Official David Locke Apology Thread

I've noticed that too many of us like to hate on David Locke. After a year of listening to him call games and his tip off's on Locked on Jazz I don't really understand this. To be honest, the guy knows more about basketball than like 97 percent of us here on Jazzfanz (and even that might be a stretch; it might even be more like 99.8 percent). Sorry Locke haters, but that is just reality... ;)

Yep.

Nope

Dude is a moron. And he isn't even slighty entertaining.

This should sum him up.

He was in love with Boozer and defended him at ever turn.

End of debate.

Good radio show host. Even when he is wrong he has a reason why he came to that decision. That he genuinely loves his job and give more effort into his job than most other local sports guys.

He can be annoying at times though and is a bad play by play announcer. He'd be better served as a color man or studio host.

Hack, with all due respect, you put Foye as the worst player on our team in the top 5 player thread, and so it is that I am having a hard time finding validity in this statement. Dude knows Basketball. And please, show me a link or something he said that validates he was in love with Boozer.

I used to only listen to Locke when he would have interesting guest interviews but now I've stopped because I can't stand listening to him, period.
I disagree with many of his opinions which I find ill-conceived and frankly just plain wrong.

It is what it is, some like him, some strongly dislike him - all in a days work for a talk-radio host.

He was terrible a few years ago on his basketball IQ but has improved. Remember how he watched every Jefferson play in Minnesota and thought he would work flawlessly with Deron? Nuff said.

He has a bit of selective memory some times, but he surprises me quite often with how right his is. A prime example last year was the Spurs. He predicted at the first of the year that the Spurs would absolutely dominate with their team, and he took a lot of crap from people. He was spot on. He is really great with posting stuff as well. Light years ahead of anything we would have gotten from Hot Rod besides the unparalleled and superb game calls. I don't listen to games on the radio, so I don't care about that. I'm glad I grew up with Hod Rod calling games, though.

I love what Locke does for Jazz Fans. He is doing great using social media and brings the Jazz fan something unique. He is providing us some new things that have not been possible in the past using todays technology. I love to listen to tip off every day as I take a walk after lunch. David Locke is a smart guy who at times will tread on the arrogant side, but none the less has great confidence and will go to bat for the organization. His knowledge with analytical stats is superior to other radio play by play announcers. I am grateful for having Locke in our organization and feel sorry for those who love to hate him. Sorry haters.

Locke is great at reason and statistics and analysis. That has no correlation with how often he gets it right, but the guy has a gift for coming up with cool stats and lines of logic. He has a serious lack of talent for being a color commentator imho. His emotions whether excited or bummed come across as awkward.

For me he is the anti Hot Rod. His shortcomings were HR strengths and vice versa. I think Hot Rod will be the legend and Locke will probably be remembered as the guy after.

I would quote Hot Rod like you quote movies because it was catchy/poetic. If I quote Locke play by play its to emphasize that the combination of words he just came up with were just incredibly odd.

I completely agree that Lock is not a very good play by play announcer. Hot Rod is a legend even with all his Phallic symbols over the years. I loved hearing Hot Rod call the games. I have only heard small bits here and there with Locke calling games because I watch all the games Televised. I like what Locke bring us between the games and he uses technology to do that for the fans that did not exist when Hot Rod was with us.

I personally am most-against how much he spins things, or how often he selectively picks statistics that help him try to make a point. Or how he will glorify any member of the Jazz, and razz him when the organization turns their back on him. Just give us a regular, unbiased summation of every player on this team. I don't care what the Jazz defensive rating was while Favors was on the floor; how about you go through entire clips of Favors from the Spurs playoff series, analyze every play that was run for him on offense, and analyze every play he defend a stretch 4 like Diaw or Bonner, or Duncan, or Splitter, or anyone of that nature. Feel free to critique players on the Jazz, other than massive elephants in the room (Jefferson's defense). Tell us if Mo Williams might miff our team's fast-break efficiency. How was he utilized differently in Cleveland and the Clippers, and is there a chance we might see more of a Mo Williams in his 'Bucks' form? Is he passive? Is he a poor distributor?

All in all, I respect the work that David Locke puts in (which is a serious amount), but I always get the sense that his statistical data either has a lot of noise, or he is simply grasping at major straws. Like the whole Alec Burks/Kobe thing? Jesus. How about you tell us how Michael Redd destroyed him, and how Burks is a disaster when it comes to defending veteran SGs? Tell us how we put the ball in Hayward's hands several times last season, and he ****ed the pooch regularly, relying on tip-ins from Al and Millsap several times. Tell us how Favors couldn't even get past Bonner. Tell us how Millsap disappeared in the playoffs, or in February for that matter.

And to the poster who said David Locke is always right, LOL. What did he predict our record was going to be last season again? I know it was in the 20s, and he sure as hell didn't believe we would even sniff the playoffs.

Really?

You want me to sift through hours of his garbage radio to find you link, so I can prove he was a Booze homer? I don't need to. He was, trust me.

Just listen to when he interviews Kevin O Conner. You can sense his disapproval if his knowledge. Kevin doesn't even want to be there. You can also hear Kevin O Conner rolling his eyes when Locke starts rolling out his own stats. It's painful to listen to.

That's hardly a reason to bag on a guy. So what if he was optimistic about Jefferson replacing the void left by Boozer? Even the forum members who don't want Jeff to play another game in Jazz attire will tell you that was a magician's move by KOC to bring him over.

But in Locke's defense, Jazz lost all their shooters in one swoop. That's what really pissed Deron Williams off. D-Will, Jeff, Sap, & shooters would have been a devastating offense.

I completely agree with you that he was a Booze homer. He's been a company man down the line, especially since he became the play by play guy (which he's terrible at). But he's a very good interviewer and I don't agree with you that O'Conner disapproves of him. That's all an act. Locke is self-depricating and KOC plays in to it. Locke's talk shows were almost always entertaining. I wish he'd quit the play by play and go back to that (especially if it was for a non-company station).

Two things. He tries too hard to come up with catchy sayings and he wasn't blessed with the pipes to do play by play.

This is my take as well. Love him on his talk show. As for his play by play half the time he confuses the hell out of me. And says some weird stuff. They even interviewed him on Espn because he started wigging out during his play by play. No hate from me though.
