How many players drafted #1 won a title with their original team?

Two: Tim Duncan and David Robinson.

Yikes.

Dwight Howard sucks.

In that same time frame, how many #1 picks have won a title since switching teams?

Two: Shaq and LeBron.

See, I can just as easily say that moving to a different team rarely results in a championship - if you are just cherry-picking and taking the #1 overall picks. Of course, we know how many "busts" and "good, but not great" players have been taken #1 over the years. And how many great players were taken later in their respective drafts.

Let's take it a step further: how many marquee, superstar players have signed as FA's with a small-market team (other than the team that drafted them)?

Thinking, thinking...

Yikes!

So back to Xsy - it's a good thing we don't have any #1 picks. It appears the only chance Utah has at a title is to draft a few players who turn out to be all-stars later in the lottery, and keep them as they develop. Or we can hope SLC becomes a major market in the next several years. Utah was cited as one of the best places to live, so you never know ;-)

Maybe the real lesson is that if you want to win a title, you don't want to be a #1 pick because then you'll likely get stuck on a bad team.

Did the Lakers have the #1 pick when they got Magic? I'm thinking no.

Is this an "all-time" list? If so, add Cazzie Russell, Lew Alcindor (Kareem Abdul-Jabbar), Bill Walton, Magic Johnson, James Worthy, and Hakeem Olajuwon. Other than that, your list is solid.

How many teams have won championships without having a lottery selected talent on their team? Whether they are obtained through free agency or the draft?

A better question to ask, (which I don't have the time to look up since I'm at work on a cell phone), would be how many of the past 20 championship teams got their best 2 or 3 guys through the draft vs trades or signings

you can trade for draft picks, so I'm not sure which side of the ledger to put that.

but I'd say "all of the above."
