Alex Smith Watch 2010-2011

So what will the excuse be if Smith fails this season? Or will some people finally admit he's a bust? I'm not saying he's going to fail, but I'm FAR from convinced he's an NFL QB.

There's no doubt this is his make-it or break-it year. He won't get re-signed this off-season if the Niners don't at least make the playoffs and Smith doesn't show improvement. I would officially be ready to write him off as a complete bust at that point. But from what I've seen this pre-season and from reports all of training camp, he seems poised to have his best season.

Did anyone see the "expert" predictions on ESPN.com? The Niners had two votes as SB Champs which made them the 5th or 6th most likely team to win it all. Now don't get me wrong, I like the Niners a little bit (admittedly because of Alex Smith), but come on. They have no place being one of the top 5 most likely for the championship. I see them making the playoffs, but I don't even see them being a top 5 in the conference (Saints, Pack, Boys, Vikes, G-men).

If I recall correctly, I remember seeing one saying they would get to the SB and one other saying they would win the SB. Either way, both far-fetched I would agree. I would be thrilled as a Niners fan to see them make the playoffs and win a game. It's definitely too much to expect anything beyond that at this point.

You could be right. I think I just assumed that the rankings were based on Championship predictions, not just in the SB. Regardless, it's a bit much. No knock on your Niners, there are just better teams out there. Although you never know what could happen once you get into the playoffs (which I think you will). See the Cardinals two years ago.

I didn't see the game, but he certainly couldn't have done that well out there. Disappointing.

Passing CP/AT YDS TD INT
Alex Smith 26/45 225 0 2

Not exactly a stellar start.

Not that I like the Niner's but thought I'd add that the 2 INT's where both Crabtree's fault (1 bounced off his hands and the other he ran the wrong route and the ball was thrown to where he should've been) but he definitely had his chances in the first half that he missed.

So that's the excuse...it was Crabtree's fault.

No excuses that is what happened and it happens to most QB's a few times a season, I could careless about the Niner's and like I said Smith had his chances in the first half and didn't capitalize on them. After the first qtr and especially in the 2nd half (from what I saw of the game) Seattle's D shut down the Niner's and the capitalized on the aggressive/gambling Niner defense.

Well I'm here to eat my slice of humble pie. What an extremely disappointing game. All that hype, and that's the best the 49ers could do? WOW!! Alex Smith had a very poor showing. The INTs might have partly been the blame of Crabtree, but Smith is also to blame. I won't go into the stats, as they were already posted. I'm extremely disappointed, but ready to move on. It's only one game, but the 49ers better get things figured out and correct the problems real quick. Next up the 49ers host the Saints on Monday Night Football. If the same Niners team from yesterday shows up, it will be a very ugly game.

Yeah...not exactly how you wanna start your make-or-break season (for the whole team and coaches, Smith and Singletary especially). Glad I wasn't available to watch most of this. Would have been torture. The little I saw was infuriating...they should have easily been up 21-0. Wasted opportunites. Their lack of preparedness for that stadium noise AGAIN, was very alarming. Wasted time outs, delay of games, penalties. Same story as last season (actually much worse). I thought they were ready to take the next step, but apparently they're not. Playoff teams don't have games like that, even in Week 1. Very disappointing.

He sucked. And quite honestly, always has. Don't know why people keep "hoping" for these players that have proved multiple times that they just don't have the desire of ability to play at this level. cough Lenhart cough... If Alex Smith wasn't from Utah I promise you that A. We wouldn't even have a thread about him. B. All of you homers would be wanting his head... For the past few years too.

That said, their offensive line doesn't help much either.

This is for you Trout. I had to put up with a lot of ribbing from you for showing my support for Smith as the 49ers QB. Now this year it is finally all coming together very nicely. I believe this is the year Smith will finally serve you up a nice plate of crow. I'll be posting in this thread after each game with my evaluation of his performance this season.

Smith was named the starter at the start of training camp. There has been no QB competition this year. For the first time in his career he finally has the same OC for a 2nd consecutive season. He is healthy, and on top of his game. He was also named a 49ers captain for the first time in his now 6 year NFL career. I am excited to see what Smith can do for the 49ers this season. I can't wait for Sunday.

I may as well post my prediction for the season as well. I am going with 11-5, NFC West Championship, and at least one playoff win. It's going to be a great season for 49ers fans.

God why didn't the Niners take a chance on signing Vick when he came back to the NFL??!! Seriously, it's not like they had a proven starting QB on the roster. Not only that, but they also didn't try to make a move for McNabb. It sure does suck being a Niners fan sometimes.

Classic.

I'll be the first to admit that I cut him some (read: lots of) slack because he was a Ute. But this season is different - environment wise - for him. If he doesn't perform, there are no excuses to go to. I'm going to give him a few more games before I completely write him off. That's my prerogative, just as it is anyone else's to have written him off already. But the fact of the matter is, nobody's opinion really counts except Singletary and the FO in SF. Alex is done when they say he's done. I think he goes another couple of games like the Seattle debacle, they'll pull the plug.

I tried to find an article I read recently about quarterbacks who toiled in futility for the first 5 or 6 years of their careers, then broke out in a big way. Most of the examples they cited were from the late 70's and early 80's (if anyone knows what I'm talking about, and can provide a link, that would be swell...) I'm not saying that Alex is necessarily in that boat, but I'm hoping. Perhaps it is just homerish optimism.

Yes, and I already posted my displeasure with Smith in this thread. Not so surprised that you'd overlook that though.

With how displeased I am with Smith after yesterday, the fact remains that he is the best option currently on the roster. That is why I made the other post in the Vick thread. What have the 49ers done to try to find another QB within the last couple of years? They drafted Nate Davis. Davis has a learning disorder, and is now on the freaking practice squad. They signed David Carr, and Troy Smith. Way to try to find other viable options in case Smith fails.

I give you props for posting after the game. Many would have disappeared. I've been a 9'er fan for 20 years. What's frustrating to me is SF has a lot of talent. But they have 3 HUGE weaknesses that have gone unadressed for 5 years: QB, CB and Offensive coordinator. Raye is absolutely HORRIBLE. He just sticks with the same thing, OVER and OVER and OVER, even when it's not working. Smith is inconsistent and can't handle any kind of pressure or adversity. And Clements is TURRIBLE.

Singletary is a decent judge of character. SF has had a couple of very good drafts. But he's going to stick by Raye no matter what. So I hope Jed York is smart enough to let the both go after the season and keep Manusky and the rest of the defensive staff. Then bring in ANYONE to repalce Smith. Just sign the best QB in the CFL. Or the best FA backup from another team.

All excellent points. The Niners have a horrible secondary, which Seattle fully exploited yesterday. Clements is so overpaid and overrated. Spencer is the best CB they have.

I can't believe all the problems they had with clock management yesterday. They had those same issues last season. It is totally inexcusable to still be having those issues.
