What's JazzFanz's stance on Marriage Equality?

My core belief is focus your energy into what makes you happy and try to stop taking happiness away from other people.

I really don't buy into the "secular" argument that marriage should exist to serve the interests of children or the argument that somehow gay marriage harms children and therefore it should be banned. If that were the case couples who were sterile or simply choose not to have children should be under a lot more fire than they are but really they just get to live their life like any other married couple.

In my experience the main reason people don't think gay marriage should be allowed is for religious reasons but basing laws on religious beliefs violates the separation of church and state. In our society marriage is not purely a religious institution. If you view your personal marriage as a spiritual contract with God thats fine but that shouldn't affect the ability of an athiest couple or an an lgbt couple to go to a courthouse and engage in their personal social contract with the government. If you don't want gay marriage, I would recommend not getting one

So, what's the verdict?

Do we have a stance?

I believe in straight marriage but I also believe in equality. And above all, I believe in freedom.

So either way I think freedom wins.

Exactly. Whether or not you personally believe God views something as okay--and even if you're right--has absolutely NOTHING to do with the criteria for which state laws are based. Laws prohibiting specific actions are put in place because they can be reasonably said to harm others around them, not because certain religious groups think they are "wrong".

There is no such thing as "separation of church and state" but if there was voting based on religious convictions wouldn't violate that. Sorry.

Pearl, please make like your husband, and choke on a pretzel.

Thanks.
