BYU Football 2012

If that is the main reason, then there is obviously somebody else that is emerging that he is worried about. An Alisa/Q split is about as good a situation Josh is going to find at this level. I'm guessing Adam Hine is the culprit. Dude's freaky. I don't know that he's a good running back, but dude's freaky.

Juice's comments were cryptic so just guessing but I still think it comes down to playing time.

Let's bring this baby back up:

With junior kicker Justin Sorensen yet to do any kicking through five preseason practices as he tries to battle back from back surgery last winter, the special teams spotlight has swung a bit to Stephenson.

A shaky kicking game could be quite the problem, no? Well, not too different from last year, I guess, but it would be nice to actually be good in the area again. You have feel bad for Sorensen though. Screw the college football kicker part, dude has old man back problems at the Age of 21 or 22.

Sorensen kicked a 65-yarder against us in high school. I can't remember if it is/was a record and it cleared by 10 feet. I saw another game where Sorensen tweaked his hammy and so had to 1-step his kickoffs and he was still putting them in the endzone. Also Sorensen power-cleaned 345 which is nuts. They tried to have him play other positions but he flat out sucks.

Just yesterday I was at BYU practice and watched Stephenson kicking off. Distance was great but accuracy sucked. Great punting though.

Some other observations from practice:

Bronco recently stopped practice because non-contact rules were not being followed. However, when they went to team drills it was pretty much full contact. Talking to Doman afterwards and he was very frustrated and even mentioned nearly being fired. But the HC being the DC that is going to happen.

They give too many reps to 3rd-stringers and less and not enough to starters.

Riley can't read to save his life. His ball actually looks good but he can't read. Lots of check-downs for him this year but that might work out with their good RBs. Hine (or maybe Hines) looks great. Taysom is definitely the QB they need to get ready for next year. Was surprised with how good Olsen looked. I didn't like him in high school as a QB but he has come a long way. Lark is so bad they might as well get the next guy ready anyway.

Kuresa playing WR.

Collie sucks balls.

Doman claims they are completing 70% in camp but I'm not seeing it. And lots and lots of drops.

Oline looks very trim.

Practice in general kind of dragged. I'm a big fan of the shorter periods and this looked old school. But that's mostly the offensive side. The defensive practice is pretty up-tempo.

Really? Everything I've read says his ability fits somewhere between Austin and his other brother Zac, but that he still has Austin's swagger. If sucks balls means is that he's not as good as Austin but still pretty good, and gets under opponents skin easily(Read Utah's) I'll take it. It'll be interesting to watch him develop and if they RS him this year. Hopefully he is better than your first impression of him says.

The swagger part is right but not the skills. But heck, these guys come in pretty raw anyway. I'm sure he'll develop but given the hype I expected more.

The bad thing about him is that he kind of has that whole Jake Heaps over taught thing about him. You know, where some guys are just kind of raw ability but didn't have the best coaching in the world at the high school level so they don't look as sharp....but once they get to college and get some good coaching they end passing some of these other guys that have been better trained up until that point? I think the Collie's even have a WR academy that they run or something. This dude has probably been through the works since he was a kid. So maybe he improves his strength and some other things, but you have to think he might be already near his peak this year, just like Austin was already really good his freshman year...still improved....but it's not like he took huge steps up. He was already sharp. Killing college level dbs with his route running ability the second he got to Provo.

Having a bad kicking game could be a blessing in disguise.

Now when its 4th and 2 from the 35 yardline, instead of kicking a 47 field goal maybe we will go for it on 4th down alot more and end up getting more touchdowns and less field goals.

Ummmm I was at the scrimmage Collie looked pretty good, had the best catch of the day, ran good routes. I don't think he sucks balls but whatever you think I guess

I don't get how BYU can recruit some really nice talent at some positions (like WR) and yet give scholarships away to some of thee worst players you'll ever see. Kafusi (not Bronson, Bronson's a stud) was JV player at Timpview High. He didn't even start varsity. Yet, Bronco (probably influenced by his dad) gave away a scholarship to the kid.

There are several other examples on that team. Tucker Lamb? 5 foot 9 195 lbs RB? Not even close to a DIV I athlete. So many other kids I saw play in HS who were granted, nice HS players but either too short or too slow to play Div I. It just blows my mind how BYU seems to piss away scholarships. It's like they're too damn lazy to think outside the box or take a risk on someone. Perhaps this is the result of Crowton's last year? BYU is a lil gunshy of being burned again?

So while they have elite athleticism at some positions, they have equally elite deathleticism at others.

I know Bronco loves those hard working white farmer kids. But those kids don't necessarily have the talent for Div I Football.

Compare that to Utah, who has elite athleticism across the board... Or hell, even Utah St.

Got open, didn't run banana routes, caught the ball when it came his way, he did muff that first punt though. What did he do that sucked?
The opposite. Unable to get off of press. Bad adjustment to ball. But to tell the truth everyone looked bad even Hoffman. Maybe just an off day for the offense.

I have heard from others that Collie does look good.

Keep in mind sometimes they are just trying to keep pipelines open. I'm sure a lot of schools do the same to some degree. Take on lesser talents to get to a more talented brother or teammate.

Not surprised that byu is running their football program like an MLM.
