I think sometimes the offense is being used as a scapegoat now...

That defense couldn't come close to stopping USC at anything. Running, passing, inside, outside, short, long... USC and AZ St. have done literally anything they have wanted to do on offense with little to no resistance from the Utes.

Even if that offense were more potent that defense isn't good enough to keep you in many games in the Pac-12. Especially against the run where Silas Red would get 5-10 yards per carry.

Utah's conference/scheduling situation is light years ahead of BYU's. But I'm not seeing the recruiting edge at all. Utah has some work to do this offseason.... Both offensively and defensively...

And that is EXACTLY what was happening!
 
Looking back at that game, if someone had told me that the Utes would only be down 3 going into the 4th, I take that every day. I expected them to get worked early and often and that didn't happen. Big ****ing deal. There were some plays in that game that I am still trying to figure out. Why in the **** do you send your ****ty kicker out to try a 48 yard attempt on third down with 13 seconds left in the half? I can't see any reason for it. Maybe it's because you had no timeouts, which goes straight into my second bitch: Why in the **** do you call a timeout on defense when USC has 3rd and goal and trying to get their offense set with 3 seconds left on the play clock? The Utes did them a favor by calling timeout. No way were the Trojans getting that play off, in fact, it looked like they might have called a timeout at the same time. We were confused who called it, as were the officials as one pointed toward Utah and one toward SC. Still, why call it if the offense is scrambling?

As for the Utes' struggles on defense, yeah they gave up some yardage but I thought they held up pretty well (except for the bomb). USC is an extremely talented team and the Utes stopped them a few times, obviously not enough times. It gets pretty discouraging when you're forcing a punt or a long field goal and then your offense repays you with a 3 and out, a fumble, or a pick six. I would like to see more pressure put on the QB than what they did and better tackling, but I wasn't disappointed in the overall defense.

The bottom line is that this team is nowhere near as good as we hoped it would be and there needs to be a collective look at philosophy on both sides of the ball by the coaching staff. Starting with scrapping the East-West passing scheme.
 
I don't watch a lot of football but I watched last night's Ute game. Can someone explain what issue the "Ineligible Receiver" penalty fixes? Is that something they'll catch every time and call a penalty or is it sort of like a 3sec violation in the NBA?
 
The defense was hot and cold - but I didn't think they were terrible. They could have easily given up 50+ to USC, but they stood their ground a few times and, luckily, USC's kicker isn't much better than ours.

BJ did a pretty respectable job (especially in the first half), but he needs a QB that can execute. Hays made some plays, and botched some plays. The interception was inexcusable. He had no business throwing that ball.

But I am more encouraged than I was before the game. I fully expected a beat-down of biblical proportion. But Utah made a game of it. If they can play as solidly, and tighten up some of the gaps, they can salvage a respectable season. Maybe even get into a bowl (although that looks pretty sketchy, at the moment.)

It's a rule to help the defense account for players. Only so many players are eligible to go out for passes and if you have ineligible players running routes, that causes too much confusion. Whether it's called every time is questionable but you usually see it on slow developing plays like that one.

It's "The Man's" way of keeping us fat boys down!!!
Basically, the 5 linemen are ineligible to catch a pass or run the ball (unless a pass has been tipped or a fumble). Being ineligible also means they are not allowed to cross the line of scrimmage on a pass play until the ball has. Personally, I hated seeing that call (even though the play resulted in a Ute TD) since it had ZERO bearing on the success of the play. I guess it could be "argued" that the defense saw the lineman come across the line of scrimmage and assumed it was a run and that allowed the pass to be completed, but that's pure BS. I hate seeing penalties called that have no bearing on the play.

Pretty sure he was wearing a Utes shirt too, theres a video of it on the Jazz NBA website. What a hero.
 
I'm kinda pissed that none of you mooks came and said hello while I was performing on the pirate ship during the tailgate.

That game was won and lost on the line - both offense and defense.

On the bright side, I stayed until the bitter end and was rewarded by Travis Wilson. Yes he's a frosh and made a couple of blunders, but he also had that long pass to get within the 5 that only happened because he has a great arm and has height and vision Hays doesn't have.

I'm kind of in the same space as YB. Was expecting a blowout, glad we made it competitive.
