What's new

Free Alec Burks

Last night's game was a good time to get Burks some heavy minutes. SA plays small ball both in their first and second unit, with Duncan and Splitter as their only legitimate bigs, and neither on the court at the same time. Their PFs Bonner and Diaw can stretch the floor like a guard. The Jazz were not getting much inside all night, especially the second unit with Favors and Kanter, so my question to Corbin is why play two bigs, not run any plays for them, and expect the results to be positive? This lineup seems like it would be ideal against a small ball lineup:

Jefferson/Favors
Ma Williams
Hayward
Burks
Mo Williams

You get four three point shooters, three slashers/playmakers, and overall have the footspeed necessary to fight over screens and guard the three point line very well. Millsap played well but probably could sacrifice some minutes at PF to WIlliams. Kanter realistically shouldn't have been used at all in this game.

I think that lineup would be alot of fun

Let me be on the record that if Burks has a bad attitude then I want him sitting on the bench.

In every interview I've heard with him he talks about being overlooked and that gives him motivation to be better.

I can't think of any better motivation than Tinsley playing and Burks not.

I dunno .. I might not find that motivating at all.

I could see it motivating during a rookie season, not as a soph that had a better pre-season than three players ahead of you. I would find that quite demotivating.

Burks is my favorite player on the team. He is a baller, and he knows how to get to the line. Possibly better than anyone else on the team. Does this message board have a large enough following that we could plan a chant to be started at the game, or maybe some signage... Look at the Knicks fans getting Sheed into the game. I know that wasn't planned, but hey it could be worth a shot. Just to let everyone know that the fans are unhappy.

I want a Burks jersey soooo bad, but I can't justify buying one because he is just going to ride pine till he bails on us or be package in a trade because management sees him as a valuable asset that is not even playing.

The only thing that I was excited about this year was watching the young guys develop. We are not going to win a championship with Foye/Carrol/Tinsley getting significant minutes... I'm sick of how our franchise treats lottery talent. Do you remember when we started Milt Palacio over Deron Williams? Why do we feel we need to be "hard" on the lottery talent. (Note: If Alec Burks would have been undrafted I believe he would be starting for us.)

At least I'm in the Northwest and I get to watch Damian Lillard develop. It's crazy what happens when you let players play basketball... they get better, they mess up sometimes, but you can actually be in a position to evaluate the player's talent.

I wouldn't be surprised if Alec Burks becomes a locker room "cancer" and demands a trade. We deserve it.

I just cannot get over the fact that we are stunting the growth of our youth (who are locked in for multiple years on their contracts) for a bunch of players on the last year of their contract. There is no guarantee that Foye stays here long term if he "explodes"....

Sorry for the rant, I am extremely frustrated with the team/organization.

No apology neccessary for the rant..... I agree with everything you said

I keep thinking about how crazy it is that as good as Lillard has looked in Portland, if he had been drafted by Utah he'd be buried on the bench behind veterans Williams, Foye and Tinsley. Neither Portland or Utah is going anywhere, but Portland is using this time to get it's best young players invaluable experience.

Sure seems to make sense on paper .. and in games.

Who is the other PG in Portland? I get what you are saying but Portland doesn't have anyone threataning him for pt.

This is a realistic fear.

They've got Nolan Smith and Ronnie Price. If Utah was in the same situation, Ronnie Price would be starting because he's a "vet" who knows the system....

If Price were still here, then yes, sadly, that would be the case. But Price is new in Portland so he wouldn't know their system any better than Lillard. And Nolan Smith isn't even a vet. He's in his second year.

In portlands defense Lillard is playing better right now than Burks ever has. I do want burks to get some PT though, just not sure where and how exactly, I think Foye is a better player right now but you've got to get Burks 10-15 a game at least.
