that it is harder for some people than it sounds.

May be send him to live with Sumos in Japan for a year.

Then, with all the added weight, his main skill will be lost. His skill isn't jumping high, it's how quickly he is able to jump. This is probably mostly caused by his bird like frame and weight.

Good thread, I love Evans. He is better than people around here say he is. He has rebounding and shot blocking skills, nor just dunking..

Will he be an allstar? No. But I like him at 18 min a game off the bench

I'm not saying 'turn him into a sumo'. I'm just saying - they might be able to help him add some weight.

I know Jazzfanz has this obsession with making players into players they aren't.

Burks can play PG, just put him at PG.
Kanter should be able to jump if we put him into a training program.
Evans should be able to gain weight if he workouts harder.

Players are who they are for the most part. They aren't going to go through some physical mutation or develop a entirely way of thinking about the game over the course of 1 summer.

I saw Evans make a fairly difficult fake, leading to a made jump hook yesterday...

Why he can't just elevate and make short range jumpers and hooks all day long baffles me, but they just keep focusing on getting him alley oops.
We know he's got that, time to expand his game!

I still would like to see him play more.

Exactly. Players by the time they get to the NBA, and certainly by 3rd year, are not going to change too much. They can improve and what they already do, but adding a serious new skill like Evans would need (ball handling, passing, shooting jumpers) ain't gonna happen. And if he bulked up to play PF, his hops would be destroyed and he would have even less value.

It isn't weight he needs (and I'm speaking as a fat guy, so I know from what I say). He needs to build some strength. This will also be important down the line as jumpers like Evans are always going to start having knee problems at some point that will curtail their careers. Look at Kevin Garnett. The guy could be used to clean chimneys, but he's strong and wirey like Grover.
